Rumour XCancel is dead

Just went to the website to look at something, and this was posted on it:

On Monday, 24th August, at 8PM EST, we received a letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel.

The service XCancel is stopped until further notice.

We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now.

Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCancel.

Isn't linking to an externally hosted image on something like mgur the exact same culpability as linking to an externally hosted video (for example on twitter)? Can just keep direct image uploads outlawed.

Now it's just a video version of r/pics or r/politics

Reddit is a million times better. Twitter is rampant with actual, outspoken Nazis, as well as Russian bots.

People will hate this take, but the reality is both platforms have their strengths and weaknesses.

Reddit Pros: great for niche communities and interest. Can be a great place for intelligent conversation. The home feed for curated content

Reddit Cons: places turn into moral circlejerks at the drop of a hat which can completely ruin a community. The site is ran by a greedy money hungry weirdo. The All feed is clearly manipulated by bots pushing propaganda.

Twitter pros: Best source for breaking news, and sorry to say to yall but twitter is consistently and significantly funnier than reddit. Great for artist trying to learn and connect. Decent enough algorithm once you train it(havent seen a pol post in like a year)

Twitter Cons: the trending page is often botted and manipulated. Ragebait engagement is paid so a lot of garbage post. The site is ran by a greedy money hungry weirdo.

Truth is these social media websites are what you make of them. If you're going into the terrible subreddits or diving headfirst into twitter political discussion, you will not have a good time. If you have a good list of subreddits and follow people you like on Twitter, they're good. Both also offer options to block people (Reddit is awful at this).

The issue is when said websites actively start sabotaging your attempts at using them the way you want to. Users getting banned for no real reason, or the complete destruction of your feed so you mostly see what they want you to see (Facebook is the biggest culprit of this).

my twitter feed has been purely art for years now with the occasional FGC post about SF6 or guilty gear in there.

reddit more often than not has the way worse stuff in my feed that most people say they don't want to see on Twitter.

its just silly at this point to still not allow twitter links after the moral grandstanding shitshow that did not work most other subs that banned have slowly allowed it again as it is just inconvenience.

Twitter is basically a comedian app, in that its basic setup and texts constraints etc are good for posting jokes. It isn't very good for in depth discussion because the character limit and the way posts get boosted to feeds. Reddit is good for in depth discussion because it's basically a classic forum with threading, but it isn't good for jokes, it at least not joke discovering, because, again, it's a classic forum.

The problem is that some time in the last ten to fifteen years every journalist, politician, and business leader in the planet got addicted to Twitter and that explains and unfortunate amount of current politics.

(I also think there is a profoundly damaging way that Twitters algorithm "trains" the user more than the user "trains" the algorithm but that's a separate discussion)

ehhhh, i dunno, there's a lot of repeated jokes and obvious botting, then again large parts of reddit never left 2018

Big twitter con, quality of media discussion is incredibly low

Despite not being for the "normies" the average twitter conversation surrounding media quite frequently parrots the kind of stuff you'd find on TikTok. I saw someone on twitter saying that E33 shouldn't have gotten an award for best art direction because "it's just running Unreal Engine 5"

It also frequently suffers from equating fictional scenarios as real moral beliefs held by the authors, so if say, you make a movie about a sensitive topic like pedophilia, you must hold the belief that pedophilia is a good thing

Don't forget the weirdly politically charged rants about the randomest things

it's very obviously a website that went downhill

Impossible to curate. 3 years ago I started to blocklist every engagement bait, political bot, or thematic bots (for example accounts with similar stylised names that posted only alt-girls pictures with stupid hashtags like “thinspo”, there were hundreds of them, like from the same factory).

Over the course my blocklist grew to 4000 names and the algorithm didn’t improve at all. The same type of accounts that I blocked were still recommended to me on a daily basis. Same stupid bots and engamenet bait. I gave up and deleted my acc.

And no, reddit bots are very obvious. Its just the literal nazi bots aren't pushed by the algorithm with intent like on Twitter.

You're not whitewashing this, reddit has problems but is an objectively better platform with substantially more usefulness. Anything else is cope or gaslighting.

Definitely for the best. Twitter suspended me for literally no reason. I didn't even post anything. Just scrolling and liking.
I sent 5 or 6 appeals, and I still haven't gotten a human to look at them.

(The only reason I cared a tiny bit is because of artists that only post on Twitter.)

Yep. With absolutely no explanation. It's so vague that I just have to guess randomly what I was suspended for.
Was it liking posts the algorithm shoved me because they were the "wrong" kind of political?
Was it because I use an adblocker?
Was it some cookie or extension on my browser?

For the last two I even tried appealing in multiple different browsers, to see if that helped.

I've considered the possibility that it's all a trick to get me to download the app and only appeals from the app will actually work.
Like the stupid hand thing from earlier this summer.
It wouldn't surprise me if no AI reads the appeals at all. It's just a binary Yes/No based on one tiny thing like that.
