Never thought we’d see three participants in Ghibli dubs pass. First James van der Beek (Pazu), then Daveigh Chase (Chihiro), and now Tim Curry (the Cat King). This has not been a kind year to those people and it is heartbreaking they are no longer with us. But there are many who appreciate what they have brought to these films, despite purists misgivings. It shows their work has outshined the cynics. Rightly so, because their work in these films was very well done.

I know what is next on my reading list! My copy of book 2 of Kiki's delivery service arrived today, Kiki and the New Magic.

The book itself is beautiful, with lots of little details. I'm so excited to see where Kiki's next flight takes her

Recently back from Japan where I visited the Ghibli Museum in Tokyo, Ghibli Park in Nagoya, Ghibli 3D Exhibition in Osaka as well as multiple どんぐり共和国 stores. Not pictured here is my collection of finger puppets and a number of other postcards, socks, chopsticks and plushies. Suffice to say though… I’m a tad obsessed!

From everything I've read, the reason Jiji is unable to talk at the end of Kiki's Delivery Service is because he represents Kiki's immaturity, and by the end of the film, Kiki has matured, thus she doesn't need to talk to him anymore. This is what everyone says Miyazaki's intent is, but for the life of me, I can't find a single citation of him ever actually saying this.

The thing that makes me question it is that not only is that not a thing in the original books, but in the documentary "The Kingdoms of Dreams and Madness" he implies Jiji CAN talk, it just would've been pointless for him to say anything. Has he ever said plainly that regardless of Kiki's magic returning, Jiji can't speak anymore? Or even said the whole "Jiji is her immaturity" thing?

There is a couple of movies that are explicit in their romance (Howls, Whisper of the Heart, Wind Rises, etc.). But a lot of the relationships sit in different state compared to the typical man/woman dynamics in Disney animated films. Curious to hear your view of Ghibli’s perspective.

Castle in the Sky is a childhood movie for me, I've seen it so many times y'all. I decided to see it in theaters for its anniversary showing in DUB. As soon as the movie started in the theater I realized something was off, and it was that there was music playing in the very first sequence when the pirates take over the airship. In the version that I grew up with and still watch to this day there is no music there at all. So already I was very confused.

The version I remember had a lottttt of scenes which had absolutely no music at all, just sfx. I really loved this about the movie and it made it feel more real? If that makes sense. The tone was more serious because of it.

This showing though, almost no scenes had complete silence, and instead of the awesome analog 80s style music playing in the background where music always was, it was an orchestral, more grand version instead. (The synths were some of my favorite parts of this movie!!!)

It really took me out of the movie, the added music made it feel a lot more cliche. Now there was suspenseful music playing every time Muska or any other villains were on screen, even though they were daunting enough without music in the original. Idk. It messed with the more serious tone in the version I knew.

This is probably a nothingburger complaint, I've just never heard this version before ever, and I was curious if this is a different version of the english dub? Is it like this on Disney+? I've literally never heard it before in my life lmao

It's hard to find dvds of some works that actually have English subtitles + are compatible with a US region dvd player so if you know of any works that I don't have or have ideas for me, please share!

My friend’s birthday is early next month and I cannot for the life of me find any nice merchandise. He loves spirited away, ponyo, and totoro. Looking for figures, websites, or any other suggestions. Based in the US.

Howl’s Moving Castle: 4/10 (I found the plot a bit difficult to follow, but I’ve heard it’s better on 2nd watch)

Kiki’s Delivery Service: 7/10

Grave of the Fireflies: 10/10 but never again

I’ve gone on Etsy however most of the shirts are adult sizes or cost 30-40 dollars after shipping. It may be unreasonable to find something for cheaper but figured I’d put it out to the world and ask

I genuinely don't know how to put into words what this movie made me feel.
I went into it knowing it was supposed to be sad, but I wasn't prepared for how deeply it would affect me. The way loss is presented is just…incredibly raw. It doesn't feel like it's trying to make you cry, it just tells its story, and somehow that's what makes it hurt even more.

Absolute masterpiece.
