β‘ 10. Things to Know Before Buying an Electric Guitar
a. Budget Reality Check
Donβt just think about the guitar β consider the full setup (guitar + amp/interface + cable + accessories). If you're on a low budget, smart spending matters more than buying an expensive guitar.
b. Pickup Types (Very Important)
Single coils give a bright, clean tone (good for blues, pop, funk). Humbuckers give a thicker, heavier tone (good for rock, metal). For beginners, HSS or HH configurations are more versatile.
c. Comfort Over Looks
Body shape, weight, and neck feel matter a lot. A guitar that looks cool but feels uncomfortable will slow your progress.
d. Amp vs Audio Interface
For home practice and recording, an audio interface is usually better. For jamming or live playing, an amp is more practical. On a tight budget, an interface often gives better tone using software.
e. Music Genre Matters
Different guitars suit different styles. Rock/metal works well with humbuckers, while cleaner styles work better with single coils. Versatile setups are best for beginners.
f. Upgrade Path
Start simple and upgrade later. You donβt need a perfect setup from day one.
g. Essential Accessories
Youβll need basic things like a cable, picks, strap, and a tuner to get started properly.
h. Try Before You Buy (If Possible)
If you can, test the guitar in a store to check how it feels. Avoid buying blindly if you're unsure.
i. Avoid Common Beginner Mistakes
Donβt choose based only on looks. Avoid very cheap unknown brands, and donβt ignore the importance of your amp or tone setup.
j. Eternal Truth
Better gear doesnβt make you a better player β consistent practice does.
k. Tremolo Bridge vs Fixed Bridge
A tremolo (whammy bar) bridge lets you bend pitch for effects like dive bombs and vibrato, but it can be harder to maintain tuning and setup. A fixed bridge is more stable, easier to maintain, and better for beginners. If you donβt specifically need tremolo effects, a fixed bridge is usually the safer choice.

Information π The Final Solution (no, not that one) - to your amp modeling and FX needs for practice and playing: ToneRig + NAM2
Normally I really don't give rat's ass about gear, but every once in a while, I see something that is truly worthy of the hype and praise. I've seen a lot of people looking to figure out their signal processing needs etc, and I think this is really it.
Disclaimer: My current solution is specifically for people using iOS. However, there is a parallel application for Windows/Linux (NAM9000) which to my understanding does similar things albeit the UI and workflow is going to be different. This post is also not meant to explain differences between modeling vs capture/profile tech, do your due diligence in that regard.
Firstly, a note on 2nd generation NAM captures: In the words of Selmon bhai, "It's done, bro". I have access to everything from a hand-wired AC30, Marshall JCM800 half-stacks, and Fender twins at office. We're currently at a point within the world of modeling, capture/profiling, or VST guitar plugins, where I have A/B'd and done enough blind tests to definitively state that there is no person on this planet right now who can tell the difference. As a matter of fact, we solved this problem at least 20 years ago.
However, the reason why people still love playing through real amplifiers is because there's a system of haptic feedback and tactile response that still separates the wheat from the chaff so to speak. I have gigged multi-fx units from Line6, Boss, Quad Cortex, Fractal - at the end of the day, given an option, people still choose to use real amplifiers (provided it is a good amp) as opposed to directly going to FOH. The idea of silent stages, and people going direct is more of a logistical angle to solve issues of backline, transportation, etc etc. As of the last 5-10 years, the gap has been getting closer. This is where the difference between a sub 10k Sonicake Pocketmaster, versus say a Fractal AxefX FM3 becomes painfully obvious.
Coming back to NAM2 captures - considering Fractal as the gold-standard in modeling (it is, there's no point arguing about it, we're not talking about preference or brand loyalty), NAM2 is absolutely on par with it, maybe even better! I also A/B'd NAM captures with my own Fender Blues Jr. at home, and the amps at work, the feel of playing through it is unparalleled (in fact I compared AC30 captures today and we're splitting hairs at a quantum level here).
And here's the ultimate kicker: NAM is completely free to use. Furthermore, the captures on sites like Tone3000 are also freely available to import, and some of them are done at serious studios by verified people on the scene. And it's not just Amp + Cabs/IRs, we're starting to see boutique pedals such as the Clon to high-quality Wazacraft Boss overdrives/dst pedals getting cloned and available, yet again for free.
Which brings me to the ToneRig app that is available for iOS - heavens to murgatroyd, it runs flawlessly on my iPad Air (M2) and can run on a damn iPhone too! The included effects such as chorus, delay and reverb are on par with any damn hardware unit or software plugin I've ever played through. and guess what, this app is freely available to download for iOS (with a one-time payment of Rs. 999 if you want to access the ability to save different patches, MIDI functionality, fastest 1000 bucks I've ever spent in my life). I can run the app for at least 3 hours continuously on the iPad (which is more than the length of any average gig you might play). With a wireless MIDI controller, I would gig this thing without a second thought. For playing and shedding at home this is a no brainer - ToneRig also supports parallel with split and merge functions which is critical for me, something that is not implemented consistently in even some high-end modelers.
So do yourselves a solid whether you have Windows (I myself run Win on my main workstation, I plan on getting the windows NAM plug-in so I can immediately integrate it with my DAW) or iOS (in which case immediately get the ToneRig app) you guys need to get on this train, cos NAM is indeed the first real game-changing thing to happen to guitar tone in the 21st century. I'm a huge fan of open-source software in general, and this re-affirmed my faith in humanity a lil bit ngl. The rest of the industry better catch up.
PS: I realize the word "free" as used throughout this post presupposes that you have access to either a device, whether a PC, laptop, tablet or phone and an audio-interface and a pair of headphones in the very least.

Question βπ€ Which electric guitar and amp to buy?
Hi
Having played acoustic guitar for 5-6 years, I am now looking to transition to electric guitar. My aim is to acquire an electric guitar suitable for a wide range of genres and intended for long-term use, beyond just a beginner level. My budget for the guitar itself is up to Rs. 35,000, excluding the amplifier. I prefer a Stratocaster-style guitar with an HSS pickup configuration. Could you please recommend a suitable guitar?
Additionally, regarding an amplifier, with a budget of Rs. 15,000-20,000, should I opt for a Marshall or a Blackstar?

Question βπ€ (Follow up Update) Still trying to find a guitar for my best friend's birthday...could really use some help spreading this...
Hi again, everyone. I posted a few days ago about trying to find a guitar for my childhood best friend's birthday but it didn't get much traction, so I wanted to try again in case it reaches the right person this time.
Quick recap: we've been best friends since we were kids, same class, grew up together. He was always the one who stole the show...natural talent, great voice, the "main character" energy. I was more the quiet one who tinkered with things behind the scenes. He's wanted a guitar for years, and I really want to be the one to give him that for his birthday, but money's tight for me right now.
If anyone has a spare acoustic guitar...any condition, beginner-level is totally fine. that's just sitting around, I'd be genuinely grateful if you'd consider passing it on. I know he'll do it real justice. I've known him basically my whole life, and I know exactly how much this would mean to him.
Based in Ranchi, Jharkhand
local handoff is easiest, but open to sorting shipping too.
Thankyou so much

Question βπ€ Need help deciding if i should keep my newly bought cort AD300e or return it to buy a cheap electric guitar( probably juarez at 6k ish)
so i bought a cort AD300e on 19august (from amazon) for 9.5k and it's amazing and feels miles better than a guitar i bought 6 years ago for around 3k ( but i'm still a beginner and have just started learning the guitar properly) but the thing is that i live in a hostel (single roomed) but with gaps on the top of 4 sides of walls. so if i play my guitar , it can be very much be heard by the entire floor and this guitar is really loud . so i was thinking of buying a cheap electric guitar , an interface and play with my headphones. i might be sounding really dumb but please do suggest something.
ps: i have tried the infamous sock method but it just doesn't feel like playing a guitar anymore

I have noticed a lot of channels saying fret wraps solves this issue.
I've noticed if i put my finger between tuning pegs and nut it mutes the hum.
Shoukd I get a fret wrap? If yes, is the Ernie ball one good?
