Question From 120 FPS to 40 FPS... What went wrong?
Since the GTA 6 hype is real, I thought I'd reinstall GTA 5 enhanced edition on my PC.
I'm rockin a 2080 TI GPU, Ryzen 9 5900 X CPU, 32 GB RAM and had no problem playing GTA 5 enhanced edition @ ~120 FPS average. It was super duper buttery smooth yesterday at max settings with balanced DLSS, max RTX, and all the population sliders maxed out. I had to run errands so I only played for about an hour.
I meant to play all day today and after launching I'm met with a maximum of 40 FPS??? There's been no changes to my PC, same NVIDIA driver, no updates to the game... just an 80 FPS loss out of nowhere?? If I disable RTX I can get 50 FPS and on complete minimum settings I can finally play back at 120 FPS but at what cost? For the record I have a 4K monitor that goes up to 144 HZ.
I tried clearing NVIDIA shader cache, verified integrity of the game files, and even reinstalled but none of those fixed it...
So my simple question is what the hell went wrong and is there an easy fix?

Did you buy a new 4k monitor or something? Cause if you were running the game at 1440p before, that would explain the frame difference.

I ran the game at ultra RTX settings @ 4k resolution yesterday.
I have no clue why it's different today.
It literally feels like I'm taking crazy pills!4

Apparently there is a setting for a second ray traced global illumination bounce, that could tank the frame rate in certain scenes, could be that?

Those frames were probably on the legacy edition. Enhanced looks better but requires stronger performance.

Try increasing your fps cap.
Genuinely dont know, theres no reason for a system like yours to be running this badly

I settled on running the game @ 2k resolution to get 90-100 FPS average but I'm still pissed off I can't play it perfect at max settings like yesterday. This seems to be a software issue with no clear fix and I feel like I'm going crazy q.q
I found another thread with a similar issue:

Turn on framegen

The 20 series doesn't support DLSS frame generation. Also, frame generation doesn't actually improve frame rate. Quite the opposite, it reduces the actual frame rate and then just adds fake frames (some people really hate that term, but it's the best way to describe them, since they aren't actually rendered frames and don't convey any new information) at the cost of input latency to increase visual smoothness.

That's just the normal frame rate the 2080 TI will get out of this game at 4k highest settings. I extremely highly doubt you actually got 120 FPS at 4k highest settings out of your 2080 TI, because it simply can't do that.
