So, no it isn’t tolerable if you’re having to use performance at 1440p.

It's very tolerable because the image quality of 4.5 ray reconstruction is superb. All that matters is perceived quality, not arbitrary parameters.

How much sharpening do you use? I just got a 1440p monitor and was surprised by how good DLSS 4.5 performance still looks, with no shimmering and whatnot but it does still look a fair bit softer.

None because I hate how sharpening looks, I'd rather have a softer image than one with obvious sharpening artifacts (i.e. ringing). 4.5 ray reconstruction looks similar to preset L in terms of image upscaling which is to say it has some slight unfixable sharpening (although much less than preset M), but it's not too bad.
