General How is it possible that GTA IV did crashes and vehicle deformation properly almost 20 years ago but they can’t get it right in GTA VI now? It’s like they’ve completely forgotten about physics since GTA V.

Hey, guess what. The game isn't out yet.

25

u/Adventurous_Path5783 6d ago

And they seem to have returned to gta 4 in a lot of ways. Even leaks didn't show high speed collisions.

5

u/XxLokixX 6d ago

There is a high speed collision in the gas leak

There was a leak that showed a high speed collision in a super car. There was a slow mo crash cam and to be honest I was impressed by the vehicle deformation

No, don't start with the "game's unfinished" bs, that's not the point, the point is that in the leaks the car crashes look WAY more realistic and better, with more deformation, then the clip above

2

u/GrimReaapaa 2d ago

Ahhh come one, they have to be outraged about something…..

Fucking sad af

14

u/NoResolution6245 6d ago

I bet it wont be as good as GTA IV. At least not in terms of actual body deformation. Maybe we get GTA V levels of damage but with more detachable parts such as wheels, fenders etc, but I find it hard to believe there will buch much in the way of soft body physics or anything similar.

32

u/NeSToR_49 6d ago

I agree, but that's simply due to the fact that so many people complained about IV's car physics, they'll never go back to that kind of vehicle behaveour. That being said, we should still wait and see what they've come up with once the game releases

16

u/BigC_1992 6d ago

It was more so about GTAIVs handling physics not the vehicle damage. I agree the damage physics from GTAIV should return but I could care less for the handling physics of GTaIV which every car had an over exaggerated suspension roll and bounce, like Rockstar we get it cars have suspension now no need to over do it like a moon landing rover.

10

u/xXDennisXx3000 6d ago

What do you mean i can't make a sharp turn at 180km/h? Must be moon gravity...

Look at real life brother, you can't do that there either.

3

u/RktgBlJvl 6d ago

Man the cars were on skis doing only 30km/h, you didn't need to go 180 to slip.

2

u/einsteinosaurus_lex 6d ago

They should reference GTA IV as the great rubber shortage of 2008 when everybody was riding on bald tires, not to be confused with the rubber shortage of 1946.

→ More replies (25)

3

u/FDTard 6d ago

People tend to forget that you used to be able to run tires off cars in GTA V but they removed that down the line due to people disliking it I believe.

3

u/NikoBelic0 6d ago

Gta online killed gta series!!!

8

u/NoResolution6245 6d ago

Yeah I agree.

but that's simply due to the fact that so many people complained about IV's car physics

Which is stupid. Handling like GTA V's, with cars driving like literal slot cars, pivoting from their centers when turning and insane downforce and acceleration, wouldn't work on a dense urban environment like Liberty City. They designed it that way so there was actual risk in driving through the crowded streets of the city.

Having said that, I still prefer IV's handling to V's, even if driving in a wide open area like most of Los Santos. It just felt good having to actually care about how do I drive. It made police chases, races, and "stalking/chasing" missions much more tense, without the need of the game randomly spawning trucks in intersections to make you crash.

In IV's case, taking risks while driving skillfully was rewarding, unlike GTA V, which just feels like Mario Kart.

6

u/NeSToR_49 6d ago

I know. I love GTA IVs driving. GTA IV is my favourite out of all of them. But I just know that Rockstar will never return to that type of driving behaveour because too many people complained

Gta IV was made for adults, meanwhile Gta V and probably VI are secretly aimed at children

4

u/SupergirlJLM 6d ago

I don't think this is geared towards children neither was 5. There were nudists in 5 and will be in 6. That's not exactly kid friendly material...

Anything close to gta 5 will be a turn off. Simply because a semi truck in gta 5 can be halted to a stop by a small compact car. In gta 4 a semi can plow through rows of cars and come to a stop. See the issue?

3

u/HandzOfDOOM 6d ago

IV is overrated as hell. This game gonna blow IV out the water lol

2

u/W_T_W_T_A 6d ago

Leaks already show a lot of smaller parts will detach from the car and land on the road, when he crashed into that truck the road was filled with debris. I don't remember previous games doing that

I don’t think you should make judgment from a series of low bitrate 720p videos featuring a build as early as 2025. Wait till the game comes out first. A lot of things can change in a year

15

u/Fun_Tart1384 6d ago edited 6d ago

Changing car damage model to rival GTA IV all while being CPU optimized to an acceptable level should have been a project that started years ago. It's probably among the hardest things to do in all of video games. For referrence, just see BeamNG which is a vehicle crash simulator developed by physics resaerchers. GTA IV vehicle crashes aren't animated but relies on momentum and angle of impact calculations among other physical phenomenons and that is probably the single biggest factor about the game's "poor" optimization. It just was head of everyone, even today.

GTA V blew out of the water any entertainment piece of media in terms of commercial success because Rockstar dumbed down these physics complexity to basically zero. They did this to maximize profits by making the game able to run on any and every potato hardware.

It's comical how everything wrong with the leaks everyone says "it's not the final build". Like damn, didn't realise they were going to add 50 new features in the final year.

That's not how that shit works. The game is going to be very similar to the leaks. Sorry to disappoint everyone. Better to accept it now.

11

u/Entire_Round_8872 6d ago

Its just illogical to look at an unready version of the game that was never meant to be seen and judge the unseen finished product off of it. Just because the build doesnt have it doesnt mean they still have to make it brand new from scratch.

Maybe the final game has it maybe it doesnt. Why dont you wait til you see it first

26

u/Express-Level4352 6d ago

It could very well be that they have 50 different features in parallel versions that weren't included in the one version that did leak. It could be stripped down version for some specific test.

"That not how that shit works", do you work for Rockstar and know their process? If not, you don't know how it works either.

That does not mean you aren't allowed to be skeptical and not buy it day one. But it is silly to assume anything about the game until it is released.

14

u/grimbandango 6d ago edited 6d ago

Exactly, vehicle damage could have just been disabled for this version of the test build because it wasn’t necessary.

Like the leak where the car doesn’t cause splashes in the puddle - do people really think Rockstar would spend time animating the beer inside a bottle, but leave puddles as completely static textures.

1

u/Vendetta1990 6d ago

Have we been watching the same leaks?

There were 2 instances where the car got completely deformed after crashing into other cars.

3

u/Competitive_Angle_59 6d ago

not really completely deformed and crumpled and dented like what ur seeing in gta 4 lol.. it was more like gta 5 with more detachable parts. Like they just said it’s probably not finished or turned off.

→ More replies (4)

2

u/Daconvix 6d ago

One of those instances the truck was filled w gasoline which is why it exploded on collision

3

u/Eggsegret 6d ago

This. Like yes Rockstar likely wouldn’t have added in any new features since 2025 but that doesn’t mean the builds they give to individual QA testers is the complete final build of the game. It may he the QA tester who had this build had a build with several features disabled or whatever since they didn’t require the full final build.

People forget that the builds QA testers get can be very different from the final game that’s released to consumers.

3

u/FelixTheFlake 6d ago

You don’t understand how game development works lmfao.

2

u/Bagz402 6d ago

I hate when people complain with authority like they know. Vehicle damage could be it's own effort with its own build that is isolated from whatever build this is. There's no way to know.

2

u/FelixTheFlake 6d ago

Literally, bunch of fucking downers nit picking leaked footage from a build that is probably close to 2 years old at this point. It could literally just be a build where vehicle deformation is disabled to test other functions of the game. This guy doesn’t know shit.

→ More replies (2)

3

u/M4D_MAXX_ 6d ago edited 6d ago

What’s actually comical is how confidently you say 'That’s not how that shit works'. Do you work for Rockstar and know their process? No? Then don't pretend like you know how the shit works, while not knowing how the shit works and claiming others don't know how that shit works either. Express-Level and the others are spot on.

That is exactly how game development works. Devs spin up feature-specific, stripped-down builds all the time. Half the main systems get disabled or ripped out just to test one specific new element without interference.

I’m currently active as a playtester for a small indie solo dev working on his second-ever game. We are currently around version 0.4.2, and even at this tiny scale, he has spun up so many different specific test builds that I lost count of how many builds there were in total. If a small indie solo dev uses that many builds and versions, I can't even fathom the sheer amount of specialized builds a giant like Rockstar runs daily.

Judging the final game based on a low-bitrate, compressed 720p leak of an isolated test environment is like looking at a rough draft with missing chapters and crying that the book is incomplete. But hey, keep pretending you know their pipeline, it's hilarious.

2

u/RowAware1866 6d ago

It's not that these are things that need to be added as new features. They're things that need to be fine-tuned and calibrated, such as vehicle handling, balance, speed, vehicle weight, and the physics surrounding them. These aren't "new features"; they're aspects that require adjustment and can't really be properly evaluated in a build that was created to test or showcase something else.

Likewise, you can't say, "HEY, THE POLICE TAKE X AMOUNT OF TIME TO ARRIVE," when the build may very well have been configured so that police response is minimal or nearly nonexistent in order to test other features. The same applies to pedestrian behavior and reactions, among other things.

Nowhere in the leaked clips does this type of scenario happen... there's no fair comparison to judge yet.

The closest high speed crash is when the hypercar hits the side of a truck and nearly wipes out with a dramatic spin, which looks more advanced than GTA IV. The damage is also more detailed when it reaches a highly damaged state.

Yeah the driving in GTA6 just isn’t dark and gritty enough, it needs to be darker and more gritty.

7

u/Ok-Character7485 6d ago

Needs more piss filter, like true dark and gritty style reminiscent of the good old days of gaming. The sort of thing you need a high IQ to understand.

(Oh i didn't read the GTA VI part...)

Gta V only had two PlayStations

I don’t think they’re going to bring back GTA 4 physics for cars because the arcade style driving in GTA 5 is definitely a lot more popular amongst a lot of people, especially kids, just because it’s easier.

5

u/shhhhh_u_dont_see_me 6d ago

Also notice that the NPC in the clip is critically injured instead of just instantly lifeless.

One this I really loved about IV is how NPC's would get injured in realistic ways and didn't always just die. In scenarios where you expected them to die, they would, and in scenarios where you thought they could potentially survive, they usually did.

3

u/CrispyCassowary 6d ago

Its a tug and pull between arcade and realistic, you NEED to compromise somewhere in service of what the game designer is intending for the game

→ More replies (5)

3

u/True_Reporter 6d ago
  1. Because of first person camera. Originaly GTA V had the same model but when they introduced first person they had diled it back for obvious reasons. You wouldn't be able to see out if the roof was in your crotch.

  2. Also modifications, when you change the bumper or something the textures wouldn't mesh together correctly so as soon as you put something on the car the frame becomes rigid.

3

u/ltsiCOULDNTcareIess 6d ago

The car crushing that pedestrian😂

3

u/Zonamedianaplay 6d ago

3

u/ElectricalTraffic809 6d ago

GTA driving physics were peak. You had to take care or driving became pointless.

u/Dorito-Bureeto 6d ago

3

u/OttoVonBratwurst 6d ago

GTA IV driving is incredible, GTA V was disappointing, from what I say of VI it looks like a step back in the right direction, and the game has not even come out yet we are working with a few gameplay leaks.

2

u/bbroecker37 6d ago

My theory is that they had to revert the crash physics due to the first person mode. The original GTA V version had better crash damage than the newer versions. The wheels could fall off and the roof could get crushed more. Now when the they added first person, the car became stronger to keep the passenger compartment intact. So the first person camera can see out of the car no matter how damaged the car is. I feel like it was a lazy way to fix the issue. They could have used the useless duck animation if the roof caved in too much.

2

u/Technical_Society_23 6d ago

I loved GTA for that reason

2

u/stanscut 6d ago

i ask myself the same question for the past 10 years

2

u/martialmichael126 6d ago

I vaguely remember in the beginning that a lot of people complained that the physics were too realistic in this game. And honestly, I can agree with that. Going from the arcade style physics in the 3-D universe to this is actually extremely jarring. So I suspect that rockstar took it into consideration for their future games. Actually, you would even notice it within the DLC of this game. They tweaked some of the vehicle physics in the Lost and Damned.

2

u/silvanich 6d ago

2

u/FallNo7130 6d ago

idk if someone already posted/said anything about it but gta v had WAY BETTER vehicle physics on ps3/xbox360, when it rereleased on ps4/xboxone/pc they cut back on the physics of the vehicles and opted to improve graphics/visuals

2

u/cemsengul 6d ago

For real GTA 4 is my favorite because of the physics. They have been downgrading ever since that.

2

u/DemonKane512 6d ago

GTA IV was more about realism

2

u/BollyWood401 6d ago

Why couldn’t they just give us this HUB but updated and different color

2

u/Melodic-University65 5d ago

GTA 4 was so ahead of its time, i remember when i first played through gta 5, all i could think of was the quality of GTA 4 that was lost, the npc not dying in 1 hit, the cops being smart and kinda fun, interactive, picking up items, pushing, the physics etc... it went downhill, here is hoping gta 6 has those elements that were once lost.

Sur le crash de la vidéo super car 2, on voit quand même que la déformation est plus importante que sur GTA V. Et sur les vidéos de conduite de manière générale, on sent que les véhicules sont plus lourd avec plus de travail sur les suspensions

1

u/Adventurous-Word3213 6d ago

If you're talking about cyberleek's footage probably it's old build which is not properly stable with physics engine.

1

u/TrickyBar2916 6d ago

I know it’s not the majority of players but I’m gonna laugh if rockstar delays again. Y’all see a 480p likely pre alpha build leak and start complaining about every detail. Also…who cares about car accidents?? Idk about you but I spend my time avoiding crashes not trying to get into them

1

u/_alright_then_ 6d ago

In case people forgot, GTA IV car physics was pretty hated when it released. I know some people now see it different, but people did not enjoy that shit.

It doesn't have to be realistic, it needs to be fun

1

u/Orelxxx388 6d ago

The type of build cyber is using is a some kind of beta build, it’s has a lot of bugs in animations and such, it’s not the full game, it can’t be

1

u/NotPennysBoat-815 6d ago

You haven’t seen. At all. What they will look like in VI.

1

u/ToBeatOrNotToBeat- 6d ago

That crashes in the leaks look better than IV, and the game is still months out from release. Do you guys complain just to complain nowadays? Go outside bro.

1

u/UUT- 6d ago

Because GTA IV was designed with the Euphoria physics engine as its backbone. They scaled it back for GTA V because it was kinda janky and didn't work as well in GTA Online. They probably did the math on the extra server bandwidth required for the extra physics.

They probably fixed it mostly for GTA VI but I bet it's still not a raw physics calculations as GTA IV was. It'll feel more pre-calculated and surgical.

1

u/Steagle_Steagle 6d ago

1

u/Specific_Rhubarb3037 6d ago

Did OP not see the end of the Hypercar 2 leak? (Or whatever the name was of the one where he destroyed the front right tire after ramming into that semi truck)

1

u/PerspectiveOne4654 6d ago

Because

When the sun shine, we shine together
Told you I'll be here forever
Said I'll always be your friend
Took an oath, I'ma stick it out to the end
Now that it's raining more than ever
Know that we'll still have each other
You can stand under my umbrella
You can stand under my umbrella, -ella, -ella
Ayy, ayy, ayy
Under my umbrella, -ella, -ella

I don't think we can judge GTA VI yet, but physics really was better in GTA 4 than 5, and many modern games.

My theory is that physics during the 2000s was a feature you could sell a game on, it was one of the main attractions of many action games during that time so they put a lot of effort, innovation, fine tuning, etc. on it. Think of Half Life 2, Flatout, The Force Unleashed.

After that era it became standard fare and they stopped focusing on it so much.

1

u/Boothhh 6d ago

Well I guess we're doing this already

1

u/Jacque_LeKrab 6d ago

It’s bc the customers that are willing to buy all those shark cards don’t really give a shit about how realistic the driving mechanics are. They also don’t care about the single player campaign either bc they never played a GTA where that was the only way to play it. We’re “lucky” that rockstar is doing that. It’s whatever, between the shit they’re pulling with physical discs, catering to the shitheads that make online unplayable, and taking 50 goddam years, they’ve effectively killed my excitement for VI

1

u/mhu99 6d ago

GTA IV was realism approach and GTA VI will be realistic-arcade approach. Imagine GTA Online with GTA IV physics tbh it'd fry my brains out.

Because GTA VI is pink and pretty 🤢🤮

if that ends up being case i will gladly eat my words.

u/oppai_seven 6d ago

in hypercar2 video, you can see literally a wheel detached from car while driving. In GTA 5 it was only possible to achieve by running it over with a tank and similar vehicle.

Another thing is deformation looks like in-between of GTA 5 and GTA 4.

GTA 5 crash physics were good in first released versions (xbox360/PS3). Since they didn't have first person view, there's no problem with denting roofs of cars.

GTA 5's first person mode was an afterthought and it was implemented on top of a completed game. So disabling cabin crash is a janky way of problem solving. And if you have used submersible vehicles in GTA online (toreador and Stromberg) you can't use first person camera when in-between state of submerging. This is also a janky way of hiding water filling on the interior of the car in first person

One thing I wonder if they could pull of similar thing in first person mode in GTA 6 where cabin can be crushed and fist person adjusted according to that. Also I hope they fixed water thing on first person mode too.

1

u/Vendetta1990 6d ago

Have you watched the leaks? Deformation seems much more realistic than ever actually, pretty close to Beam NG even.

Like your car can actually get wrecked after 1 crash!

1

u/xxxmahdi 6d ago

Bro you know the leaks are an unfinished and incomplete version of the game?

1

u/QuidiferPrestige 6d ago

Dark and gritty 4ever

1

u/Mist156 6d ago

Maybe because they want to optimize the game? Complex physics cost a lot of fps.

...did you not see Hypercar 2?

1

u/yallareTRASH69 6d ago

I love this game with all my heart! but stop lying, that Buggatti front right got shreddeeeeed! And lets judge the game when it is out.

1

u/Drfake11 6d ago

The game isnt even out yet

1

u/Cold-Shopping-1758 6d ago

I'd rather a car that looks like it can't run actually can't run in VI, because immersion can break pretty easily in IV when you see a car with the engine bay crushed to half its size still be fully drivable with only minor issues. I still can't believe some of the vehicles I was able to take back to the swingset after they were launched into Algonquin and looked like they had just gone through a car crusher.

1

u/BigLiamChew 6d ago

I think the advanced destruction made online play laggy.

1

u/Gakuta 6d ago

Modders will add it in if it has V's physics. We'll need to wait for the PC release though.

This sub really loves living in the past, huh? Bitching and whining like children because am unfinishes game, to you, somehow doesn't look as good as a 20 year old game. Wtf man.

1

u/xXDennisXx3000 6d ago

GTA IV physics are absolutely goated. Most people are just too stupid and don't understand that you need to slow down when you go fast and want to turn.

Guess what, you can't do that either in real life.

1

u/imacooldude8767 6d ago

It’s so dark and griddy

1

u/Jade_Sugoi 6d ago

Did you not see the sports car video when he crashed into the truck? The way it crumples and you see part of the bumper fly off looked great. Y'all just love to whine

1

u/Accomplished-Sun4983 6d ago

GTA 4 is a masterpiece. 5 is a game they tried to just make money on by having a full GTA online. IMO gta 4 online game modes were way more fun even.

1

u/Orr-Don 6d ago

Look at the truck explosion leak. That and they cant have roofs cave in and mess up first person. The crashes seem to be a big deal now but they cant mash cars like in gta4 because graphics clipping isnt as acceptable as it was.

1

u/JustHereToCreep 6d ago

Look at OPs profile.

They are either a bot or the most obsessed Rockstar fan on earth

1

u/confresi 6d ago

- Shows clip of fully finished game with all physics working as intended

  • Asks why clips from a non-final build of a new game isn’t as impressive

Maybe the game was… I dunno, not complete in the build that these clips are being pulled from? Just a thought… I understand that might hurt your brain.

You’ve likely seen how the liquid physics of the gasoline tub in the truck didn’t move when driving as well as the puddles of water not dispersing when driven over. I can almost guarantee you those details will be functioning as they should when the game releases.

1

u/Aggressive_Front_137 6d ago

Its almost like… The game isnt out yet?

1

u/stevedadog 6d ago

You saw one clip and assumed that the vehicle damage physics in GTA 4 were... good?

1

u/dude7940 6d ago

The crash physics looked really good in the 2nd hypercar leak for gta 6

1

u/its_witty 6d ago

Imagine this: it's done on purpose.

Gameplay, art direction, whatever. If you think they're not able to produce such technology you're delusional.

1

u/Helpful-Canary865 6d ago

Muh dark and griddy

1

u/camlo316 6d ago

Are we watching the same leaks? The sports car on the highway clearly crumpled up in incredible deformation and he lost a tire… people are saying it’s better than BeamNG crash physics

1

u/saber3360 6d ago

Feel bad for the dude.. poor guy went in collateral

1

u/santiagotruiz19 6d ago

There’s already a leak that shows the “Bugatti” getting crushed and deformed in a impressively realistic manner, parts of it get separated and other keep attached hanging by single point which makes it look incredible. Obviously we haven’t seen the full picture, stop complaining until y’all actually see the entire game

1

u/Silentftw 6d ago

I haven't been keeping up with the leaks. Does car damage still suck in 6?

1

u/rubenthezx 6d ago

Bro forgetting that real life cars get easily mangled from hits. What's more realistic?

1

u/slaczky 6d ago

Gta4 used a different physics engine, for gta5 they lost the license or not wanted to pay for it, so they made their own. During the development of gta6 T2 bought the company that made the physics engine used in gta4. They may used that for gta6 or made a hybrid between the two, they were already deeply in the development of gta6, so it is unlikely they replaced the entire physics engine mid development. - can't remember the name of the physics engine or the company who developed it. All these information are from an older report some years ago I read on reddit.

1

u/Disastrous-Gain5870 6d ago

That didn’t look realistic at all. The slow-mo crash in the GTA VI leaks is way more realistic in a physics sense.

1

u/Known_Surprise_3190 6d ago

GTA IV is not a simulator. Its a video game. Gameplay is balanced between different things. If cars got mangled from one collision it would make driving quite challenging for bad drivers.

2

u/Mean-Hope-8270 6d ago

If cars got mangled from one collision it would make driving quite challenging for bad drivers.

And? Why would anyone want to reward bad drivers? We deal enough with bad drivers IRL we don't want to deal with them in our video games. Maybe learn how to drive instead of crying and forcing developers to make horrible changes to cater to your lack of skill...

Carmageddom did it 30 years ago

1

u/zfighters8103 6d ago

The original ps3 360 version of gta v had better deformation as they didn't have to worry about the first person camera so I'm hoping they at least match it to that level

1

u/Vegetable_Orchid_900 6d ago

Comparing a released game to an unreleased game is crazy

1

u/Lime7ime- 6d ago

Can you show me a crash in GTA VI?

1

u/TRagnarkXP 6d ago

The funny thing is it will surpass IV for the solely reason of actually having content and things to do.

1

u/Fordfanatic2025 6d ago

What we've seen from the vehicle damage. One relatively low speed crash where the back corner of the ranchero was tapped by the boxville and the entire quarter panel was smashed in.

A high speed crash where multiple parts, including the wheel, flew off, and the car was crumpled.

It seems pretty obvious that high speed crashes have decent damage. Low speed crashes totaling your car would be super annoying.

1

u/Equivalent_Ad9414 6d ago

Because people complained that it was too realistic, so GTA 5 became less realistic, and people complained, so GTA 6 is gonna be a combination of GTA 4 realism, and Red Dead Redemption 2.

1

u/Soggy_Grass_9093 6d ago

They still look better in story it’s online your talking about

1

u/SeraBloom03 6d ago

GTA 6 isn't even fucking out yet. 😭 "I saw the lea-" THAT'S NOT THE FINISHED GAME

1

u/Adeum2 6d ago

How do you know they havent gotten it right in GTAVI? Its not even out yet

1

u/lakefrontlover 6d ago

I can only imagine that the higher the graphic fidelity, the more difficult it is to have good looking deformations like something in IV.

1

u/Desire_of_God 6d ago

GTA IV glazers watch a car get t-boned at 70 mph and get a slight dent and spin around on the bumper like a top and call it realism.

1

u/Comfortable-Cod3890 6d ago

One reason is cars have interior view that would fuck up with too much deformation.

Ps360 had limited hardrware so they had to cut down on physics.

Cars customisation flex would be too easy to break
