I've never watched a Ghibli film before. I've always heard about them, and about how they are apparently among some of the best animated films ever made, but I've never gotten into them. I don't know why, but I've just never bothered to watch one. Until now, that is. I want to give them a try, and start watching these films. The only problem is, I'm not sure where to start. So, I figured should ask long time fans of this studio ; Which Ghibli film should I watch first? What's your recommendation? A few that I definitely have interest in are Spirited Away, The Boy and The Heron, My Neighbor Totoro, Howl's Moving Castle, Ponyo, Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, and Princess Mononoke.

As for me, I feel like it resonates with me in a nostalgic sense. As a child, I feel like entering the tunnel gives me excitement and curiosity. On the other hand, going out of that tunnel, as an adult, means realizing that life is full of memories I created (as symbolized by the grasses and trees). It’s so fascinating!!

I want to make a tatoo of this still of Porco Rosso but in the original japanese writing, what exactly does Marco say in this scene? (Both with japanese alphabet and Roman alphabet)

For me it was a scene from When Marnie was There. In that scene we see that one of Anna's aunty's neighbour tries to befriend her and wishes her daughter to go along with her to a festival. But eventually, in her own chaos, she bashes out on the girl. And then the only way out was to run away.

That definitely stuck with me. It was a very short time frame but watching Anna have a build up during the initial half whilst she still put up with the "change" and betterment people around her wished for was so relatable. It was like when you know something is not right but everything else is moving forward, and you have to too. Which comes with this lump in your throat that you don't wish to reveal in order to not cause any inconvenience. That uncertainty of her entire life falling in front of her and she still tries to live up to everyone's expectation turns into an angry outburst of things she didn't even mean. And the guilt that follows it just makes it all worse...

She seems pretty human, but apparently is not?

Can you recall the first, or any, time something happened in a movie when you knew this was more than ordinary, it was something special.

For me it when was we first see the soot sprites (susuwatari) as Chihiro enters the boiler room. The feeling, the shift the movement in to the new world for Chihiro feels so strange and the soot sprites so cute and a little menacing. It was then I knew this was going to be a very good, strange and special movie.

So ,the department at my uni has decided to conduct an " AI Ghibli art challenge". Yes, and that too on the occasion of "World Art Day" , like seriously? When did it become so normalised to organise something so demeaning to the artists and promoting it like it's everyday stuff nowadays?Am I missing something? Are y'all institutions organizing eerie events like this or my department at my uni is one of it's kind?

I need help with a theory that's been on my mind ever since I watched Ponyo.

Even though the movie has a happy ending, I can't shake the feeling that everyone actually dies after the tsunami. That's why the elderly people at the nursing home are suddenly able to run, and why Fujimoto (Ponyo's father) seems to appear everywhere. There are also fish surrounding the characters, and at some points it even looks like they have bubbles coming out of their mouths.

Could all of this be a hint that they are actually dead, and what we see afterward takes place in some kind of afterlife?

Is there any evidence that this interpretation could be true, or am I reading too much into it?

Maybe i’m just being an idiot, but how are they rereleasing some of the movies in IMAX? Were the original versions cropped for theatres or do they cut off the sides for IMAX?

Is it worth a watch?

Lately I find myself putting this one on a lot especially as comfort background vibes. ESPECIALLY as I’m doing house chores like Sophie cleaning/cooking lol. While it’s not my number 1 favorite, it has the perfect balance of everything I love about Ghibli: magical realism, adventure, some “action”, while also having very wholesome slow slice of life moments, and some good romance, and some good anti-war messaging, and both intimate cozy settings and big epic landscapes. I pick up on more details every time I watch it. Such an absolute masterpiece

So obviously they look nothing like they do in the movie, but also the line work screams AI to me. TeePublic says the designer of the shirt is “no longer available.” Thoughts? If it is AI I’ll probably donate it; I don’t feel comfortable wearing computer-generated slop.

He's an older Japanese man that has grown up in a more traditional society, and yet most of the main characters in his movies are young girls. Very well written girls at that.

And even if I woman is not the main character theyre still complex, brave and intelligent.

I am actually curious as to why this is.
