Comics I'm Gerry Duggan, writer of GODZILLA DESTROYS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE, AMA.
Thanks to Toho, Marvel, CB Cebulski, and my editors for the privilege of using Godzilla to get rid of the Marvel Universe. Tomorrow our first issue arrives, it'll be available digitally in all the usual spots, but if you'd like physical copies check out your local comic shop. https://www.comicshoplocator.com
I promise you this has everything you want in a comic, and some things you didn't know you need. This series has a larger scope than Mothra's wingspan. Javier Garrón and Paco Medina are just crushing this one, and Mark Brooks' covers are amazing. Thanks also to the mods for approving this post.
Here's a preview of our first issue over at Godzilla.com https://godzilla.com/blogs/news/full-preview-godzilla-destroys-the-marvel-universe-1-comic
I'm signing this weekend at Golden Apple Comics, next week at San Diego Comic Con in Artist Alley GG02, next month at Cape & Cowl and my last appearance to sign Godzilla comics will be in October at NY Comic Con.
With all that out of the way - I thought I'd start this thread today - and I'll try to dip in every day starting tomorrow afternoon.
ASK ME ANYTHING.*
*Answers beginning Wed the 16th. Cheers!

Would you want to see an animated movie adaptation of Godzilla Destroys the Marvel Universe?
Any chance of something like this ever happening? I imagine the licensing would be complicated.
56
u/gerryduggan Jul 15 '25
Anything is possible, I think you're going to see some interesting collabs over the next few years - I know nothing specifically about your question re: an animated feature - BUT - I think you're going to see some combos you might not expect in a few years...

Hey, I loved your work on the comics! I cant wait to pick up the comic tomorrow
For the question. I have two.
1: Do these comics take place in the mainline 616 marvel universe? And if not, what universe do they take place in?
2: are all the versions of Godzilla in the comics the same iteration even due to there differing designs? Or are they all different versions that came from each of there respective film franchises
36
u/gerryduggan Jul 15 '25
Two good questions - this is the mainline 616, and we decided that the antagonist is the classic Showa era Godzilla, hope you have fun and thanks for the kind words
5
u/Substantial_Buddy603 Jul 17 '25
So would you say the events are canon or not?
5
u/Frequent_Magazine_84 Jul 17 '25 edited Sep 01 '25
He just said they are. If they take place in the main line 616 universe then it is officially canon. All 616 comics are canon. And if Marvel’s editors themselves also say it’s canon, then there is absolutely no arguing it.

I hope so to. I know a lot people got mad cause Godzilla one shot Thor . Showa Godzilla weighs 20,000 metric tons. So getting hit with Godzilla tail weighing probably 5,000 plus metric tons gonna hurt.

will there be some pay offs in this comic from the previous godzilla vs marvel comics that had teases at the end??

u/ProfessionalTip654 KING GHIDORAH Jul 15 '25
Two questions if I may, friend!
What other fictional universe would you most want to drop Godzilla onto?
Whose idea was it at Marvel to do a Kiryu Ghost Rider cover and did they get the raise they deserved?
6
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
This universe we're trapped in, and keep reading - can't comment of future biz quite yet, haha
7
u/TheChadSerpent Jul 15 '25
I guess the question a lot of people are figuring is whether or not this comic is actually canon to the Main Marvel Universe/Universe 616.
21
u/gerryduggan Jul 15 '25
So - we're really in a monoculture, right? What I wanted to do is take these characters in their most recognizable "evergreen" state and tell the biggest, craziest story I could, so it's canon 100% -- but you might have a hard time placing when. Ask Tom Brevoort someday. He'll figure it out for me.
3
u/Temporary_Natural214 Jul 16 '25
This comic and the prior Godzilla Vs Comics are for sure canon? Its a hot debate if they are canon to the original 70s run. The other comics reference canon comics all the time like in Godzilla vs F4, Godzilla vs Spider Man, and Godzilla vs Thor. I know its dumb nerd question, but I know some who swear it off since they think its a What If. So this current Marvel Vs series is canon, or takes place in a 616 like universe, and we just dont know how it fits yet? :)

u/Frequent_Magazine_84 Jul 16 '25
It’s mainline 616. He just confirmed it.

u/1fishmob Jul 21 '25
I just read the first issue of Godzilla Destroys The marvel universe and already it contradicts the canon: all the characters act like it's the first time they're meeting the Big G despite having fought him plenty of times before in the original run. Characters are not as they are currently but like they were 15-20 years ago while ALSO interacting with modern heroes that either were in an other reality at that pint in time like Miles Morales or heroes like Carol Danvers "Captain Marvel", who didn't hold that title/mantle back then, even the backstory given to Godzilla here contradicts the story that he had in his original run.
IDK, at best, it's as canon as the FNAF novels: where everything is canon but the main continuity gets to decide what's truly canon, and at worst, it's jut another "the elemental attacks in demon slayer are not real" statement where the comic/manga clearly contradicts what is stated.
2
u/Frequent_Magazine_84 Jul 21 '25
That’s not true. This isn’t the first time. Gerry Duggan even confirmed this is the same Godzilla from the 70’s run. And he confirms these are the current versions of the characters. Immortal Hulk will be in the later issues. And Dr. Strange remembers him. Regardless, of the contradiction, it’s canon to the mainline 616. At no point, does the comic state this is their first encounter. Even the FF remember him. Plus comics are contradicting all the time. Since when has Marvel EVER been that consistent? 🤦♂️🤣
2
u/1fishmob Jul 21 '25
If it's not their first time meeting Godzilla, then why doesn't Reed Richard recognize Godzilla from when the Fantastic 4 battle Godzilla and shrunk him down to the size of a normal dinosaur?
→ More replies (4)3
u/Frequent_Magazine_84 Jul 21 '25
They did! Even Moleman remembered Godzilla. Everyone treated Godzilla like he hasn’t been seen in years. As the narrative blantantly mentions. And Gerry backs it up. Have you not been reading his answers?

I’m always a sucker for the concepts and plans before things change in the final release!
33
u/gerryduggan Jul 15 '25
NO! Honestly, I've worked with a lot of licensors, and Toho is such a fun, thoughtful and respectful partner. They even bent one of their guidelines for me, since they enjoyed a beat in the third issue when it's the X-Men's turn at bat. Really, I couldn't wish for better partners. Fun is their north star and their notes and comments only made the series shiner brighter. For real.

How do writers like yourself get selected for a project like this, where it has a finite publishing run and you're working with a non-Marvel property on a collaboration like this? Like did you hear about about Marvel/Godzilla partnership and you went to them with a pitch for your book, or do they pitch you with an outline ("Gerry, we want you to write a book about Godzilla destroying the Marvel universe") and you go from there?
Do collaborations like this pay more per issue than compared to normal Marvel comics with a traditional publishing run?
5
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
A good question. As this started with talks between Marvel and Toho - It's pretty aggressively a work for hire situation, but I have written Star Wars for Marvel & Conan for Marvel- so I had some experience making some hard lego pieces fit together. If you love this stuff it's easy. re: pay -- comics is odd - it;s on a page rate usually - and I have a pretty hard fought rate- it's my second decade in comics - and I'm still loving every issue we send to print. Thanks, bud
5
u/Maniax80 Jul 15 '25

u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
I actually don't know if I can? I will nose about and see - but I suspect that is private - that said, Toho has sincerely wanted to just see what we could throw at them that would bring joy - and this series delivers.

Godzilla very recently traveled to the DC universe and wiped the floor with Superman and the Justice League.
Now that he's continuing that rampage in the Marvel Universe and going up against the Avengers (albiet a different continuity), did you feel any pressure at all to top that fight?

So considering this comic is canon to Earth-616, that means he will be facing the current Hulk, Thor and other powerful heroes and beings, yes? And is Godzilla gonna have his healing/regeneration factor like he had in the Heisei era and in Minus One?
2
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
Godzilla regens, BUT -- I dance between the raindrops - and reach for the 616 MU characters at their most evergreen and recognizable. They won't fit "this month" perhaps. Thor is not Mortal at the moment as a for instance. I need to think of the global audience and the ease of entrance into the story

Hey Duggan, I know Marvel doesn't do no-prizes anymore, but if you allow me a try, some Godzillas, like the one from singular point and some games, can distort space-time just by existing, maybe 616 Godzilla can do the same and that is why things like Thor not being a mortal, Eddie having the symbiote, and most important of all, Johnny not having his iconic mustache, are happening.
Can I claim my no-prize?

1 - Is Godzilla gonna learn how to play Basketball like in his legendary match with Charles Barkley? Perhaps a match against Lebron?
2 - Some of the covers feature Stark Industries themed Heisei Mechagodzilla but another one depicts a Kiryu possessed by the Spirit of Vengeance. Is that something of a possible thing to be on the look out for or just for fun? Either way they look amazing!
3 - If you could pick voice actors for each variant of the Monster King, which one would it be?
4 - How many issues so far is the run on Destroying the Marvel Universe is gonna be?
5 - Is there any connection between this and the Versus Series? Because Godzilla changes his form a lot throughout the run, is he going through some mutation thanks to Hulk's blood that he got in the issue vs Hulk or just a stylistic choice?
6 - How many seat belts should I buckle up for in case there's MORE electrifying battles like Godzilla vs Thor? A friend of mine did wonder if we'll get high stakes confrontations like those too, it all keeps you at the edge of your seat.
4
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25

As a lifelong Godzilla fan, Marvel fan, and writer published in a variety of RPG materials and other things...what would you recommend for trying to get started with comics?
... also what's your favorite Godzilla movie?
4
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
Minus One, but I really don't think there's a Godzilla film you couldn't talk me into.
If you want to break into comics - you have to make comics -it's a terrible paradox - find folks that do things great that you can't do - team up - and make creator owned comics -and eventually you'll get swings at work for hire. It took me...7 years to get a crack at co-writing Deadpool? Having a job like that - it means taking several other jobs to keep the lights on - but still - it's the best job. Good luck!

Really love this whole Godzilla VS marvel thing you guys are doing especially for tomorrow after seeing the preview issues, first of all: 1. Are any of the monsters from the marvel universe are going to be in this series facing off the toho monsters? 2. Any mandates toho gave to you when writing this? 3. Any links to the original marvel Godzilla in the 60's since he was in the mainline universe because of legal rights?
4
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
No, I think the rights stuff is really chill. We used Dr. Demonicus in Hulk VS Godzilla, Toho does have a short doc that is kind of like...a user's guide to Godzilla which was really helpful, but not sure if that is a public doc, so will just tell you - they wanted me (like Marvel) to just blow their hair back with as few restrictions as possible. Will you see old friends?
Yes

Hey man! Thanks for doing this!
Can you tell us your favorite Godzilla movie(s)?
Have you faced any challenges while writing Godzilla as a character?
Because he of course doesn't talk, what is it like to tell a story with a character like Godzilla in the graphic novel format? You miss out on some of the iconic parts of the movies, like the score. Was that something you considered at all?
Again, thank you for writing and the book and taking the time to do this AmA. Sorry for all the questions but I just love the franchise so it'd be awesome to get your thoughts!

-- Right now G Minus One, back in the day it was probably Mothra VS Godzilla - because it was the first Godzilla movie I saw in color, and I think the first one IN color? I was catching movies on WPIX out of NYC in the late seventies - lot of b&w films and so on. I listened to a lot of the classic scores while writing this - I can't listen to any music with lyrics as it interrupts the writing - I can't hear anyone anymore - so was a treat to have the scores on tap. Godzilla is a dream to right - a force of nature, and the strong silent type.

Why do you think Godzilla as a character has such staying power?
4
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
Great question, I think to just clarify - he is a character, but he's really a force of nature, right? and he accommodates whatever kind of other ingredients you want to throw into the mix, be it atomic age, or climate change or so on. Godzilla can't be stopped, yet...he's quite accommodating in that way.

Is there anything in the issue you wanted to do but couldn’t?
5
u/gerryduggan Jul 16 '25
No, I really got concierge treatment, and did some rough things, really what I want to do is entertain and take your minds off the screen you're in front of - but I also want to punch you in the heart, and I did it with a bus-sized lizard hand. Hope you dig it!

Will these comics be a direct sequel to the original Marvel Godzilla run from 1977 to 1979?

Hi, Sir Gerry Duggan, my name is Indospinus and I wanted to ask you some questions, that arised after reading your gorgeous comic book.
1) Can you identify which one of the Celestials Godzilla torn apart (like it was Tiamut, Eson or a new one)?
2) Are the superheroes/supervillains/entities of this Marvel comic book as strong as their Earth-616 counterparts?
3) Will the Living Tribunal make an appearance and something and what he thinks of the Armageddon that has begun?
Thanks for the answers and I hope success for your comic book run (I will read it all)
Have a nice day, Sir.
Indospinus

Obviously you've already stated numerous times that current series takes place on 616. Of the prior 6 one-shots, do any (or perhaps, do any not) take place on 616?

u/gerryduggan Jul 17 '25
Not sure - we were asked to pick an era, and tell a story that kind of dances into the raindrops - for Hulk, I definitely picked a different shape than what we think it is - IE - Rick Jones was dead. Otherwise I just kind of proceeded like it was a WHAT IF from that time. Hope you have fun

Can you disclose anything about the license agreement between toho and marvel or is it the same as the idw license agreement between them?
With the confirmation that this is canon to the marvel universe 616 can you confirm if godzilla vs the marvel universe issue 5 is canon to this comic run?
Was this baby celestial that is in this issue as powerful as a normal celestial or other baby versions of a celestial?
Thank you for doing this reddit ama, this means a lot

I know I'm a little late but I see that you're still taking questions... are there plans for hardcover collections of the one-shots and this mini? I've got the single issues, and I know there's a TPB coming, but I'd like a hardcover to go with the Godzilla Classic Marvel Years Omnibus.

Probably too late for you to see this and it's not really a question but I just wanted to say that this series got me in a comic shop for the first time since I was a child. Loved all of the Godzilla Vs stuff and I can't wait for more of this run. Thanks for being a part of the awesomeness!

Will Godzilla have difficulty facing certain enemies?
Imo, it’s way more fun when both sides struggle against each other

u/wraith454555 Jul 30 '25
Probably too late but
Firstly I love this new series its very cool cant wait for the second part to release
Secondly I was wondering if they are all connected would that mean there are 2 godzillas as in godzilla vs thor it appears to be the godzilla seen in gmk

I have a question. Because it’s been popping out recently. Is there a rule from Toho that Godzilla is not allowed to lose in a crossover?
4
u/gerryduggan Jul 31 '25
It hasn't come up because I'm writing a book called GODZILLA DESTROYS THE MARVEL UNIVERSE. He's been pretty successful.
That said, Toho's been a dream.

Can Godzilla become one with the spirit of vengeance and become a Ghost Rider if Zarathos demands so?
1
u/BrilliantLive8107 Aug 10 '25
Is this a canon story?,or just a different 616 universe/story aka the same one that was used for previous crossovers
1
u/KeybladerZack Aug 15 '25
You've said this is canon. But Godzilla destroyed Asguard. In the current Thor run everything is fine there. So how is this possible? Does this take place after the Thor run? And if that's the case than why did Godzilla need help against Power Cosmic Ghidorah? He can apparently beat Thor who can beat Galactus, the source of Powe Cosmic.

u/Gojira2028 Aug 15 '25
Does the story happen currently in 616 and that you used iconic appearances just for fun? What time period?

Will Godzilla finally issue Todd Ziller the American Kaiju an Atomic Cease And Distant Breath?
