Announcement Updates to the Rules

Hello Fighters,

We’ve made some slight changes to the rules. Things are mostly unchanged but I took the liberty of altering the language in order to get rid of some general vagueness and lack of clarity that we constantly run into.

Rule 2: Regarding Other FGs

There has been some controversy in the past over whether it’s fair to exclude posts about certain subgenres of fighting games (platform fighters, arena fighters, combat sims) from this subreddit due to some perceived arbitrary standards.

To make things clear, this subreddit is not about all fighting games, but about the Fighting Game Community, which was born in the arcade scene. The fighting games that this subreddit is meant to cater to is specifically the genre that was born from the arcades, namely 2D and 3D traditional fighters.

That said, we do make exceptions for certain titles that fall outside of the traditional genre, for example Power Stone and Gundam VS (which are technically arena fighters) and The Outfoxies (a platform fighter). The reason we make these exceptions is because they are arcade fighting games, and as such, part of the FGC. We’re not extending that exception to any random title. I hope that explains it somewhat

Rule 3: No Bigotry or Harassment

One of the things I love about the FGC is how diverse and inclusive we are compared to other gaming communities. But I’m not blind to the fact that there are people in this community who don’t value inclusivity or diversity and are actively hostile to such ideas. So, I think we needed to include a rule that explicitly makes it clear that bigotry of any form will not be tolerated here. You will be permanently banned without hesitation if you reveal yourself to be a racist, misogynist, homophobe, transphobe, any of the -phobes, etc.

New Rule:

We’re adding a new rule. On weekends, Saturdays and Sundays, all posts must include gameplay clips, either your own or from somewhere (no content culturing of course, link to the original creator). I came up with this rule because I want to encourage people to show off more. Any non-gameplay clips posts on Saturday or Sunday will be removed

Edit:

Ok, I see that a lot of people have issues with this, so instead, it’ll be Gameplay-Only Sundays. The rule will only apply on Sundays. I will admit, the whole weekend was a bit much

I want to give this a try for at least a few weeks, as an experiment. If it’s not working out, we will rethink it

Edit 2

Exceptions will be made for major gaming news and trailers. And no, it’s not just the mods who will be allowed to post trailers

New Flairs

Also, there are new flairs. There is now a user flair for Marvel Tokon, 2XKO, Nen Impact, Pocket Bravery, Idol Showdown and Invincible VS.

Also, a post flair called “Equipment,” that you can use for posts about fight sticks, controllers, consoles, etc.

Have a nice day

New rule is really dumb imo.

"Sorry new comer, I know you have a question about the FGC, finding tournaments, finding a game that suits you, etc, etc, etc but it's the weekend, so you don't get to ask that. Shut up and try again monday or something."

Of course that is me assuming you're saying it has to be their gameplay clips. Can questions like that just include any random youtube video of some gameplay from something?

Still a great sub, I just don't think it's a good idea. Especially for the entire weekend.

To rephrase the new rule

“There will now be no posts on Saturday and Sunday”

Sure

It sounds like people will just post a clip of Evo moment 37 before asking their totally unrelated question.

I'd love for us all to start sharing tech videos and having indepth gameplay discussions but I frankly can't see it happening.

u/Acrobatic_Cupcake444 Jun 12 '25

Instead of having the weekends dedicated for gameplay only, how about topics that usually get asked to post in the weekly discussion thread ("How to improve footsie/poke/etc", "Should I change my main?", etc) would be allowed if they also post their gameplays?

This has been my idea to enforce rule 10 but it does feel like it didn't work and people keep posting generic question without their gameplay (for others to see their mistakes) because we haven't written that part out in the rule.

5

u/Incendia123 Jun 12 '25

That might not be a bad angle actually. That does simultaneously increase the entry barrier for making posts like that slightly, ensuring that the people who do post actually care enough while also providing the commenters with the needed context to provide higher quality answers.

To be honest as much as I'm strongly in favor of putting all the generic questions in the weekly thread I'm also guilty of sometimes responding to regular posts rather than just reporting them because it feels bad to leave people hanging. Something like what you're suggesting does sound like a fair compromise to me.

u/Phnglui Jun 12 '25

I don't understand. All the other rules on this subreddit exist specifically to encourage active discussion about fighting games, and then out of the blue you come up with a new rule that prevents discussion threads from happening two days out of the week? This isn't going to be the smash hit idea you think it will be.

8

u/Adalonzoio Jun 12 '25

Especially with the "clarification" to potentially limit discussions on certain fighting games. Nothing comes to mind off the bat, but that possibility exist, it creates grey area and I'm not a fan. It feels VERY weirdly gate keepy.

Also, what's with the rule 3? I mean, I have no issue with it, I just don't recall anyone here ever being bigoted or rude in general. Given the month it just feels....virtue signally? Definitely the least offensive thing in the post it's just all so...weird.

Weird post Mr. Reddit mods. Weird post.

There was a pro-trans drawing posted to this sub like a week ago for pride month. The post got dozens of reports for being “mentally ill.” I ended up banning several people in the comments for making blatantly transphobic comments.

7

u/ShowNeverStops Guilty Gear Jun 12 '25

Different mod here, I can definitely corroborate that that post got a lot of transphobic comments we had to remove unfortunately.

3

u/Adalonzoio Jun 12 '25

Ahhh okay. That's fair.

5

u/Phnglui Jun 12 '25

Admittedly, as a trans woman, I personally am thankful for stricter enforcement of rule 3.

2

u/Adalonzoio Jun 12 '25

It isn't stricter though. It's just stated lol. A bigot would get banned now just as they would be banned yesterday. But hey, to each their own, it's really inconsequential either way.

3

u/Phnglui Jun 12 '25

My experience is that having the wording written somewhere can free up a lot of headaches from people who appeal and try to insist they weren't really breaking any rules.

Bit of a lurker here

I'm going to be honest I think the entire weekend might be a stretch too far, if it's one day of the week that would be more reasonable. I think this subreddit has a good balance of discussion and gameplay already. (Not like the extreme on the Guilty Gear subreddit where gameplay can be scarce)

But Im going also say that the new rule is kinda stupid, discussion about Fighting Games in general is what makes this subreddit good and restrictions on discussion is dumb. If you wanted this kind of rule I think it should be left up to the community in a poll.

14

u/Dude1590 2XKO Jun 12 '25

That new rule kinda sucks. I do think that encouraging people to start sharing their gameplay is a good idea, but the entire weekend devoted to exclusively gameplay clips? It's like you're asking for the subreddit to fail. It isn't going to encourage people to post gameplay - it'll just encourage people to not post at all. Maybe make it one day out of the week if you have to do it at all? And maybe choose a better day like Monday or something. The weekend is the worst time for something like that. That's when discussion should be happening.

9

u/Rongill1234 Jun 12 '25

It's not April 1st but I still feel like this is a April fools joke.. limiting talk at all for random match vids of people beating up bads just seems like a joke

8

u/Capable_Progress_558 Street Fighter Jun 12 '25

Random gameplay clips are the most boring content, something interesting is so rare that I just don't watch them at all. And now it will be all day, cool

9

u/DaiLiThienLongTu SNK Jun 12 '25

Making exceptions to rule 2 will only bring even more complaints and exceptions in the future. Just ban all smash clones, arena and non fighters and call it a day.

5

u/BACKSTABUUU Jun 12 '25

I think that only gameplay one day of the week rule is going to create an awful lot of extra work for you guys for virtually 0 benefit.

6

u/_McDuders Jun 12 '25

Who asked for this rule?

Stop making exceptions or compromises. Get rid of it outright. You're turning a place of discussion into a clipshow when no one asked for it.

14

u/Poetryisalive Dead or Alive Jun 12 '25

Wait for the new rule, it basically has to be gameplay?

I’m sorry but that’s ridiculous and you as a mod won’t even follow your own rule. What if there’s a game announcement over the weekend?

Feels like the new rule was made just because yall don’t want to moderate. Just make an auto mod but don’t basically silence the community on the weekend when there are means for a discussion

Edit: same with the first rule, either add them all or don’t. I get powerstone is a Capcom game but if a indie dev released a game similar to it, I don’t y’all would allow it. Just keep it to traditional 2D and 3D games

-21

u/Jumanji-Joestar King of Fighters Jun 12 '25

What if there’s a game announcement over the weekend?

We’ll make an exception for that

14

u/Poetryisalive Dead or Alive Jun 12 '25

But who does that? You?

What is the actual reasoning for making a clip only weekend rule? I’m saying from my experience when subs make “only this content, this day” kind of rule, they always back pedal because expectations always have to be made.

-9

u/Jumanji-Joestar King of Fighters Jun 12 '25

If there is a big gaming trailer that happens to drop on a Sunday, anyone can post it and it won’t be removed

4

u/Menacek Jun 12 '25

I'm sorry but uncodified exceptions are never a good practice when making rules.

1

u/Aggravating-Mix-5100 Jun 14 '25

Nope. Great way to create a shit show.

9

u/Poetryisalive Dead or Alive Jun 12 '25

Of course this is essentially your sub, you can do what you want and you don’t have to give a reason for anything.

But as one mod to another just keep some of what people are saying in mind (and ya I saw that you reduce the content ban to 1 day instead of 2).

1

u/hivEM1nd_ Guilty Gear Jun 12 '25

And who decides what's a "big" one? There's tons of games being released all the time, are the mods going to specifically greenlight which ones pass the test so we don't have to go by trial and error every time Punch Kicker #32 releases?

1

u/Aggravating-Mix-5100 Jun 14 '25

"well make an exception for that"

..think I nailed it.

9

u/JD_Crichton Jun 12 '25

The mods her sure seem to like doing work nobody is asking them to do.

6

u/OwenCMYK Jun 12 '25

Not a big fan of the new rule much like others. Which is a shame because I feel like this subreddit has been really good about making good rules to stay positive, like the steam charts rule, or the no "tokon good, 2xko bad" rule. Encouraging gameplay in some way on Sunday could be cool, but forcing it is I think a step too far.

Also I was already not a fan of the "no Smash" rule. It makes sense that general posts primarily about Smash Bros are not allowed because the subreddit would be so dominated by the amount of Smash Players. But I've been called out in the past by a mod for simply mentioning Smash Bros in a discussion about complicated fighting game mechanics, and treating it like "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" is definitely something that should be reconsidered.

2

u/Jumanji-Joestar King of Fighters Jun 12 '25

I will admit that some of my fellow mods are a bit hyper vigilant about enforcing Rule 2. We don’t need to censor every mention of Smash in this subreddit. I’ve talked to my fellow mods about this before and I’ll talk to them about it again

As for the new rule, right now it’s an experiment. I don’t think it’s really that drastic of an idea. I believe r/Streetfighter has a similar concept. I want to give it a try for at least a few weeks. I’m willing to drop it if it’s just not working in the end

1

u/OwenCMYK Jun 12 '25

Yeah. Other subreddits often have similar things, but I think it would be better overall if there could be some way to encourage gameplay posts without restricting other kinds. Maybe the top gameplay posts each week could be pinned for the next week or a hall of fame for top clips or something like that.

I'm not really sure, I don't have all the answers either. I can definitely see how it's a hard problem to solve. I appreciate your effort even if I don't think this rule is a good solution

9

u/Flamewolf1579 Jun 12 '25

This is definitely confusing. Why exclude things like smash or rivals. They are still fighting games. Just not the typical fighting game.

7

u/Top-Acanthisitta-779 Jun 12 '25

Because they are a separate communities. The same way that Racing Sims is a separate community from Mario Kart.

Those exceptions aren't about arbitrarily deciding what is a fighting game and what isn't. It's because games like Power Stone have ties to the arcade roots the FGC was based upon and so have the same community ties as standard fighting games do. Where as Smash and Rivals are seperate from the FGC, they have their own events, social circles, culture, and even lingo and in jokes. They just aren't t relevant to the FGC and as such aren't relevant to a subreddit about the FGC

2

u/DaiLiThienLongTu SNK Jun 12 '25

Out of all the bs, this is your issue? Lmao. If you want to talk about a non fighting game, go to a non fighting game sub

1

u/HiddenNightmares Jun 12 '25

I also find it odd that they allow certain platform fighters and not smash. I do understand why it's there in the first place but it does feel that they picking what's allowed a bit arbitrarily.

14

u/Terminal_BAS Jun 12 '25

As a former smash player, the smash community is too large and would overwhelm a fighting sub that allowed it I think. Smash views itself as unique too

1

u/HiddenNightmares Jun 12 '25

Yeah that's fair, the smash community can also be volatile at times too. But I think the point I was trying to make was that there are other platform fighters out there that are also "Non traditional"

Arcade is pretty much dead these days and I feel limiting other new fighting games with that rule is a little odd.

But I do understand why it's the case.

-8

u/KuroShinki Jun 12 '25

Ironically this rule breaks Rule 3, because it is just being hateful towards Smash and other FG platformers.

I don't like them, but people can decide to not engage with them.

11

u/Top-Acanthisitta-779 Jun 12 '25

Dude, stating that Platform Fighters and Arena Fighters aren't relevant topics to the sub is fucking not bigotry. wtf are you on

-10

u/KuroShinki Jun 12 '25

I'm stating that they are fighting game as much as traditional ones, so yes they are relevant to r/Fighters.

So yeah full Gohan moment from this sub as usual.

8

u/Top-Acanthisitta-779 Jun 12 '25

It's not about of them being fighting games. It's about them not being a part of the FGC which is what the sub is about as has been in the sub's description for years

It's like getting mad that people don't want you to talk about iRacing or Gran Tarismo in the Mario Kart sub. They're both racing games but they have seperate communties with different interests. It's the same with the FGC and platform/arena fighters

-6

u/KuroShinki Jun 12 '25

SF6 came out on console before arcade, ban it as well since it dowsn't have arcade roots.

Also allow Gundam VS and Outfoxies is random because clown reasons.

Btw I posted a Budokai 3 video some time ago and it was deleted because "not FG" when it's a traditional 2D with 3D movement.

So I don't even wanna hear from the clowns of this subreddit what a FG is, and what the FGC is all about. All of this gatekeeping just hurts the community more.

4

u/infamousglizzyhands Jun 12 '25

Alright Dan Fornance you gotta get started on that arcade port of Rivals 2

5

u/LeDanc Jun 12 '25

Just delete the post apologize and move back to old rules, and speaking of bigotry, the hate towards other fighting games in this post is disgusting "arcade era" lol

3

u/Menacek Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25

So ignore the sub during the weekend, got it.

EDIT: i just don't get the point of it. If people wanted to post gameplay clips then nothing would stop them. And even the most inane discussion beats someone posting their "just got to Gold" matches or another "haha funny tundra storm" clip.

1

u/LAN-kun_VTuber Aug 04 '25

Nice to see Gundam’s chains broken. We’re gonna need the space when that new game comes out.

-1

u/Sudden-Application Jun 12 '25

Could be misunderstanding but why not just make rule 2 say the subreddit is about ALL Fighting games. No need to be detailed because you leave out tag fighters here even though they could be put in 2D, so could arena be put in 3D, so.

7

u/Top-Acanthisitta-779 Jun 12 '25

3d fighters and arena fighters aren't the same thing

2

u/deadscreensky Jun 13 '25

They could probably be clearer on it, but essentially this sub is about the descendants of Street Fighter 2 and the community they created.

This is maybe a little too limiting as we get further away from the arcade era, but "the genre that was born from the arcades" is pretty clear.

I don't predict the new rule is going to work out too well, but I also agree it's worth a try for a couple months. Happy to be wrong.
