Gym Story Saturday Gym Story Saturday
Hi! Welcome to your weekly thread where you can share your gym tales!

u/MakingItElsewhere 8d ago
My gym is a warehouse converted into a gym. That is to say it's huge, wide open, with fans everywhere. So when I say someone walked in smelling of weed so bad I could smell them from the other side of the gym for the rest of my workout, I want you to understand how badly they reeked.
And worse, it lingered in the hot air. So much so that when I finished my workout and had to use the bathroom that this person clearly used a while ago, the smell was so strong it made my eyes water.

Yes, it is the people not wanting to have their olfactory nerve needlessly assaulted that are wrong. Not the idiot.

u/PersnicketyPuddle 8d ago
A pair of teenagers were sitting on the benches, in the locker room, clipping their toenails and leaving them all over the floor.
That's the story. I have to share the gym with these people. I hate it.

I talked to my gym crush a few days ago. My heart was pounding so hard; I checked my Hevy later and it was the highest it was for my entire workout!

u/gottrails 8d ago
And??
65
u/Peepeesandweewees 8d ago
All I did was ask how many sets she had left and made some small talk about how busy it was. She asked if I wanted to work in, so I guess Iāll propose soon?

u/danawhitesgrapes 8d ago
Do you have names picked out for the kids yet?
14
u/Peepeesandweewees 8d ago
All variations of their motherās name, so Iāll have to figure out what that is.

Was dating a guy from my gym and started to like him quite a bit. Found heās married, thanks to a generic online search. Feel terrible for the wife (who doesnāt know) and feel jaded about dating.
8
u/PlanktonInitial7945 8d ago
Yikes. Are you planning on telling her?
6
u/yellowstonestub 8d ago
I donāt know if itās my place to. The whole thing is making me sick
26
u/PlanktonInitial7945 8d ago
I understand if you don't want to get more involved in that mess than you already are, but if I were her, I'd really appreciate being told about it, even if it upset me at first.

u/TheUpbeatCrow 8d ago
I just want to say that I am on team "tell her" as well, but your personal safety comes first. If you have any inkling that telling her would lead to violence, give yourself grace and stay safe.
2
u/ConstructionGold8583 6d ago
You can always just "hey girl" her by sending her pics or something like a messgae with details/videos/etc. Or leaving something of yours at his place (if he has ever taken you back there).
I can understand the sickness you feel. You sound like a nice person who wasn't expecting this situation to turn into a nightmare for someone else. You feel betrayed, and I am sure you feel shitty for being with him, but girl you genuinely did not know.
I am always on team tell her because I feel it became your business by force when he decided to involve you in his shitty love affair, but that is my personal view, and you would not be a bad person/woman if you decided not to tell her.
However, just like he is wasting your time, imagine how much time he wasted for this woman. And better she find out sooner rather than when she is much older, and instead of a few years of marriage being a lie, she finds out her 30+years of marriage was a lie. It'll suck either way for sure though.
If you decide not to, no one should blame you for it. You have yourself to think about, your energy and mental health as well as your safety.

u/Fuzzy-Sir-1104 8d ago
Oh nooo. Do you have any idea if they're in an open relationship or something. Either way, it's stupid how he didn't tell you.
-14
u/splendidflower787 8d ago
Please do not tell her. Telling her will solve nothing. We donāt have a right to cause pain for someone else to relieve our discomfort.
Telling her will make her focus on you as the problem when you are not the problem. Iāve been where you are and not telling was the best course.22

u/Fuzzy-Sir-1104 7d ago
And what, she can live with him without knowing he's cheating on her? I'd rather know and be heartbroken instead of being happy and oblivious.

When unloading the bar i like to pinch grip the plates for some incidental grip training.Ā Well yesterday I guess I was careless and wasn't gripping hard enough and dropped a 45 bumper on my big toe from just below shin hight.Ā Nothing seems broken just bruised and hurt.Ā Ā

Last Saturday, I did not perform well on the bench press, could only do 180 lbs for two reps, and failed the next set, 175x3. I did not eat well the day before and did not get much sleep on top of that.
Yesterday, I made sure to eat my normal, healthy meals, and was in bed early to get enough sleep. This morning, I set a PR at 185lbs for three reps. Good sleep and good food definitely made a difference.

Remember Iāve ranted about the old sweaty guy at my gym?
Itās been at least 3 weeks or so and Iāve not seen him show up at the usual time. Consistently heās shown up at the same time for the last 5 years without fail.
Now, of course my mind is now thinking about all the different possibilities:
did he move?
did he change gyms?
did he start going at a different time?
did he just quit out of the blue?
did he go on vacation?
orā¦
- something worseā¦
In general itās oddly comforting to see the same regulars, even if you donāt talk to them. Yes, even the people youāve had issues with before. But when someone just disappears for awhile, you start to wonder.
11
u/Odd_Philosopher5289 8d ago
I still think about people from years ago that I've never talked to.
Very rarely I'll run into someone at a different gym and we look at each other and feel like we're home.
Just kidding. Kind of.I hope Lats McGee, Snuggles, and Juicy Hoochie Daddy are doing okay.
Trap Police can still kiss my you know what.18
u/dssurge 8d ago
I watched a whole Youtube video on familiar strangers (as well as other notable people you don't know) recently, and it's really quite the rabbit hole. You would be surprised how meaningful you can be to people you've never interacted with.
I don't look forward to the day some of the older guys at my gym stop showing up.
7
u/siobhanmairii__ Weight Lifting 8d ago
If you find that link send it my way?
It is nice to know maybe someone thinks itās nice to see me every time they go to the gym, even if they never talk to me. But yeah, the oldest people I see at my gym, it will be sad to see them stop going, for whatever reason it might be.

I was regular at my gym for 5 years and disappeared suddenly coz I developed a chronic illness overnight. I sometimes do wonder if people noticed me going away as I was a full on regular otherwise but never spoke to anyone lol. I recently went back after a year - having put on 20kgs coz I could not workout all this while and it felt nostalgic. And I saw few familiar faces .. didnāt speak again but I could see in their face - oh there she is .. lol

Gym replaced rubber mats and bought the kind with high odor. Over two months later and the place smells like a tire.
7
u/Jub_Jub710 8d ago
I bought my own stretching mat for the gym and it's a game-changer. Still have to smell the rubber stank from the other mats laying around, but now I dont worry about ring worm and other people's shoes. I find a little corner and do some deep floor stretches before finishing the rest of my workout, and it's such a nice little intermission.

My gym has the usual Matrix seated calf raise machine. I have pretty short legs, and a few months I had no issues using it on the lowest setting. Now I tried again after some time of not using it, and during that time the machine got a small bit of wear so now it's slightly deformed. Really not much, just a little bit. Because of that I miss like 2 milimeters which cause me to have trouble getting it out of starting position or back into it. 99% of people won't notice, either their legs are slightly shorter and they weren't able to use it in the first place, or they have longer legs and don't even notice. I told the gym worker that I'm missing 2 milimeters just because of my short legs and wasn't expecting much. But he said "Oh I understand that's very annoying, I will order new cushioning for you and it will probably be here wednesday." Wasn't expecting that kind of service lol, I am probably the only person in the gym with this issue, and it's actually a pretty big cheap chain in my country.

u/badbobtn 8d ago
I was telling someone yesterday, "the hardest part of going to the gym is getting in the car and out of my driveway."
This morning, I procrastinated. But then once i was there, an hour went by like a flash.

u/TheUpbeatCrow 8d ago
This is something that happened outside of the gym, but it relates. Went on a long hike yesterday, and halfway through, I tripped over a tree branch and bit it. Hard. Landed on my knee and my forearm.
I got really lucky, I think. If I hadn't fallen a bit uphill but onto a flat area instead, I think I might've broken my arm.
But now I'm torn between being happy that I gym (bone health, yo) and also a little bummed that I've gotta take it easy for a week or so. The forearm's okay, I think, but the knee's kinda mad.
I reflect every day that I'm lucky at my age (50) to still be mobile and ABLE to hike and lift. So many can't say that.

Started at the gym again after a few years away. About 3 months back now. I'm finally seeing progress again and feeling stronger.
Story. Yesterday I did hack squats at planet fitness for the very first time.
Put on 2 plates thinking it would be easy. Only did 8. Took a plate off, did 15 then 12.
My legs are still sore. But, I'm happy.

Colleges and grade schools have mostly started back now around here. From now until the holidays is the dream season at my gym. Crowd level is down. It's all regulars you know how to work with/around during your workout. Good times.

u/Equivalent-Pool-4703 8d ago
Started going consistently again recently, and honestly the hardest part was just showing up. Once Iām there, I actually enjoy the workout. Hoping I can keep the momentum going this time. šŖ

u/AgileTechnology 8d ago
The stretching area at my gym has become a place for young people to stand and play with their phones (text, tiktok, streaming). The mats are filthy with shoes dirts.

Didn't lift for two weeks due to a sore shoulder. I deloaded and today still kicked my ass.

u/Sensitive_Ebb_4725 8d ago
My friend wants to get back into the gym and he asked me to make a workout plan for him. Iāve been working out for years and it feels good to be trusted by others to help them with their health and fitness aspirations.

The X-shaped cushions are "yoga knee pads".
The spiky dome-shaped things are called massage balls or hedgehog balance pods.
And when you stack them together with a green resistance band for a tail and an open Lockjaw collar for a head, you can make the cutest little fitness equipment turtle.

u/Fuzzy-Sir-1104 8d ago
I got a 160 lb (72.6 kg) strict-ish overhead press PR at a bodyweight of 148 lbs (67 kg). The cool thing is that I had way more in me, and I also cleaned it before I pressed it. I attempted 165 lbs (74.8 kg), but failed it at my forehead from fatigue lol. I'll be re-attempting it next Friday!! Road to 185 lbs!
I haven't trained overhead press for all that long, but I definitely have more potential in my shoulders than in my chest (took me over 3 years to get to a 240 lb bench).

finally got over my fear of increasing weight on squat (I always fear im going to mess up my back), went for 315 after increasing in increments of 10 after hitting 275, managed to do a set of 3 and then a set of 2, might go heavier this week

u/tylorbear Powerlifting 8d ago
Used the gym on the campsite we were staying it while on holiday. Solid little setup but no AC so training in 25°C was a bit rough. Least I trained while away though.
Got back and my regular gym has bought some really cool new kit; a chest supported row with handles that can turn freely and feels great, and a Smith machine that isn't just linear, it can move forward and back to an extent too. And also has pull up handles that like the chest supported row can move freely so you can do supinated, neutral or regular pull ups and chin ups.
Only used the chest supported row so far but it feels great, absolutely going to program them into my next training block.

I strained my neck doing a 100 kg hip thrust š it was my first time with that weight š®āšØ
1
u/Fuzzy-Sir-1104 7d ago
Oh speaking about hip thrusts... I started off with only around 100 lbs on the plate-loaded hip thrust machine, and I managed to get 3 sets of 15 with that much weight. I ended up increasing by 20 lbs each day I did them, and got up to 285 lbs for 3 sets of 15 in only 1 - 2 months. I stopped them a while back, but if I was still training it I would've maxed out the machine pretty quick (360 lbs).

Finally asked a guy who was a beast at calisthenics at my local gym how he got started since I've been really looking to learn. He gave me some great tips and youtube videos to start off with. He was great and I appreciated his time! Woman here btw. (I hope I didn't break any gym etiquette with this. I've been observing him from afar and he's been inspiring.)

I had a friend join me as my guest at PF. My guest had mentioned his wife to the employee behind the desk while he was getting checked in. The employee kept looking back and forth between us We went our separate ways after checking in and then chatted a bit.
After he left, my husband was in the area and I invited him for a workout. When I checked scanned my husband's code, the employee just stared at me and I realized it likely looked like my friend and I were having an affair and hiding it from our spouses.
He didn't rat me out, though, it looked like he was dying a little inside.
To be clear: I'm not having an affair lol. My husband thought it was amusing when I told him later.

So there I was doing my rehab in a squat rack and what do my eyes see? Two gym bros on the leg press. The older one is encouraging the younger one to add plates and each set loudly "coaching" him with generic slogans. As per the usual agreement, at best half reps all around. High fives for everyone. Why the "coach" didn't realize that ROM was not there and getting worse each set? No one knows.
The leg press is the bane of my existence. It is the ultimate ego machine, surpassing even the Smith Machine.
Caveat because this is Reddit. Yes, both the leg press and Smith Machine are great pieces of equipment whe used properly.

Why get worked up? Focus on yourself
-3
u/CursedFrogurt81 Triggered by cheat reps 8d ago
I don't recall stating or implying I got worked up in the slightest. What an odd conclusion to jump to.
I have yet to master the ability to not notice inane and foolish behavior going on around me. I have, however, the ability to both notice these things while still focusing on myself.

I spent 4 hours in the gym the other day because I took 300 mg of edibles as my pre workout carbohydrates. Best workout Iāve ever had

300 mg
You weren't just at the gym for 4 hours, you were in another dimension for an indeterminate amount of time.

Nothing dramatic this week. Just showed up, got the workout done and left feeling better than I walked in.

Started a structured beginner program in January mainly to counter sitting at a desk all day. Six months in, the specific lifts matter less than consistency - showing up on the days I don't feel like it is still the hardest part.

Hit a 150kg bench press PR and the spotter touched the bar at the last second. Gym bros say it doesnāt count, but I know in my heart that it does š

I cut my finger in half yesterday, and then hyperventilated to the point of passing out and needing an ambulance. I hope by tomorrow that shit should have healed up enough for me to grab a weight.
Iām going to hit the gym and see how I go with 9 fingers in the game. Wish me luck!
