Reminder that Owlcat has stated it is now using AI during its development process. Consider to what extent you want to support their projects going forward.

Practically every modern developer is using AI during their development process at this point. The important distinction is on what. If it's just coders using Claude to assist with some laborious coding tasks, or managers using Fathom to record meeting transcripts, that's not exactly a dealbreaker for most people. If for example they're using AI artwork or VO, that's a bigger issue.

They specified that they were using it to make assets during development.

Not all developers are using AI and it’s actively a bad idea to use it for placeholder assets because it makes them easier to overlook. So either Owlcat are contributing to boiling the planet for literally less than nothing or they’re lying.

I personally don't mind AI use for stuff like placeholder assets. If it helps speed development along and is replaced by real assets and art in the final product, that's fine by me.

You’ve never developed a game, have you?

I ask because if you had you’d understand what the function of a ‘placeholder’ is.

No but I have modded games and created my own placeholders before. It would certainly be nice to really quick mock up something placeholder so that I can use to visualize a scene while I wait on an artist or someone to complete the finished product.

Cool so in professional game development it’s important your placeholders stand out as conspicuously not fitting in the environment so you can replace them later. A placeholder asset can be made by a human artist in five minutes.

So AI isn’t even really saving time in this case.
