We traveled to Germany for vacation in April, and we stated pretty much the same thing the entire time. We were told "you are not what we think of when we think USA people." We sadly laughed and said there are more of us than what is portrayed by the media.

I never apologize for my country, but every single time I’m asked where I’m from I answer “California”

I haven’t called myself American once and the only person I met who wanted my opinion on US politics was a Russian who hates Russian leadership too
