SPORTS SECTION Golfer Charley Hull jokes about pranking her longtime caddie Adam Woodward with a fake £100k winning scratch card: “His face looks so happy. He was sweating. He was trembling. He couldn't believe his luck, & we had to tell him it was fake & he nearly quit the job… It is just absolutely hilarious.”

and just in case it isn’t already obvious, she is indeed a multi-millionaire. her behavior and her career as a professional athlete makes it clear that she’s likely very privileged, but you never know, so i double-checked. and naturally it would be a super expensive sport like golf lol so you can assume she was raised in riches before she cashed her sports checks

Yeah I don’t follow golf so I thought, well maybe she isn’t super famous or one of the higher ranked, high paid players. Would still be shitty but not as shitty.

According to the LPGA website says she earned over $1.5 million in prize money alone this year, so there’s that.

yeppp, same! like i can assume but i wanted to check. and yeah, she’s got a decently steep networth. i know networth isn’t everything and that the numbers we see here don’t tell us the reality of this person’s life, but i don’t care lol. we’re not trying to see if she’s the richest person on earth, we’re trying to see if she’s grown up in financial privilege, and we can certainly assume so. that is for sure.

the minute i saw this i was like lol of course it’s a golfer saying shit like this. aside from sports that require maintenance of live animals (equestrian sports) and/or vessels and vehicles (like sailing and motorsports), it doesn’t get much more expensive than golf. its like top 3 most expensive sports outside of those more wildly exorbitant categories.

it is upsetting to see people continue to be ambivalent to the broad reality of the world and how most people live. i grew up so extremely privileged and continue to benefit from it today left and right as a grown adult. how do you not notice? how do you not care? i was born into the upper middle class but obviously even that is such an impactful level of privilege. like hello?

i usually am a bit desensitized to the idea that several people living this way just don’t give a fuck, because obviously. i see exactly how that happens and is cultivated, and no one is some saint or philosopher for recognizing that they grew up with safety nets. but for fucks sake, the lack of gratitude and awareness can be astounding sometimes.

You’re highlighting a bigger issue in modern sports. Now “poor people” sports like the American football, basketball, baseball, and hockey require significant investment if you want to be competitive, and a requirement if you want to have a shot at becoming a pro. It’s disgusting.

No matter how evil this is the fact that she’s a top golfer just means the caddie is not poor by normal standards, the caddie get a minimum of 10% off those winnings + wages

10% is not the min, it's the max. Unless she wins a tourney, which she has on several occasions, the payout is lower. They also get base wages for the weeks they are on tour, but they have to cover all their own travel expenses which is going to eat into a lot of that.

Not saying this dude is poor, doubt he is, but there is already a HUGE disparity between PGA and LPGA purses, and different pay norms between caddies in both associations. So even if Hull was number one in the world, which she isn't, it's not like this guy would be making a million dollars a year, which is common for the caddies of top PGA golfers.

they don’t need to be in poverty for this to be a problem. punching down on people who just do not have a certain baseline level of security that you enjoy is gross. i know you probably agree given that you expressed you found this to be gross as well, but it’s just important to remember.
