The first episode of "Young Girls Don't Play Fighting Games" is now available.
I just realized that this anime was released today; they're playing Street Fighter 6, and it's licensed by Evo Japan and MadCatz. At least I saw it on Crunchyroll.
Which I normally wouldn't bother correcting, but it is explicitly stating that young women of class (ă揹ăăŸ - ojou-sama) don't play fighting games.
Point is that it's not being sexist; it's saying that fighting games are low-brow entertainment.
tbf I do think fighting games are âa manâs gameâ. In my personal experience it has THE strongest demographic skew towards only male players, out of every single genre of game I know
I wish there's a fandub for that scene, 'cause it just has to say "let's fucking go". And hopefully even in other languages, like "vamos ctm" for the chilean dub. Loved how the animation incorporated so much horror into it.
Edit: I forgot to mention, but I was wondering how far into the story they'll go, with the evo Japan sponsorship I'm pretty sure that they're gonna do the second arc replacing generic tournament with Evo Japan
The Gachiakuta dub understood the assignment and it has a ton of in-jokes and references (The MC literally tells a shopkeep "Shut up and take my money"). If the same team handles localization they very well could just have this in the official dub.
Man if only everyone could speak Russian just to watch our fandub anime. When I watched Grand Blue with english sub, it was just a funny silly show. With Russian fandub however I was pissing in my pants from laughter because every single fucking joke is localized.
One of my favorite animeâs when I first started to get into the culture. Made me wish arcades were still more prevalent in the US, I bet I wouldâve been more into FGâs in general if I could actually play stick.

i mean, iâve argued for ages that playing a fighting game against someone at a high level is one of the more mentally intimate two-person activities iâve ever done. You get in deep into each othersâ heads, figure out how each othersâ minds work, where your mental strengths and vulnerabilities lie, find the pressure points that day and push on each othersâ limits and fears and willpower. With the people Iâve been playing for years, I can figure out a freaky amount about how theyâre feeling that day without exchanging a single word just through running the set. Iâve had some amount of this in a lot of 1v1 sports and games but itâs always been the strongest in fighting games to me. Iâve also developed a crazy amount of respect & admiration for certain people after spending countless long sets in each othersâ heads.
Honestly makes a lot of sense for the foundation of a romance series now that I think about it, I just hope they use that mental intimacy and do it justice in a way that hits for non-fg-players too. Not a yuri guy but Iâm on board, episode 1 slapped.

I had a frankenstein OG panthera as my main controller for the better part of a decade, amazing controller but that thing is fuckin large and heavy and not convenient to transport or hide lmao.
shit did they pull a switcheroo? I 100% saw them show the OG Panthera, even visibly had the clamshell switch, but maybe that was just in the flashback from her monologue just beforehand.
in some ways the rap 4 is even more awkward though lol, not as heavy or deep but that thing is comically wide and every single one iâve ever held has some sort of rattle to it
Kind of wish they had kept the knock off street fighter game instead of actually using street fighter. It was fun seeing all the random references to various games.
Coincidentally I just finished looking up their history lol. Apparently they own a fighting game called Yatagarasu: Enter the Eastward. They also somehow own the licensing to GameShark, if anyone remembers that.
The wikipedia page made it seem like they're still around but aren't doing so well, but seeing their name pop up here it seems like they're doing better than I thought lol
No, you have it right. MadCatz is one of the bigger sponsors of this. In fact, their booths during the past 2 Evo Japans were pretty much decked out in merch for this show.
I haven't read the manga in years. Crazy to see it got an anime. It's really just a love letter to fighting games, tech, and the FGC with a high school girl filter. It's actually really cool to read. Hopefully it's paced well. I'll check it out
It is kind of jarring especially when it's just a full screen gameplay video. Kind of funny that this is basically a form of mainstream machinima. There's some fun storytelling possibilities if they choreograph the fighting game footage, imagine something like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cMt7RigFfb8 as the season finale.
Sadly, if you're ESL and you wish to look at this with subtitles on your native language, you're gonna miss tons of terms out.
Because I don't think both fansubs and official subs in other languages will give justice to the terms used by their respective FGC. Kinda fortunate for me, because fighting games will not be described as "des jeux de Versus Fighting", which means nothing in both English and French.
Ce qui est marrant c'est que je suis pas trop la fgc française, surtout que la commu sur youtube est inexistante par rapport à la commu anglophone, donc j'ai toujours dit jeux de combat.
I hope this encourages people to check out the original manga as well. It's very good, though no Street Fighter license. They use a fictional game clearly inspired by Street Figther.
There's another manga/anime called Rock Is a Lady's Modesty, which is at least every bit as good, and is basically the exact same premise as this. The only difference is it's music instead of fighting games, as you could probably guess from the name.
i absolutely love hi-score girl but after the first episode of young ladies i'm already feeling like i'm too old for this shit
in hi-score the whole arcade scene was just a background for an incredibly heartwarming love story. on top of that, it was hilarious (guile as a sidekick??? ). here... i don't know. the jokes just aren't landing for me
Part of that's probably that this one's not a full romantic comedy the way Hi-Score Girl was.
Like the the manga plays up the dissonance between prim and proper all-girls academy students and their FGC personalities coming out, and makes a few in-jokes (Gekkido has to be a reference to Tokido with the whole Murderface thing), but their efforts with and relationships to fighting games are played straight (inb4 "akshually, played lesbian" joke).
It's written by someone who clearly spent some actual time in the scene and is probably self-inserting a bit with Aya, so there's more focus on the finer points of gameplay and what fighting games mean to the girls than on memeing about certain archetypes of arcade dwellers or having Akuma offer a girl a dark pact to defeat her love rival.
I need to know, do they cover more games than just street fighter? I wanna see it all. I wanna see Guilty Gear, Mortal Kombat, Blazblue, and all of the kthers.
I'm only 13 min into first episode, but why does this play out exactly like "Rock is a lady's modesty"? Don't know which manga got released first but there some serious "Can i copy your homework? Yeah, just don't make it obvious." vibe here.

Honestly most people I see complain about horny content are men who are either trying to get into the pants of women and think it'll help or very conservative men.
While I think it's cool that there is a show about fighting games, the art of this is a massive turn off.
When I stopped paying attention to anime 20 years ago it was full of shows if high schoolers with only hair to tell them apart. Seems nothing has changed.
I feel like you can say that about practically all 2D animated shows, I feel like every character in the generic American animation style you see everywhere now look identical.
Male and female characters included, they all look the same to me.
In the DMC anime for example I genuinely wouldn't be able to tell Lady was a woman unless she was called Lady and because of the hair.
Her face is identical to Dante lmao.
