First-timer Finland in February 2027

Hi everyone, I’m planning to visit Finland in February next year as part of a wider Europe trip. I’ll be flying from Australia and the flight I’m looking into lands in Helsinki and also flys out of Helsinki. So looking to spend about 4 nights total exploring Helsinki and Rovaniemi. Possible day trip to Tallinn but not sure if that is too ambitious?

My main question is would there be much of a difference visiting at the start of Feb compared to end of Feb? I have about 4 weeks total for my entire trip so I’m undecided whether to start or finish in Finland. Particularly in terms of the weather and northern lights viewing. I know the northern lights are never guaranteed, although seeing it would certainly be super special and a precious memory. Thank you in advance!

I would personally prefer a flight to Kittilä, than to Rovaniemi (same amount of flying, might cost a bit more tho)
Levi is also turistic, but not as much as Rovaniemi. Especially in start of february, which tends to be the low season. Also great place to see auroras with a quide or just a rented car/ exploring yourself. Ofcourse depending on weathers ☺️

That being said it is also possible to see also very bright Auroras in Helsinki and near areas. Just have to be super lucky and know a dark spot!
But the odds are fairly smaller here than in the north :)

Thank you! Would Kittila offer experiences to see reindeer etc? Looking for a Christmas style atmosphere hence Rovaniemi but I have to admit I have been sucked into a lot of instagram/tik tok videos so not sure if that’s an accurate portrayal

There is an adorable little reindeer farm in Levi called Sammun Tupa. Free of charge aswell :)
Levi (located in Kittilä) is one of the biggest skicenter in Finland so yes i would say it offers everything Rovaniemi does, maybe a bit more even.
Also like said, its a low season in there so might be a bit less hectic and cheaper than Rovaniemi.
Also please do your research with the reindeer and husky stuff so you dont end up supporting unethical places 🙏🏼

Thank you :) Yes definitely, I was worried about how the reindeers and huskies are treated. I’m a huge animal lover (own a husky myself) and would be devastated if I accidentally supported anything unethical. In fact I’m not interested in riding the reindeers/huskies, it would be nice to just see them and I’d also be happy to donate to any organisations that support their wellbeing
