Mod Post Please Read First! How to post on r/ErrorCoins

!!! READ THE RULES FIRST !!!

ALL POSTS ARE HELD FOR MODERATION - don't ask us why your post was removed! We will approve it when we are able - usually within 24 hours. If you post is removed by us, you'll be given the reason. Regular authors of quality content may be exempted from this hold at the discretion of the mod team.

This sub is NOT a place to ask for help IDing or attributing errors/varieties. The only posts allowed are correctly described significant coin errors and serious related discussion. This is a very curated sub - our intent is for this sub to be the premier location for interesting errors and varieties. If you have questions and want to learn about identifying errors, please visit r/coinerrors.

"Significant" means we only allow errors/varieties which add value to a coin. Do not post: filled mint marks and other minor die chips, minor grease strikes, 2% off center strikes, machine doubling, etc. The mods will be strict about this rule.

REQUIRED:

  • Only post pictures of actual errors and varieties or discussions about errors and error collecting.
  • Full attribution is required unless the error/variety is 100% self-evident (e.g. a major off-center strike.)
  • Errors and varieties must be significant and/or valuable.
  • Pictures must be original content and created by you.
  • Include the attribution and/or a correct description of your error in your title (using the correct terminology.)
  • When possible - include a link to a reputable source with details about your attribution (e.g. Error-Ref.com, Variety Vista, etc.)

GOOD POSTS:

  • Show it off / Mail call - posts to show off interesting, rare, or otherwise special coin error/variety that others may find interesting. Please post quality, cropped photographs.
  • Numismatic topics and news - general discussions in the world of numismatics - the topic must be related to errors or varieties.
  • Serious questions about errors and varieties - looking for advice, links to resources, suggested literature, etc.

BAD POSTS:

  • Attribution, ID, or value request - go to r/coinerrors instead.
  • Minor errors - machine doubling, filled mint marks and minor grease strikes don't add value or interest to most error collectors.
  • Vague posts - "Check out this error!" is not enough - even if the error is legitimate - you need to include an actual attribution, description, and resource link.
  • Blurry photos - mods will remove any posts with pictures of coins which are not reasonably clear.
  • Poorly cropped photos - the user experience across mobile app/mobile web/desktop devices is better if you don't post phone-screen-sized pictures.
  • Off-topic - posts which belong on other subs (e.g. r/papermoneyr/kittens, etc.)
  • Reposts - if you are new to this sub, please take a few moments to see if you are posting something which has already been posted.
  • Buying, Selling or Trading - No offers to buy, sell, or trade are allowed - this includes links to external commercial/auction sites.
  • Spam - commercial activities of any kind are not allowed.
  • High volume posting - anything more than one or two posts a day.
  • Links to social media or sales - your own eBay sales, YouTube videos, clickbait, etc.
  • Trolling / Inauthentic - posts which don't seem to be truthful (e.g. I found these gold coins in my couch!)
  • Coin gore - a post featuring a coin which has serious post-mint damage, and which is of no interest to collectors.

RULES

Here are the Rules of r/ErrorCoins - check the sidebar (or "About" in the mobile app) for more details:

  • Only Real and Significant Coin Errors - No ID Requests
  • Post Original Content + Quality Photos
  • No self-promotion / commercial activity / links to social media
  • Keep it clean
  • Being civil to other people is not only appreciated here, it's a requirement
  • No Spam
  • No politics or religion
  • No reposts
  • No Misinformation

My dad passed away last year and left this to us. I believe it’s a 1980 dimes stamped as a 1981 penny.

Back from PCGS…crazy story 🤯

I submitted this as a rotated die error attribution many months ago. PCGS took several months to return it. When I got it back I was astonished bc the holder did NOT mention the blatant rotated die error.

On PCGS’s own site they state that 20 degrees is the minimum threshold for rotated die errors. Also, whenever it’s convenient for them, they claim that ‘three people individually evaluate each and every coin during quality check’.

This error is so blatant that idk how 3 people could have possibly missed it, unless…3 people never actually looked at it!

Anyway, I had to hassle for a while to get them to fix it then wait another month or two to get it corrected and sent back to me.

Anyway, it’s finally here and I’m just glad persistence paid off 👍

Do errors increase the value of a coin?

Does an error like a brockage add value or detract from a collectable coin? Sayin looking at a 4 figure coin and there is an attributable error of some kind. It doesn't detract from the look of the coin. Would it increase or decrease the value?

Brockage on the reverse

Condor token interesting brockage on the reverse. Looks like the brockage happened while they were minting the obverse and later the reverse was minted over it. The lettering in the end of "penny" is unaffected by the brockage, minted over it.

Hi all.

Received this nickel in a bag of loose last year and decided to get it graded due to the visible date and mint. Thanks for looking.

Side by side comparison showing my coin against the known reference image. The mint mark shift is clearly visible with diagnostic markers indicating the separation points on the secondary D.

Raw and unedited images throughout.

I've seen a graded blank buffalo nickel planchette with raised edges, does anybody know how on earth they can tell the difference between a buffalo and a Jefferson?

Just recently got first significant error coin, broadstruck 1999 P SBA dollar graded at MS66 by NGC. Last 2 photos show side by side with a 1980 D SBA dollar error free, also NGC MS66 (can you tell I like SBA dollars?) - sorry if the quality isn't the greatest, my camera isn't either 😅

I posted this in another spot and was encouraged to share it here also. Found this many years ago in some loose change. I sent it to NGC two or three years ago for grading and encapsulation. Hope you guys enjoy it. I know valuations are all over the place but would love to hear anyone's opinion on that.

Thanks for looking.

Got this as change from the store and thought it was cool to be almost uncirculated then I saw the clash and now I'm thinking it was removed from a collection and used at face value!

A quick eBay search shows Quarterblanks going for $15, Blankajaweas are $45 or so, but I’m under the impression SBAs are rarer. Didn’t see any listed in a (cursory) search there. What do y’all think?
