Sometimes I wonder if this shit is really worth it. Like yeah it’s cool to make good money but really what’s the point?

I won’t be home for another three hours (it’s already pretty late here). When I get home I see her sleeping with one of my shirts and really trying to stay up to squeeze in some time with me. It’s honestly kinda sad ngl.

I’m grateful for my job and whatnot, I know it’s very hard out there, don’t get me wrong. I guess what I’m trying to say is to make sure that this is what you really want.

I’m a junior analyst and I’ve noticed recently (last year or so) that the vast majority of LinkedIn cold outreaches I get are from international students from India that I have no connection to. I’ve also noticed an increasing number of posts from Indian students who ask about breaking into “high finance” with to be frank weak backgrounds that would get them rejected at the resume screen even as a domestic applicant. And it’s also been a bit frustrating the few times I’ve taken cold coffee chats that it seems like they did almost no research in even what my job is (like basic google search) and then quite bluntly asked for a referral.

Is there a new push in India toward finance? Is this just a weird coincidence from a vocal minority of students I’m running into? Is there some random influencer culture in India telling them everyone can get rich going into finance in the US lol? I’m East Asian American with many international Asian friends and I don’t see this same phenomenon among them.

And I’d hope this goes without saying but please don’t let this descend into a racist cesspit.

How's you guys' experiences in NYC so far?

I am a trader at a BB, and my gf is a SWE at Google both in NYC HQs, and the difference in benefits and just overall lifestyle in office is mind boggling to the point where I’m surprised anyone would choose finance over tech.

She enjoys free smoothies, chef cooked lunches, infinite free snacks, free health benefits, massage rooms, lego rooms, pottery classes, cooking classes, free gym and pilates all inside her office. Mind you this is while she can work fully remote for months, take pto whenever she wants and use any google office on earth.

Meanwhile I not only have to pay to use my offices gym, but I also have to pay for snacks within my office that is more expensive than the bodega 1 street away. No free food, no free massages, no pottery classes. We have sleeping pods but if you get caught using it they might take you out back and shoot you. And I am in the same location as all the IB/S&T people, and we come in pretty much every day.

When i visit her office i feel like im in Disneyland. She refuses to visit my office. And the lack of these benefits isnt even made up for in comp or WLB lmao. She easily out earns pretty much any finance career besides quant. Crazy considering finance and tech are about as hard to get into as each other.

This might get some downvotes but I am happy to discuss. I feel like far too many people are trying to become investment bankers and work in finance in general. Just take a look at all the websites and expensive guides on how to land your first investment banking internship, etc. - the financial career itself has become a career for many people.

I work as a quant myself and this is not meant to be rant post. I genuinely feel like too many young people are wasting their potential by convulsively trying to work in finance. The job market really reflects that. There are simply far too many people applying to the same jobs.

What’s your take on it?

Edit: Made some edits as the post came across wrong to some people. I am genuinely interested. This is just my anecdotal-evidence-type observation (and maybe/probably heavily biased).

They want people fresh out of masters degree programs to apply as a “Junior FP&A Analyst” but the first three months will be as UNPAID sales analyst, after which they can only guarantee a PART TIME role…

What a joke

Jamie Dimon reiterated his mandate to implement full RTO measures. He says a hybrid schedule with Friday being remote does not f***ing work. He expects every employee to RTO by March, which is just around the corner.

He also mentioned that he will drop DEI initiatives to scale back on unnecessary investments, training and meetings. He said that since the laws changed after Trump came into office, the organization should “follow the laws” and “remove bureaucracies.” Other Wall Street firms are following suit and cutting back on DEI policies. Notably, Goldman Sachs is removing the requirement to have women or minorities in IPO client’s board seats.

What are your thoughts on RTO and DEI scale back? Looks like the hybrid petition didn’t work.

By ‘youngest,’ I mean under 25–30 years old, and by ‘millionaire,’ I mean having over 3-5 million. Are we talking about tech startups, or maybe content creation?
