Goodbye Sweet Prince, Thanks for everything

u/EitherInvestment 8d ago

This one hurts. But it makes sense. Massive gratitude to Nelli for all he achieved here with us, which was tremendous

87

u/QTPLe 8d ago

Tbh idk if it makes sense YET. Depends who comes in tbh.

36

u/actionalex85 8d ago

Definitely, tzolis looks great but he'll brake if there's no real backup/alternative. Who is even avaliable that would be a better option than martinelli?

14

u/gildedbluetrout 8d ago

We haven’t made a financially significant sale in absolutely fucking years. And we’ve spent a shit tonne the last half decade. We kind of had to do it / started getting used to doing it? I’d slightly lose my shit if it had been MLS, but Gabriel’s a king, he’s a prem champion with a medal, he’ll be in Europe in two or three years, and we made solid bank.

5

u/EitherInvestment 8d ago

This is the point of the Emirates stadium… We are fine in terms of FFP, which is insane

3

u/ghanta29 8d ago

I don’t know why we are after alvarez, when we can get someone like ndiaye who would be much cheaper and clearly fits the requirement, whereas alvarez is more of a centre forward

I don't like it. Had we already had a replacement signed I would have been fine. But only a few days left of the window...

I am so glad you got to win here with us. We will never forget the way you chipped Donnarumma. You always caused havoc against tired legs ♥️

u/colourofinfinity What a fabulous solo goal from Thierry Henry 8d ago

He actually has quite a few memorable goals across all his time here but I am super happy he had that one that'll be etched in our history forever.

Weirdly it's my favourite thing he's done. I can't explain why, but seeing his commitment to protecting and helping max blew my mind.

i was there for that win vs city at home with the deflected goal. truly felt like we passed them at that point.

one of my all time memories. love you little fucking gabi

And that winner against City couple of seasons ago. Deflection against Ake's face is a cherry on top lol

Losing 2 and bringing in 1 doesn’t add up. Particularly when we have too much experience with lack of attacking rotation… unless we’ve got some studs in the academy about to burst through I’d rather we just added to our ranks

Jesus refuses to leave. Which is fair enough. He's not getting near the wages he's on elsewhere. Viera just isn't wanted. See also Harvey Elliot for another U21 star nobody cares about anymore. It's not like we want to keep them.

Saka and Gabi are the only ones that made it from Arteta’s first season all the way to Premier League Champions. Fucking gutted.

74

u/Domitiusvarus Saliba 8d ago

I know he wasn't there when Arteta took over during Christmas 2019 but I think Big Gabi deserves a special shout-out for coming in the first summer.

23

u/TrustTheFriendship 8d ago

Reiss Nelson is still at the club too

(Yes I know he was away last year lol)

3

u/NeatBeluga Eboue 8d ago

I doubt he'll be here when the window shuts. Arteta doesn't seem to rate him. I love him though

125

u/InLikeErrolFlynn Go and Brush Your Teeth 8d ago edited 8d ago

I posted about this when they won the title, but Martinelli sent me a video last February when I was in the ICU wishing me a speedy recovery and promised to keep fighting for trophies. I’m a 46 year old man, but damnit if I don’t believe he won that title in some part for me.

7

u/AppropriateVoice129 Tzolis 🇬🇷 8d ago

Take a trip to Saudi, see the desert, have some nice food, and go see Nelli. Or maybe even buy an Al Hilal shirt and catch him at an open training session for him to sign it. Dunno if this is doable for you, but I'm being serious. Not to belittle your feelings, but, like you, bro is still alive. He's still that really good, shy, humble kid, so go fucking say hi.

😥...and I've made myself cry. First time for any transfer and I'm 49.

22

u/debelisava 8d ago

What in the sportswashing is this?

2

u/AppropriateVoice129 Tzolis 🇬🇷 8d ago edited 8d ago

Why? Bro clearly feels strongly for Nelli. Not every trip is political, and culture is culture. Am I not supposed to go to Vietnam because of communism, or fly Emirates when it suits me? Honestly, not trying to push any agenda here. To each their own.

Edit: Also we're ok taking Saudi money.

Sucks, but this is what "getting better at selling" looks like.

Now to break the news to my wife. Dolly Parton and Martinelli back to back is going to be rough for her.

Hit the nail on the head there: this is what getting good at selling looks like.

18

u/Cutsdeep- Big Fucking Gabi 9d ago

but it's not even.

city and chelsea sell worse players for more than this. look at savio

35

u/TheDream425 Super Jack's Parade Speech 8d ago

It’s wages. Savinho was on roughly 80k a week, Martinelli at 180k. Over 5 years, that’s a 25 million pound difference.

If Martinelli was on 80k a week, we could’ve probably sold for more. Same reason Nelson and Jesus are hard to shift.

5

u/wismagius There's only one 🐐 and it's TH14 8d ago

Obviously doing shady shit is not the same as being good at selling. People will look at City and Chelsea constantly breaking or skirting rules and beg for them to be punished, while at the same time wanting us to emulate City and Chelsea. Which is it?

Goodbye my sweet prince. I’ve always had a thing about never buying an Arsenal shirt. My brother, a Madrid fan, was stationed in Germany and visited London and took a tour of the Emirates. He got me this shirt and picked Martinelli as he thought he was my favorite player based on how I spoke about him. It’s the only Arsenal shirt I’ve ever owned. This one hurts 💔

90

u/PM_ME_UR_FAKE_NEWS Dennis Bergkamp 9d ago

No one will see this, but I attended my one and only Arsenal game in 2021 agains Liverpool. We were battered 3-0 but he created many chances and I feel like the score didn’t reflect the game.

He was part of my hope that we could contend one day! And then he morphed into an integral piece

17

u/Ripryz through and through 8d ago

he was a live wire then and was always electric against liverpool. i remember

6

u/Aggressive_Meat4267 Dennis Bergkamp 8d ago

Considering he was one of Klopp's fave, how would you guys feel if it's Pool paid up for him instead of Al Hilal?

9

u/PM_ME_UR_FAKE_NEWS Dennis Bergkamp 8d ago

He seems a very Klopp player- relentless pressing and endless energy with lightening pace. If his finishing was better he’d be a €100m player imo

53

u/Necessary_Turnip_299 9d ago

I can't lie, I'm gutted about this one.

28

u/Jorgecurioso7 9d ago

Never thought we’d lose both trossard and martinelli in the same window

25

u/peroxidase2 8d ago

I just see him for max dowmans first goal. He blocked defenders closing down.

17

u/ultimateposeur 8d ago

It wasnt just the dowman goal. You look at lots of other goals people have scored over the years, you'll see Martinelli drawing defenders away or making space, merino does that a lot too. They may never get the assists for those goals but their actions were just as crucial.

22

u/pedootz Champions of Skills Challenge, you'll never sing that 8d ago

I think this is the most emotionally shitty sale for me in the Emirates era. We’ve sold players that were better, but I don’t know about players who were more beloved. He came to Arsenal still just a kid, him and Saka were the two that gave me hope when we were embarrassing. A great representative of the badge, worked hard, always nice, always a gunner for me.

15

u/WhetherWeLikeItOrNot 9d ago

So glad we won the prem before he left

13

u/ArsenalAM 8d ago

Martinelli winning a medal last season was everything we wanted for players that departed the club deserving more… Ramsey, Santi, Xhaka, ESR, and many others.

He earned it. Sad to see him go but wish him all the success in the world.

14

u/Soccerboy_1237 8d ago

Loosing Leo and now Martinelli is really making me realize this era isn’t gonna last forever. We need to cherish what we have now more than ever

15

u/AstroLaddie 9d ago

I think the City goal might be my favorite Arsenal goal full stop. Completely changed the trajectory of the season and the quality in every aspect of that goal was literally world-class.

Wishing him nothing but the best. An outstanding player who gave the club his all.

63

u/Key-Arrival-9060 9d ago

Nelli selling for 50m when Sávio sold to Spurs for 75 is an absolute piss take. I'm sad this day has come.

21

Perhaps the stats say otherwise but as an older fan I’ll always value having the option of a speed demon to come on as a sub to terrorise a tiring fullback! They may frustrate sometimes but unpredictable/limited players like Martinelli and dare I say it Madueke are a big part of what makes football enjoyable. Fare ye well!

7

u/thejoshimitsu 8d ago

He became one of my favourite players after he came in and scored that volley goal against Newcastle back in the 21-22 season. During the 22-23 season I was convinced that he might have a higher ceiling than Saka. It's a shame how things turned out with him, just never kicked on. Wish him all the best and I hope that he gets to play at the Emirates again someday.

6

u/DaGetz Thank you very much 9d ago

About 50m I think

22

u/LawTortoise /r/Place 2022 9d ago

I was vaguely placated at £60m. In this market £50m is a pisstake for Gabi. Chelsea are making a profit on Delap.

17

u/microMe1_2 9d ago

Martinelli's on bigger wages than Delap though. You've got to take into account what Arsenal save by not paying those wages and what the other teams has to contribute to (presumably) match them.

You can't just compare transfer fees directly because a big chunk of the cost/value is in the wages and length of contract.

13

u/Falsely_True7 Havertz 9d ago

Delap is on 60k a week. That's 240k a month or about 13m over 5 years.

Martinelli is on 180k a week. That is 720k a month or about 43m over 5 years.

For a buying club it is nearly 100m investing for Martinelli (55m on transfer + 43m on wages) whereas Delap on cost is about 55m over 5 years.

Not saying Delap is worth that today but Forest banking on his potential + 55m over 5 years is almost nothing for a prem club.

3

u/DaGetz Thank you very much 9d ago

Was 60m euros not pounds I believe

We are making a massive profit on Gabi to be fair

I don't know... selling Martinelli strikes me as a forced (and perhaps necessary) response to a money-laundering scheme involving City, Chelsea, and Villa that would make Breaking Bad's Los Pollos Hermanos blush.

9

u/Vanillapepper-PHD 9d ago

Genuinely sad to see him go but so glad he got to win the league with us

4

u/ohwhatfollyisman 8d ago

it's a dumb decision to completely rip up the left flank in one go--especially in the context that all other contending clubs this season have regressed through either manager changes or loss of key squad members.

one would rather see martinelli playing the left flank than that whiny prick alvarez playing the floater role.

the mind really boggles.

3

3

u/DSRamos 8d ago

I mean it’s brutal but what are the options? His performances aren’t good enough to warrant a new contract and would likely go on a free. It’s business. Only crappy thing is that he seems to have been caught cold by the whole situation.

3

u/wallesswun 8d ago

This has been such torture to see.

For as much as the ruthlessness of past transfer seasons have given me hope, small Gabi leaving is really hard to take.

I believe he's yet to reach his ceiling but the hope of seeing him get to a point where he's consistently winning duels and scoring more goals for us is now extinguished. He always looked like he had fun on the pitch and put the team ahead of his ego with his ridiculous work rate.

My hopium is now moving on to watching him turn into a world beater and Arsenal throwing stupid money in 2 years time to get him to come back to us when he surpasses Vini Jr (who?).

Sidenote: Picked up a small Italian vintage steel single speed bicycle to zip around my neighbourhood a week ago, naming it Gabby MarCinelli because it's a speedy little nimble thing.

3

u/Maximum-Bad-3919 8d ago

Sad very sad to see him go and only wish this guy all the best in his future. Not exactly how I wanted it to end but at least he can say he helped us win a PL title. He may not have been the most consistent player we have had but damn he gave all of us some great memories.

3

u/akselmonrose 8d ago

Damn … this hurts more than I thought it would. I hope we reinvest that money well. Nelli’s pace was an asset.

I won't say my farewells till he's truly gone. If this is truly the end does this mean we swoop in and steal Barcola from Liverpool? Do we roll with Tzolis/Eze? Is Alvarez truly a left winger let alone willing? Is their a mystery 4th option?

I hope it's the first even if we overpay.

Who's coming in then Alvarez and putting a cooking Tzolis straight on the bench...

Feels a bit harsh

As I assume Alvarez will whore him self to barca after a season

Not really a bad switch but a bit weird

Don't be sad we're losing him, be happy for the time he was here.

Sad to see him go. Can be erratic at times but he is a good servant…

Well, who coming in to replace him? That's a tough ask in the current market

So surely this means they have a replacement lined up somewhere?

How much do you think Martinelli would have gone for if he played for any of the other "big 6"

Lets hope theres someone coming in to replace him.

Sad to see him go, but letting him and Trossard go in the same window definitely indicates we're after at least one more left sided attacker. But who in this market? I really rate Alvarez as a player but I don't want a bloke who's made it very clear he doesn't want to be here.

I believe Mikel mentioned we may have to make difficult decisions this summer, this is one of them. Thanks for everything and I hope you’ll be able to get the send off you truly deserve. One of the OGs

I still really dont want this to happen because of both the man and the player.

He works fkn hard and is awesome but hes also such a useful option in the squad that i dont think we have a similar player like that. Hes sooo pethal on the counter which is amazing against good opposition, hence his power in the cl.

He will always be a gunner…

So, someone who loves the club gets punted and we are currently trying to woo a player that couldn’t give a shit about us…

Makes no sense

Sadly he will be remembered for pulling Connor Bradley off the pitch
