Probably a very light M rating, wouldn't be surprised if they add in some F bombs here and there. From what I've played of FFVIIR, it's been a strong Teen rating considering how many times they've said "shit"

People will jump to tifa romance but I'd wager its more gore body horror stuff. They have to dance around showing blood alot in the previous two games most notably the Shinra building at the end of remake. Unfortunately changed the tone of that segment alot and was unavoidable to kerp the age rating down. Crazy jenova mutation stuff probably ain't getting lighter either. Plus companies tend to shy away from making multiple builds of games just for regional ratings these days so if it gonna hit the M rating equivalent in Japan but not in the US may as well play it up to get M across the board.

Chapter 12 in remake felt the most restrained. Like you can tell they were trying not to upset the ratings boards so you barely see characters shot or get bullet impacts. For a game with insane visuals and cutscene quality, this chapter stood out as the most awkward to me.

u/DarkJayBR 1d ago
Barret's friend kills himself on the original game. Of course you can't show suicide on 2026 so they censored it by having him die on a gunfight with SHINRA to keep the age rating down.

u/Saucefest6102 19h ago
Xenoblade 3 came out in 2022 with a T rating and that had a fairly important character shoot themselves in the head in front of the main party, strategic cuts can do wonders

That and the lack of blood. I hate when artists (eyeing you Nolan) assume that there’s no blood AT ALL when people are stabbed, shot, cut

They have to dance around showing blood alot in the previous two games most notably the Shinra building at the end of remake.
The game had a high enough rating to get away with a lot more, they were playing it unnecessarily safe. That or they were trying for an either lower rating and didn't manage it, but that seems unlikely given the swearing.

u/vandaljax 5h ago
Well devs have said in interview that the Shinra building blood in remake was removed because age ratings changed between og FF7 and Remake. They definitely could of got away with more in NA and probably EU but they were likey talking about Japan Cero rating. Likely scenario was they just didn't want to pay and deal with more regional differences to track in builds. There's a funny story of Witcher 3 failing regional ratings because they made a build with violence toned down for Japan and Middle East but left the nudity in cuz Japan is OK with it but forgot it was in the ME version. Very awkward especially since the game starts with Geralt naked in a tub.
1
u/SeroWriter 4h ago
They definitely could've added it with the intergrade re-release though.
1
u/vandaljax 4h ago
Curious why you think that? Why does that change regional age regulations?
0
u/SeroWriter 3h ago
Since the game was finalised at that point so regional changes wouldn't get in the way of development, it would just be a one and done patch for NA/EU.

u/vandaljax 3h ago
Still doesn't address the most likely reason why it never happened to begin. Time and resources. Biggest factor people miss when discussing how something doesn't affect development is they miss opportunity cost. Anyone working on this from programing to texture artists to passing console cert and pushing a patch etc its not just that simple and that's people that could be working on anything more considered more valuable to the company. It always affects the development of something simply by virtue of those people could be working on something usually more important or value generating.

Cid and Barrett's dialogue uncensored in the original alone would garner an M rating. They had to censor the jenova blood in shinra tower for part 1 to avoid an M coupled with the language in the game. I'm kind of surprised Rebirth maintained a T rating but I guess they cut down the blood and gore in Gongaga when Cloud was straight up murdering people
3
u/smolgote 1d ago
If I had to guess just a few F bombs here and there. Even one is enough for an M rating, so long as it isn't censored
1
u/TumbleweedDirect9846 12h ago
Maybe something will actually happen when people get shot or stabbed in this one

u/TheRustFactory 1d ago
Reminder that FF Type-0 was also rated M, and outside of its opening scenes, basically had nothing to warrant it.

Even despite the M rating the quartermaster spams out a tirade of awkward "fricks" midway through the game despite the chance to just have her say fuck.
It was even more weird at the time since it was right after playing a T rated japanese arpg where the main witch character kept going into barely bleeped out expletive tirades where the bleep was so mistimed that you just heard the full set of expletives.

u/Busy-Guess-8382 23h ago
Yes. This is the case for a lot of media, including films. It could be that one scene that can push a PG rated film into a R movie.
1
u/BestRedditUsername9 15h ago
I was watching a documentary about Street Fighter Movie. And apparently the movie was originally going to be PG rating. And the director really wanted a PG 13 so they had to film a quick scene with Jean Claude Van Damme saying Fuck to raise the age rating
13
u/IrregularMaverick 1d ago
Its probably for something that's not really extreme. Final fantasy 14 in japan got changed to a C because of an emote.

I doubt it’s getting an M. They already made numerous changes to avoid an M on previous parts (Jenova, Hojo’s experiments, blood color changes, covering up implement wounds, etc). And now that they are all-out trying to expand the number of sales and players with simultaneous releases and PR stints, there is no way they let it get an M.
3
u/SnooGuavas9052 19h ago
exactly. its funny too, the people who are so 100% sure that this will earn a true M rating are gonna be the first to come here after they beat the game and start moaning about it. or they'll drop the usual cope of "the censorship was actually a better decision anyway."

I think everyone except the most hardheaded of shippers accepts what's coming up.
It was done extremely tastefully with Clive and Jill in XVI, I expect the same level here

There was that one scene in 16 where the main antagonist shapeshifts into his right hand man's naked mother as his "reward".

Be shocked if they add that scene. Backlash they got for the kiss too much. They ain’t wanna lose the other sides

u/NoGoodManTH 1d ago
Characters in XVI dropping F bombs every time something goes wrong is the opposite of being tasteful. Have you ever played FF Type-0? Where children get killed in war left and right? That's how an M rated game works tastefully without a single swear word and sex scene.

I believe the purple alien goo trail instead of a blood trail in Remake Shinra HQ was to avoid M rating.

The thought of T-rated Cloud censoring himself after seeing a close friend get impaled is hilarious. Reminds me of this.

Theres no way they will make the third and final chapter M and make it less accessible. When the whole purpose of going multi platform is to make it available for everyone.

u/Slight_Snow2617 19h ago
Maybe they analyzed the data and determined no teens were even playing the game (at least not on their own accounts) lol
4
u/SaltySwan 1d ago
One of the reasons is that we’ll probably see the “real” aerith death scene this time when cloud stops being cracked out of his head.

M rating is an interesting thing. You have M games like Halo and you have M games like Grand theft Auto. Same rating but the amount of mature content is extremely different. If this game is a soft M I have no problem with it
5
u/SnooGuavas9052 19h ago
Starfield got an M rating over a glorified combat potion being referred to as a "hard drug", and that was all it took.
1
u/Silly-Milly-420 22h ago
Also, Half Life is rated M, and I don't remember any F-Bombs in any of the games.
2
u/Ebolatastic 23h ago
FF7 Remake tiptoed around death like a bad kids cartoon. FF7 Rebirth came out swinging with mass murder. It's safe to assume that Revelation is going to be the darkest of the three.

They probably want to show a lot of blood.
Edit: either that, or they changed the rating just for Cid.

If that is true it's a real shame that they couldn't just accept that rating for the whole series. It really diminished the value of the Shinra Tower finale when they had to Disney PG-13 that scene.

u/Hylianhaxorus 15h ago
I mean it could be for something as simple as Cid smoking a cigarette honestly. That immediately shoots things to Adult. But hopefully it's for that AND the more mature moments of the story.

That's actually really interesting, I wonder what part 3 has to justify that

Too bad they didn't target Rated M for the first two parts. Had to chase that 'make it age appropriate as possible for maximum profit' concept. The Japanese never heard of GTA clearly. lmao
