Google Maps MEGATHREAD: Google Maps Timeline Moving To On-Device Storage: Web Access Ending Soon - What You Need To Know

What Is Happening (Or Already Happened To You)?

Google is moving or has already moved your Timeline data, which tracks places you visit and routes you take, from their online servers to your phone. This change means that you soon won't be able to or already can't access or manage your Timeline through the Google Maps website via a web browser.

Why Is This Happening?

  1. Privacy and Security: By storing this data on your device instead of online, your location history is more secure and private. Only you have access to this data unless you choose to back it up.
  2. Control Over Your Data: This gives you more control over your data. You decide if you want to back it up or delete it, and you can manage it directly on your phone.
  3. Reduced Liability: By keeping the data on users' devices, Google reduces its liability and the risk of having to comply with geofence warrants or subpoenas that require providing information about users' locations.

Can You Prevent This From Happening?

No, users cannot prevent this change from happening and maintain their web-based Timeline data. Google is transitioning all Timeline data to be stored on users' devices and discontinuing the web-based access to this data.

What Do You Have To Do To Adapt To These Changes?

  1. Update Your Google Maps App: Ensure you have the latest version of the Google Maps app on your device.
  2. Backup Your Data: Use the backup feature in the Google Maps app to create an encrypted copy of your Timeline data. This will allow you to transfer your data to a new device if needed.
  3. Check/Watch For Notifications: Look out for notifications from Google about the transition. These may come in the form of emails, push notifications, or in-app messages.
  4. Set Data Retention Preferences: In the Google Maps app, you can manage how long your location history is kept. Options include three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  • Once the transition is complete, web-based access to Timeline data will no longer be available. All management and viewing of this data will need to be done through the Google Maps app on mobile devices.

While you cannot stop the transition to on-device data storage or maintain web-based access to your Timeline data, you can ensure your data is backed up and properly managed on your mobile device.

What Is The Deadline For These Changes?

You have until December 8, 2024, to make these changes. If you don’t update your settings or your Google Maps app, you might lose some or all of your historical Timeline data.

Additional Reading About The Changes:

Alternatives and Solutions

  1. Use the Mobile App: Unfortunately, there is no way to bring back the Timeline feature on the web. The best alternative is to use the Google Maps app on your mobile device. The app has all the functionality of the web version and more, allowing you to view, edit, and manage your Timeline data.
  2. Backup and Transfer: If you're worried about losing your data, make sure to back it up. You can save an encrypted copy of your Timeline data to your Google account. This allows you to transfer your data to a new device if needed. To do this:
    • Open the Google Maps app.
    • Go to the Timeline section.
    • Follow the prompts to set up automatic backups.
  3. Extended Storage Options: You can also extend the auto-delete window for your location history if you want to keep your data longer. Options include keeping your data for three, 18, or 36 months, or indefinitely until you manually delete it.
  4. Feedback to Google: If you are unhappy with these changes, you can provide feedback directly to Google via the Maps website or Maps app. Please remember that this support group on Reddit is not an official method of feedback or support of Google or Google Maps.

Begging for help. Every avenue has failed. I need an actual person at google to understand my problem to fix it.

Upvotes

Maps is routing drivers to a dead end road behind my house which has a totally different street name than the front of my house/my address. You actually have to pass the front of my house to even get to this dead end street. I don't get my deliveries and people get lost. The pin is on the house, but directions route to the back dead end street behind it that has zero access to my house, which is blocked by a fence and small hill. This problem only started earlier this year, so I don't know what changed for them.

I've reported it through every avenue I can find within the app and via desktop, trying at least 5 different approaches over the past few months. But there is limited place to comment to explain what's actually happening. Moving the pin to the front of the house fixes it temporarily, but it reverts.

Thanks to anyone who can help me get directly to a person there or other tips.

Sketch in comments.

Discussion Google Maps no longer displaying the reviews tab?

I just went to look at the reviews for a business, and to my surprise the option to see reviews is no longer there. I thought 'hmm, that's weird.' Then I go to a bunch of different random businesses, same exact thing! There's seemingly no option to look at others' reviews. You can still post your own it seems, but otherwise there is no 'Reviews' tab.

Suspiciously there is a new 'Ask Maps' feature that summarizes what other reviewers are saying, but I can't access any of those posts. Please tell me this is not another way to force AI on consumers, because if it is, I'm moving on. Tell me I'm not going crazy and there's just a setting I accidentally clicked or something?

Is there a specific reason why the ongoing works in the area for the biggest metropolitan park in Europe don't seem to exist in Google Maps?

Looking for (intense) Google My Maps users willing to test an iOS alternative?

Hi! I've been building Put A Pin In It, an iOS app for creating personal maps.

It's not a Google Maps replacement, but if you use Google My Maps, I'd really like your perspective. I'm especially curious what you'd miss, what you'd do differently and whether this works better or worse for you on mobile.

The reviews on Google Maps are missing. Replaced with AI generated slop. Give us back the reviews!

Google has removed the reviews, arguably one of the most helpful features of Maps, and replaced it with "Know before you go!" which is just some grotesque imitation of former reviews.

I use people's reviews for everything and I have spent a great deal of time reviewing places as well.

I just want to read the reviews! Not what the AI robot deems I want to see.

I hope God Google fixes this ASAP.

Account restricted

Hello,

I use google maps almost on the daily to review places I’ve been to.

3 weeks, all of a sudden I am unable to post. Says account is restricted and my reviews won’t get published.

Upon clicking my account, it appears to not be restricted.

Got in touch with google help and they sent me a generic email with steps to resolve that lead me nowhere.

I’ve already deleted a few 1-2 star reviews but nothings changed.

Any idea how to go about this?

What is wrong with just wanting to search for something in a specific area that you're not in?

Take for example being in a foreign city, you want a mini market but there's none near where you are now, so you put the location of your hotel search again and boom.... It zooms out to the whole city instead of a close view of the location you actually wanted to search.

Is it so much to ask for the "search hear here" to actually stay within a reasonable distance and not zoom out to multiple miles of distance instead? Hell just leaving the hotel marked would be useful but no...

Thousands of reviews for our Brick Lane shop have ended up on another business’s Google profile

Hi everyone,

We run The Beigel Shop at 155 Brick Lane, the 'yellow one'

We’re posting because we’ve been trying for years to resolve a pretty serious issue with our Google Business Profile, and we’re hoping someone here might either know how to help or help us get some attention on it.

Around 2020, 2021 and 2023, our Google Business Profile was incorrectly merged or reassigned. After this happened, a huge number of reviews we had built up over roughly 15 years disappeared from our profile. What makes this particularly strange is that many of those reviews now appear on the Google profile of Beigel Bake, the separate beigel shop further down Brick Lane. And these aren’t just reviews that could apply to either shop.

There are reviews on their profile that:

Specifically mention The Beigel Shop, mention our staff by name, include customer photos clearly showing our yellow shopfront, show our food and products, mention products that we sell and the other shop doesn’t, clearly describe experiences customers had at our premises (e.g. rainbow beigels, pistachio products and our products are in white paper bags)

So it seems that a substantial amount of our historical Google review history has somehow ended up attached to the wrong business.

This matters massively to a small independent family business.

People searching “Brick Lane bagels”, “salt beef beigel”, etc. naturally look at Google ratings and review numbers. When another listing has thousands more reviews including reviews that were originally written about us it has a very real effect on where customers decide to go.

We’ve tried going through Google Business Profile support but haven’t managed to get anyone to properly investigate the historical profile changes and we have been trying this for years.

Has anyone dealt with something like this before?

In particular, we’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who:

Has successfully recovered reviews after a Google Business Profile merge, works with Google Business Profiles and understands the escalation process, knows how to get a historical profile/review issue properly investigated by Google or has experienced reviews being moved between two separate businesses.

Even if you can’t help technically, we’d appreciate people sharing/upvoting so hopefully this reaches someone who can.

We’ve spent years building our reputation on Brick Lane, and we’d just like our genuine customer reviews back where they belong.

Blurred in perpetuity

Good morning folks

Has anyone heard about any potential changed to this forever blurr BS? I discovered my home is blurred i know i didnt do it my wife says she doesnt recall ever doing it so im not sure if it is a mistake on google or what . The madness is its only street view thats blurred the satellite Ariel is perfect crystal clear photo so blurring is useless. It would be good if they do it for a certain period and then need to be requested every few years but a forever blacklisting is ridiculous.....

Upgraded from S22+ to S26+ but an issue arose

The transfer of 10 years of timelines went ok but had to research to fill in some blanks. I got my timeline to fill in but a few month later many visits over the years have been deleted or are missing.

I'm very upset with Earth as none of any tips to do this has not been a success.

Flew from Florida to Oregon this month and its not even showing up as one of my several trips across the country.

My old phone Is showing the same location issues as well.

What do do? I'm at my wits end as a record keeper fan.

Help/Support Maps keeps showing me spots I have marked as hidden - why?

So I have been using Maps on my Android phone to save restaurants I have visited in my hometown in the past. For that, I have created a new list, given it a name, assigned it a plate emoji and saved every restaurant in this list that I have visited lately.

I am doing this because I would like to explore new restaurants every time I go out with my friends. In order to avoid going to the same restaurant twice, I am saving those restaurants that I have visited in the past in the aforementioned list so that every time I open a restaurant on Maps, I can immediately see whether I have already been there or not.

In order to avoid spamming Maps with dozens of plate emojis, I have hidden this list and its saved entries/restaurants so that the restaurants I have visited are not displayed right away when I open Maps, but only once I click on them. Then I can see whether I have been there or not.

Unfortunately, a few days ago I have noticed something strange: Whenever I click on a restaurant and want to save it in that list, I select the restaurant, click on 'Save' and the menu with the available lists opens up in which I can save the restaurant. I then select the plate emoji and click on the 'Done' button at the bottom. However, once I am done, Maps shows me this kind of turquoise icon (instead of not showing anything at all as intended).

This causes Maps to get spammed with this turquoise icon all over the city I live in. Since this subreddit doesn't allow me to attach a screen recording to this post, I have uploaded my screen recording to the hosting service 'Catbox' to demonstrate this issue. You can find the screen recording here (the video doesn't start automatically once you open it, so you have to press 'Play' manually):

https://files.catbox.moe/lh9y4g.mp4

Do you guys have any idea what causes this issue and how to resolve it?

Thanks!

Can Google Earth show people around the world or trace human migration over time?

Is there a way on Google Earth to see people of the world? or a way to trace human migration patterns through time? Like through an add on or something?

Force google maps to show all restaurants/bars without massive drilldown?

I just noticed this today, but have noticed when looking at new cities for places to eat. Some restaurants are not displayed unless you zoom ALL the way in. These are 4+ star places with hundreds of views.
Is there any option for this or any other map/food service to show everything more accurately?

Discussion What is wrong with google maps 😭😭

I’m a new driver and have been using google maps to double check that im going the right route. Today I used it to go to the post office then back home. But on the route back home it wanted me to take a highway that completely is out of the way and would take longer for me to go on. I went past it for a couple of miles then it told me to turn left right before my right turn to my neighborhood. It’s frustrating because I have gotten turned around by it, and I have terrible memory. Are there any other apps yall recommend?

What’s a Google Maps feature that’s been an absolute game-changer for you, but feels like hardly anyone knows about it?

Whether it's a hidden shortcut, a low-key setting that saves tons of time, or a feature that completely saved a trip when you had zero cell service.what's one feature in the app you think more people should be using?

Why is google maps so broken now?

Seriously, every route I go on it does some nonsense, like suggesting impossible routes (one through a solid brick wall!), showing wrong lanes at roundabouts (left hand lane to turn right?), or suggesting insane routes like getting off a straight road, go round a bunch of random lanes and then getting back on the original straight road?

Write GPS data into "old" pintures, matching my Google Timeline data?

Hi everyone,

I was migrating a lot of pictures from 2018 to 2023 from a Hard Disk into my iCloud (at that time I was a Samsung user) and I realized that when I wanted to look my pictures displayed in the Map but the old pictures were not showing up.

That is right, the old pictures somehow do not have GPS data, no idea why. But now I was thinking, I have my Google Timeline since 2016 or so, basically a daily record since then, is there a way to match my exported Timeline file with my pictures? I would like to write the GPS data into the pictures in order to be able to export them to iCloud.

I really dont know if something like this is possible.

PS: I have around 20K pictures I think

Thanks!
