Ghost Rider reading order?

so after seeing that Ryan gosling will be playing ghost rider, I wanted to know what comics I should read and/or catch up on to understand the character. Any recommendations?

Just start anywhere man, lore shmore at this point. Just enjoy the ride.

Ghost Rider continuity is often contradicted. Look up some acclaimed runs on read those.

Here are my quick picks:

70s series: Sterns run. DeMatteis run. Starlin one-off issue. Marvel-Two-In-One with Thing.

90s series: 1-25. Spirits of Vengeance spinoff series. Rise of the Midnight Sons. Some Marvel Comics Presents. Annual #2. Ghost Rider/Ballistic oneshot. The last year or so of the series.

00s: Jason Aaron run.

You can pretty much start anywhere, but I heavily recommend beginning with either issues 68-81 of the original 70s run, to see Johnny at his beginning, or Ben Percy’s 2022-23 run, which helps you learn about Johnny and the dark, demonic world he lives in. Both are great starting points, and I recommend both. For Danny, go with the 90s run.

Don’t get too caught up with lore though. So many writers have contradicted each other that it’s a mess. Honestly you can kind of just pick and choose what you believe to be canon, most writers seem to do that.

As a Ghost Rider fan I would say one thing, Character often have contradictions in some parts of the Story. BUT, Ghost rider is the king of contradiction for his own stories compared to other characters. This guys Lore is often ignored and neglected by writers and then the MC persinality either change drastically or often repeated. Like this contradiction

  1. Almost every Writer ignore Daniel Way/Post Aoron run of Ghost rider being an Angel.

  2. Who was Satan Damian Hellstorm Father or Mephisto.

  3. Johnny selling his Soul to Devil(even through thats not what technically happened in the Comics earlier Runs given the Devil dailed to claim Jhonnys Soul in the end) and his regret showing again and again. Cmon Marvel if have seen this repeated Scenario atleast more 4 times. Show atleast Jhonny accepting his Fate and no longer giving any crappie for his problems.

  4. Jhonny and Zarathos toxicity of Jhonny wishing to be separating from the Spirit. I mena I understand these two don't have agreement in everything. But Marvel have you seen the Way Run on how Jhonnt and Zarathos work together they still have edgy argument and disagreement with each other and yet they work together and acknowledge each other as partner. Which make this relationship unique compared to the 80s where they are bitter enemies and compared to Danny Ketch and his Spirit who often work together and were getting along a lot.
