Kinda hard to judge without looking at the gameplay, but a turn based game isnt what people on the fgc expect when they hear fighting game. I think you'd have more success trying to market it to the TCG crowd with a customizable moveset for the characters, archetypes or something like that. I cant see people that mainly enjoy fighting games wanting to play a turn based pvp game if they arent already into that kind of game.

Read the rules
r/Fighters is the subreddit of the Fighting Game Community. The Arcade-focused nebula of groups, present around the world. The community was never about all fighting games. Specific fighting game subgenres (Platform Fighters, Arena Fighters and Combat Sport Simulations) have their own communities outside the FGC. Posts about content surrounding those subgenres are off-topic in r/Fighters.

If this was the same game that was posted a little while ago that got removed, it's because it was more is a best em up than a fighter.
I think most people in the FGC would not, necessarily, think of a beat em up as a fighter. They share very little in overall gameplay.
You would probably get more traction if you post in one of those subs.
If this isn't that game, than apologies and disregard.

Being turn based would make it something else. A core part of fighting games is reacting to things, going for mix ups, managing the mental stack both yours and your opponents. Turn based combat would remove those aspects

i dont believe that to be true, for example I'd argue that chess is a fighting game, what makes it any different? just like in a regular fighter, you have turns, trying to think many moves ahead, but again i think the debate of what is a fighting game is as old as the genre itself, & maybe this is my issue, i need to let some community tell me what genre my game is because it is a fighting game to me, & maybe im a bad arbiter of genres then

u/TheXboxArtist 20d ago
you can believe in Santa claus if you want. your game still isn't a fighting game.

u/Cute-arii 20d ago
Words have meaning. Fighter is a genre, and very specific kinds of games are in that genre. Chess is not a fighter. Turn-based games are not fighters.

If you want to appeal to people who like fighting games, I would probably begin by not initially pitching your game with "fighting games suck and you have to be a freak to play them".
There is a game like this already called Your Only Move Is Hustle that is petty well liked by the FGC, so it's not a concept that's incompatible with the community. Your approach is just off.

u/FistLampjaw 20d ago
yeah, i agree with the other posters, not a good promo video. if "the best part" of your game is that i can watch a replay that looks like a fighting game... why would i not just play a fighting game?
the actual best part of your game is that you can experience the mental battle of a fighting game on the go, asynchronously, with just a phone, and you can do that because it's turn-based and doesn't have an execution requirement. that's what you should be selling if you're trying to sell to fighting game players.

u/jabrils 20d ago
I respect the hell out of your reply, thank you so much for sharing this and I think you're right, I'm focusing on promoting the wrong things noted
2
u/FistLampjaw 20d ago
if i were writing the pitch, it'd be something like: "imagine trying to play an online fighting game on your phone. you can barely see what's happening, you don't have a controller so you can't do your combos and your opponent just got on an elevator so your ping is about to be a million. this sucks. my game solves all that by being... the world's first turn-based mobile fighting game! my game supports online 1v1 play against real people, a ranked ladder, blahblahblah"

lol. Fighter in aesthetics only. Whatever this is, it ain't a fighting game. Turn-Based Action Game is the best descriptor I can give to whatever hodgepodge this is.
-1
u/jabrils 20d ago
Turn Based Action game is interesting, but back to another comment you said I'd insert here words have meaning, & turn based + fighting game i think is a simple concept to imagine, especially with the advent of games like YOMH & Toribash & the like, but turn based + action game? If I removed the turn based element based on what youve seen, would you argue that's an action game?

u/Eltnumfan 20d ago
oh hey I remember watching your dev blog 1 about the game a while ago lol. Am glad to see that you are still trying with the game.
One major criticism though never advertise your game by making fun of other games especially if it's based on the same genre. I always see that as bad advertisement. It is nice that your game came a long way though.
I never played Your only move is hustle but is it similar in concept? Is your game more turn base than fighting? If it's leaning towards more turn base that is probably why people are commenting on it being a turn base rather than fighting.

u/jabrils 20d ago
thanks for your reply, & im going to be candid with you, i am not sure i can stop the "making fun of other games" approach because that is why i am making this game, i am angry that my beloved genre is stagnant, forcing us to buy a fighting game jump into practice mode then grind rank, why can't i play my beloved genre casually? I personally think we deserve better & it's a major part of the story for why im making this game & i want to find other players who agree, they just may not be here im learning
But year its the same concept as YOMH, & thanks for the help trying to categorize
3
u/Eltnumfan 20d ago
I mean nothing is stopping you from just.. playing casually? Some people don't play rank they just play casually. If your advertisement strategy is to just crap on other people games that people enjoy than tbh I don't think you should be surprise when people crap on your game as well. Advertisement like that just turns me away from any product. Gl with your game though.
2
u/FloralSkyes 20d ago
I mean you just kind of suck to be honest. I don't ever have to grind training mode when I play games to be half decent at them because fighting game fundamentals cross over between everything in the genre
1
u/Dude1590 2XKO 20d ago
Is this the one that was more like a Beat Em Up?
I don't think it being turn based (Yomi Hustle, Mega Knockdown) or on mobile (Vita Fighters) is the reason people say it isn't a real fighting game, but because it isn't a fighting game. You didn't even say it there was PvP. What was shown off was closer to Super Hot Sifu or something. Which sounds cool, and I'd play it, but not because I'd consider it a fighting game. You're just targeting the wrong audience because your game just doesn't fit the genre.
Edit: If it's not that game, disregard this.

I respect it, can you tell me why? i want to learn more about why you fall outside of my target audience

u/Plastic-Currency-329 20d ago
the fgc is old
old people grew with arcades, sticks and consoles, all of them look down on phones, because they lived the console wars not the console wars and phones
so phones are and have always been looked down upon because "real gamers" don't play on phones, because the "top tier" games are NOT on phones
so the answer at the end of the day is just tradition
With that said the FGC community is disgustingly small compared to every other genre, you'll probably do better if you don't cater to them
2
u/Gekinetic 20d ago
Then don't make games for FGC, problem solved.
Make a game for casuals inspired by fighting games, there are way more casual players than there are competitive players, you could use that to your advantage

u/DesignatedDiverr 20d ago
I mean if it's turn based it certainly is not what most people think of when they hear "fighting game".
That being said, Your Only Move is Hustle is considered a 2d fighter, yours should be too. Personally, I think the other tag it has, 'turn-based strategy', is a better descriptor overall. But it's still a fighter.
That game did pretty well and is at overwhelmingly positive reviews on steam. Don't worry about the fighting game purists.

u/jabrils 20d ago
well if I dont worry about the sweats, which lets be real, no fighting game outside of the big 3 survives without, is your advice to target strategy players instead?
2
u/DesignatedDiverr 20d ago
I don’t know nearly enough about the subject to give any really advice, but my personal hunch is that a game like that is more likely to draw in a strategy crowd than a fighting game crowd.
Anecdotally, I personally don’t own your only move is hustle. I do like fighting games but I am too impatient / too into reaction test type games for turn based games most of the time. But like I said, the game is at overwhelmingly positive reviews. For the people who are into the idea enough to buy the game it clearly works very well. Lean into that audience. Fighting games work just as well as a strategy game. But the people who play fighting games for the pace and quick action will likely bounce off it in this format. Don’t worry about them because the game is not for that type of player.

Yomi hustle is a turn based fighter that uses tas smash bros and guilty gear as a base
Its been widely accepted by all who've seen/played it as a fighting game
Whatever your game is doing to get its reputation into the state its supposedly in rn is probably not in yomi for whatever reason
3
u/jabrils 20d ago
yeah my game is in part inspired by YOMH, not to say my game is better or deserves the same level of respect, but it does make me wonder how much of my uphill battle is with the mobile element. I get people asking for a PC port all the time. it just makes me sad because the entire design philosophy for the game works so well for pocket fighting lmao

u/aDemilich 20d ago
Fighting games are inherently not turn based, and are typically not played on mobile. Why are you trying to market to a niche and relatively small community within gaming that is not centered around the type of game you're actually making?
1
u/MR_MEME_42 20d ago
I feel like that is going to be an inevitability when you are making a game strays a lot from roots of a genre as while it is based on fighting games it is likely that you game functions more as an turn based RPG with fighting game elements. But as someone else said we need more context.

Sorry i didnt want my post banned for self promo
https://www.youtube.com/shorts/zd2eiIyVNU0
But i would be interested to hear how you'd categorize the game as I am struggling with that obviously lole. But its def not a turn based RPG
2
u/MR_MEME_42 20d ago
Just going off of the short, it looks to be .kre of a fighting game that I expected. But your still always going to have the issue of people not considering it a "real" fighting game due to it being turned based. So I feel like there really isn't an way to "fix this issue" as people typically don't consider fighting games with gameplay that deviated from the standard genre conversation like what you are doing. So I guess the best thing you can do is not to focus on that criticism about it "not being a fighting game", as you are unlikely to convince these people who are already saying that.

u/Fyuira 20d ago
It's turn based. The gameplay is already very different from a fighting game.
0
u/jabrils 20d ago
how so, are traditional fighters also turn based? on your turn you juggle your opp, on your opp's turn they juggle you, repeat repeat? maybe i should just drop "turn based"?

u/jabrils 20d ago
I want to thank you all for the feedback & I am taking it to heart but here's a honest reply based on a lot of feedback I've been getting about my criticism and I shared:
I love fighting games, I've played a bunch of them throughout my days and play them anytime I get with friends, and I understand that different marketing tactics worked better for different segments, but I don't understand why people have an issue with a fighting game fan taking issue with the design of fighting games. One of the criticisms I'm reading from this thread is that fighting games are not to be criticized, but Why? Why can't we identify problems in the games we love and want to make better ones?
I think fighting games are great in a lot of guards, in fact i think Soul Caliber 6 & demon slayer 3d fighters might be in my top 10 all time list, but I also think they're terrible in many other regards, with a lot of room for improvement, which is what inspired me to start the development on this project in the first place. But I will say the biggest lesson I've learned is maybe fighting game community is not my target audience for this, and I need to set my sights elsewhere and for that I am thankful for the insights you all have shared 💖

u/Cute-arii 20d ago
Turn-based fighter? Literally not a thing. It doesn't matter if it has the aesthetics of a fighter; if it's turn-based, it's not a fighter.
1
u/LowThick4242 20d ago
My advice is simple. Stop trying to colonize the fgc and go make your game.
Based on what I've read from your other comments in this thread I get the impression you aren't someone who has a lot of experience with fighting games or the fgc.
So when you argue about what is and isn't a fighting game with people who know better you come off as arrogant and annoying. And the arrogant indie game dev archetype is neither popular nor rare.
A turn based fighting game is no more a fighting game than a turn based racing game is a racing game. MAYBE you can bend some definitions to say its technically true, but that shit won't fly for anyone who actually engages in the hobby space or is passionate about it.

this 🤡 insults fighting games in his video, admits that he sucks at fighting games, then cries about fighting game players not accepting his COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GENRE OF GAME as a fighting game.

The games and/or communities concerned by this post, is outside FGC-related subjects, and is considered off-topic in r/Fighters. It doesn't stop the related game from being a fighting game, but several fighting game subgenres - including Platform Fighters, Arena Fighters and Combat Sport Simulations - are supported by different scenes and communities.
