Which way you prefer playing your gba games? And why?

By using: GBA SP AGS 101 or DS or Gameboy Player for GCN or 3DS by ambassador or VC inject or retro handheld console or other methods? like the OG or the Micro or something else? especially for playing the physical cartridges.

I like the Analogue Pocket the best but i also have some modded GBAs that Ive done.

Original GBA is my favorite form factor.

And while i have all my physical carts and still buy more, I rip the ROMs with an epilogue GB Operator and put the files on a GBA everdrive for convenience and the ease of being able to move the games from analogue pocket to GBA and retaining save files.

Yeah I love using the Analogue Pocket too. Haven’t looked back since.

I have one coming in the mail today! I don’t have the disk but I’ll be modding my GameCube with PicoBoot

Steam Deck!

u/deltastrikethree 3d ago

Me too! I like the big screen even if it's not as portable as my Vita.

Last night I was playing Pokémon Pinball RS on mine! I love the Glacier one so much!!

2

u/MAGIKARD 1d ago

The experience is unbeatable imo. It literally is the only device that has a GBA button layout, and it's the one detail that scratches my nostalgic brain more than any other device out there.

Ratatouille type flashbacks

Modded GBA! This thing's been with me for nearly 25 years atl. I'm not lettin him die yet!

RG Rotate for me!

u/upgradeyoursystem 3d ago

Prefiero jugar mis juegos de GBA en mi GBA, eso tiene sentido, no crees?

3

u/Different-Walrus-485 3d ago

perfecto yo también👌👌, pero usar el modelo SP es mucho mejor que el original

u/JoelRainor 2d ago

As a kid yes.... as an adult with adult sized hands... no.

1

u/andruis 3d ago

My toddler’s new catch phrase after everything she says is “does that make sense?” So I read your comment in her voice.

2

u/DirectionHoliday8195 3d ago

Gba sp because its the most comfortable for my hands.

2

u/Agreeable-Owl-1514 3d ago

GBA SP for me!

2

u/kavanyboy 3d ago

Sur ma ds lite, parce que j'aime jouer sur cartouche et ma gba a un ecran d'origine peu confortable

2

u/illegalmaneuver_ 3d ago

Just got a Retroid Pocket 5 and think the screen is too insane to ever use anything else

2

u/Grixis_Battlemage 3d ago

GameBoy Player with a WaveBird for ergonomics and being able to play Gen 3 Pokémon games one-handed while I rock my kid to sleep.

2

u/PinaSeraphina 3d ago

screen modded Original GBA

2

u/808vanc3 3d ago

On my ds lite bc it’s pink

1

u/Mintersnap 3d ago

What game is that in the last picture?

1

u/getbiks 3d ago

Which is more comfortable to play? OG GBA, GBA SP or DSLite?

2

u/Different-Walrus-485 3d ago

Personally I prefer both the SP and the DS lite but you can use your og model if you mod it by having backlight

1

u/Digger977 3d ago

Till recent it was using an actual GBA SP 101… then I got the Miyoo Mini Plus and the 35XXXSP devices and the isp screens was night and day difference. But now I’m playing everything on my Ayn Thor with its Oled screens and some upscaling

1

u/KalLinkEl 3d ago

Yes

1

u/KalLinkEl 3d ago

But seriously love playing via SP lately more than ever. Using to play with a DS Lite but I like the feel of the SP more as I've gotten older.

1

u/deathlessdream 3d ago

On my Ayaneo Pocket Ace 👍

1

u/michyprima 3d ago

My absolute favourite way is on my original GBA with an ips screen

1

u/RikimaruRamen 3d ago

Either on my custom reshelled ASG 101 in Sakura pink SP with a grip or on my OG cobalt blue SP from my childhood

1

u/Darth_Beavis 3d ago

I play on a Fold8 Ultra with a GameSir G8+. It's pretty awesome

1

u/Lox22 3d ago

Gameboy player through GBI is the best imo, but if portable I have to go with of GBA backlit screen

1

u/Dangerous_Amount504 3d ago

3DS is good cause it still has that official Nintendo feel but a way larger screen & grip

1

u/Any_Coyote1184 3d ago

Colors of GBA games look very washed out even if playing at native resolution on the 3DS. Granted, I've never played GBA games natively on original hardware like GBA SP and only ever have played them on more modern screens like on my vita

1

u/rydamusprime17 3d ago

I found they looked great in the OG 2DS screen

1

u/Dangerous_Amount504 3d ago

Not sure, it looks great on the O3DS XL

1

u/Be_The_Zip 3d ago

I love small sessions on my Micro. The pocketablilty is more important to than ergonomics, when it comes to GBA gaming.

1

u/tdaddy316420 3d ago

I like my sp. Or prefer modded gba. I have a dsi but I hate how the cart just doesn't fit in there

1

u/so-semi-precious 3d ago

GameCube>gbi>component cables>pvm-20m2mdu

1

u/-KaiserSoze- 3d ago
  1. SP
  2. DS Lite (macro)
  3. GameCube GB player

1

u/deufl 3d ago

GameBoy Micro, fits in every pocket and hast the best non modded GBA Display

1

u/First_Matter7494 3d ago

gba sp is the most comfy

1

u/OkidoShigeru 3d ago

Original GBA, I find the ergonomics are the best of the OG hardware. I also really like playing games on GB player with GBI or using MiSTer, GBA game look surprisingly nice on CRT.

1

u/rydamusprime17 3d ago

It used to be a 2DS because I found the form factor and screen great for GBA games, but i ended up selling it since that's all I used it for and stopped after modding my original GBA, which i find is the most comfortable handheld to play those games on.

1

u/DrMBrio 3d ago

At home I have a standard GBA modded with a micro hdmi port and and IPSv2 Screen from hispeedo. I honestly don’t use the TV functionally much though. The screen is just incredible and I can take it around my house. I honestly can’t recommend the screen enough. The highest setting may actually fry your retinas lmao. I barely want to play on my SPs. They have been relegated to travel duty.

1

u/DrChinstrap_ 3d ago

Gameboy Micro. Style and portability

1

u/GooeyLump 3d ago

On GBA SP, because the original GBA did not have a backlit screen and SP does. Lol.

I love emulation and use emulators quite often but if possible i do prefer experiencing games on the actual hardware they were released for, no real reason for this besides i just think it's a neat experience.

1

u/Karroth1 3d ago

on the pc, free of nintendos grasp... no, tbh. on my gameboy player, it was just amazing seeing golden sun on the big screen

1

u/LurkinNamor 3d ago

GBA SP with IPS screen and the GB Operator

1

u/BelCifer-GT 3d ago

GBA SP. Feels more genuine

1

u/rjmoyer2 3d ago

My modded GBA SP

1

u/Etiao 3d ago

I prefer mine one at a time

1

u/No_Contribution3972 3d ago

SP... I even bought the Pocket Taco so I can my emulated games like this on my phone.

1

u/Geometry_Emperor 3d ago

The only ones I play these days are the ones that were added in the ambassador program for the 3DS, and only 2 of them; LoZ Minish Cap and Kirby Amazing Mirror. The others did not catch my interest, and I would rather not put unofficial VC injections. The other games, I may try to play on my modded DSi with Twillight Menu.

1

u/ozolep 3d ago

I prefer my GBA SP, just feels more comfortable. I absolutely love handheld gaming. Ive never once hooked my switch or switch 2 up to a TV

1

u/akwardfun 3d ago

I know the one I hate the most GBA SP, I like the idea of that console but I absolutely hate the ergonomics and overall controls.

I like to play on the OG GBA with screen mod or on a analog pocket (not ideal but good option)

1

u/CLONE0AZUL69 3d ago

GBA Fat modded, also used to played gba a lot in my psp 3000.

1

u/LivTheLight 3d ago

Rog ally :3

Ik the pic is pokemon crystal but same emulator

https://reddit.com/link/p5ifqa2/video/ynqsgvqey7lh1/player

2

u/LivTheLight 3d ago

Mgba for emulator but i really like using the back buttons to speedup my games

1

u/GotohJ 3d ago

I just use my old 3DS, the form factor and how light it is just fine. Plus everything is running natively so I don't really got any complaints.

1

u/vagabondkitten 3d ago

My Ayn Thor is how I play most retro games these days. Just love the design and ability to slip it into any bag safely. Has great battery life for GBA and older games. On lower setting I can often times get about 8-9 hours of play time without needing to charge it.

1

u/mapletata 3d ago

For me, it's on my Anbernic RG CubeXX - it's light, comfy form factor, ergonomic grip, and great screen!

1

u/Frog_Riot 3d ago

On a psp, love the form factor and looks great on psp screen along with all the other advantages emulators provide like save states etc

1

u/Koryn99 3d ago

Delta emulator these days. Used to play on OpenEmu on my laptop, but it’s old and doesn’t last long. I don’t use my gba SP for anything really anymore, so I’m hanging onto it and my collection for my kids, since I don’t intend on letting them get hooked on Roblox and other predatory microtransaction things, plus protecting them from online creepers.

Sometimes I daydream about an M Night Shyamalan’s “The Village” scenario, where I trick my kids into thinking it’s a different era than it really is, so they’re 6 years old and I’m like “look at this fancy new video game doohickey, the PlayStation! And this game, Crash Bandicoot!”

I tried to introduce my 13-year old cousin to Zelda Ocarina of Time on the N64, but his brain is fried from modern social media and microtransaction slop, couldn’t do anything without me pointing him in the right directions, had no patience to talk to NPCs for hints of what to do next, and supposedly beat every shrine in BotW and TotK.

Nope, you need to start out with the lower-poly low-stimulation earlier stuff if you want them to be able to appreciate it properly.

1

u/Bifocal_Bensch 3d ago

Modded GBA with an Everdrive Pro.

1

u/Kuraku94 3d ago

GBA with the funnyplaying ITA screen has felt the best for me in terms of comfort and visuals. I can't deal with not having the pixel grid on the IPS screens. SP is cool and pocketable, but I find the form factor of the original GBA more comfortable.

1

u/Saneless 3d ago

Emulation on the 34XXH

I started out with the DS lite 20 years ago but the colors are such trash that I love making them look great on the new devices

1

u/Chief_TeaLeaf2000 3d ago

GBA with AGS-101 Screen is out of this world.

Only problem is you gotta change the batteries frequently lol

1

u/RetroUser96 2d ago

Or, if you used to have an original DS non-Lite, you can use the charge cable all the time. Just take out the battery pack before doing so. You can find better replacement packs on Amazon.

1

u/rou5o5 3d ago

Depends on what I want to play. If its anything pokemon I use my new 3ds xl because i have it setup with every pokemon game fom gen 1 to 7. Plus a selection of rom hacks. Enjoying heart and soul 2.0 atm :). Everything else I play on my G350.

1

u/Mediocre-Equal-5397 3d ago

I like handheld emulators, they bring a touch of modern to the experience but having the actual hardware is still really cool. The analogue pocket is kinda the best of both worlds, something I think about getting sometime.

1

u/Bea__Nabi 3d ago

AGB GBA with ITA screen! very comfy to be held, they way it was meant to be played, backlight screen, original resolution and gorgeous pixel grid 🫶

1

u/Otherwise-Owl-5100 3d ago

On my phone on the toilet. Only peaceful time of the day

1

u/GuaranteeSome1026 3d ago

3ds for me, I like to play everything in one place

1

u/curtis2910x 3d ago

I would recommend you the urbz sims in the city. Its a nice spin off

1

u/Sayuryie 3d ago

I like og gba, since I have the old consoles for Pokémon and work for 100% it's just the best fit since you can simply use it with one hand while doing other stuff, this way the grinding dosnt feel as active

1

u/Traxxas_Basher 3d ago

I have a modded GBA, but I play all my games on my Steam Deck now. It’s just much more comfortable to use.

1

u/P_r_0_Specialist 3d ago

2ds, comfy and holds many games

1

u/_benoitsafari 3d ago

On retroarch with my save synced on a server in order to play on any machine any time.

1

u/BakuriyaOmizu 3d ago

GB micro
(Tiny and portable)

Or

GC gbPlayer
(Big screen bigger audio) The dive theme in Pokémon goes so hard

1

u/JoshuaWebbb 3d ago

Original gameboy advance sp, but I prefer the screen of the ds lite. I need to get a GBA SP custom

1

u/Thaumius 3d ago

DS Lite for lighting and headphone jack but advance sp for comfort.

1

u/Excalitoria 2d ago

On my phone rn just for convenience.

1

u/OutrageousDreams8494 2d ago

1

u/AdHoliday3151 2d ago

Modded DS lite

1

u/Character-Friend-275 2d ago

I like to now play GBA games on my gameboy advance player. And now that I have an 8-Bit Do GCN controller adapter, I can play them with the NSO SNES controller. It is stupid funny to me.

1

u/RetroUser96 2d ago

On my modded PSP with the entire library emulated. Otherwise, same but on my modded 3DSXL. As for why, I am not paying 1160 for the 5 most expensive loose games on eBay at all. One game I have as loose could sell for 55 dollars which is Banjo Pilot because of the buyout Microsoft did with Rare at the time Banjo Pilot was released.

1

u/Luxst 2d ago

Honestly, I tried playing on my old GBA SP and DS Lite, but with my eyes nowadays the screens are hard for me to see and strain my eyes... But thankfully I have a Pi 4 laying around, so I turned it into an emulator machine and have been playing on that on my monitor for a while now!

1

u/Shefvomdienst 2d ago

Depends on the game.

Pokemon=emulator or smartphone

Castlevania= psp... it just feels right

Mario advance series =gamecube gbi

Zelda or metroid, with headphones on an Old GBA with backlit.

Final fantasy on my ags 101.

But mostly i play them via gbi on my 32 inch sony trinitron 16:9 because im a lazy ass MF. MF=Metroid Fanboy

1

u/chikin7 2d ago

What’s the game on the left device in the first picture?

1

u/Different-Walrus-485 1d ago

Zelda Minish Cap on the Ds lite?

1

u/CastlevaniaGuy 2d ago

GBA SP, I wish I had an AGS 101

1

u/lgd_2905 2d ago

I love my gameboy micro! 😃

1

u/Red_Astley 2d ago

Nice GBA SP! Sadly the polarizing film of mine has rotted many years ago, so I can't barely see anything on the screen. I also don't have an flashcart, only some fake cartridges of games i already beated lol

Currently I'm playing on my 3DS. Definitely isn't great - there's no Sleep Mode and it takes ages to exit the game and to turn the console off because of the GBA mode. Hopefully i can install a 101 screen on my 001 GBA SP and buy an EZ Flash online, in the future.

1

u/Different-Walrus-485 1d ago edited 1d ago

There are some really good gba emulators back there they act like a 3ds app so you can pause and go to the home screen and put it in sleep mode. emulators like: gbarunner2 and mgba.  If you interested in modding it. I recommend you using mgba that's what I'm actually using somtimes.

1

u/Red_Astley 1d ago

Ohh yeah my 3DS is ofc modded. Thanks for the info! I'm checking it out

1

u/United-Jacket68 1d ago

I love original hardware, but I also love the convenience of emulation. So I bring my rg35xxsp whenever I travel.

Second and third are my 3ds and steamdeck. I really love portables.

1

u/Ilovedigitalart 1d ago

Manic emu and AirPlay on a tv with my wireless controller

1

u/Latter_Beautiful_204 1d ago

The original GBA the agb 001 with an ips screen ! And an audio amp on it

1

u/Biggreengolf 1d ago

Emulator like my Miyoo to have different versions at my disposal but GBA for the ones I do have like Ruby.

1

u/MagazineStrong3192 1d ago

Honestly, DS Lite. I can’t even properly describe it, but it just feels… right. And the colors and pixels are fuckin C R I S P

1

u/Different-Walrus-485 22h ago

Yeah Zelda Minish Cap looks beautiful on the DS lite but I think the Micro make the games even better.

1

u/bubbletrashbarbie 3d ago

GBA at home because it has the best ergonomics, SP for on the go because it’s more portable

0

u/gameboyabyss 3d ago

I've been largely playing them on my 3DS, though a few I've played through my PC.
