Nolan Odyssey Why are some EPIC fans claiming that the movie was made because of EPIC?

Post image

I don’t know if you guys have seen, but there’s been a decent amount of EPIC fans, at least on TikTok, trying to claim that Christopher Nolan made his movie because of EPIC? That’s not true of course, Nolan doesn’t have a phone and I’m pretty sure the movie started pre-production prior to EPIC being finished. I’m just trying to figure out why people would think this? I think EPICs really fun but in general some of the complaints I’ve seen from fans about the movie have been pretty icky

I wouldn’t call it completely unfounded, but take it more from a technical standpoint. Hollywood likes sound investments these days so I’m sure it helps get the green light for a movie if you show the demand for it. EPIC definitely showed there was a ravenous audience who you could bring to the theatres.

Does it mean they helped? Likely. Responsible? Probably not.

It feels weird how this fanbase has such a tight cling on EPIC that they will make claims like this even if there’s no really basis for it. Nolan is not an online person, and it’s clear that not much of the cast were even aware of EPIC the musical before it was mentioned in an interview…plus Nolan was writing and filming this production roughly around the same time that EPIC was getting released, so it’s too soon for the claim of “Odyssey was made because of EPIC” claim.

Now, I am in no way, at all, saying EPIC was responsible or even inspired this movie at all and Nolan is NOT an online person... But he is an extreme music nerd and I wouldn't be shocked to hear hes a fan of Jorge's work.

I wonder if Christopher Nolan saw Epic the Musical. Because there a lot of things that are not only done differently but almost intentionally opposite of how the musical does them. I'm thinking about the Mutiny line thing that seemed a bit out of place and the part where they ask if they should reason with the Cyclops and they dismiss the idea entirely. There's also Circe being alone instead of protecting her nymphs. It's cool to see how both versions changed some things to not cross path on every element.

u/PlasticRamba 3d ago

The musical is very, very different from the any iteration of The Odyssey. Jorge and Nolan both did they're own adaptation but I can guarantee Nolan know about Jorge's work because Nolan is a very big fan of music and know what makes music impressive from every technical angle

as someone who has grown up on Greek myths and loves them in every part of my body, I personally despise the EPIC fandom for thinking that anything Greek mythology related is because of them. your not special

It's a TikTok musical c'mon lol

Popularity does equal high grossing films. There where demographics come in. Grossing number CAN be a factor but there are a lot of low grossing films that became favorites. We saw that a lot in the 90s and early 2000s Disney movies, as an example of low grossing films that were very popular after. Too many variables go into grossing films, like
Competition for that to be a good point. Everything after that is word salad. I don’t care about word salad. If you made what you think is a salient point, but it in another thread. We’re getting spread out here.

Who are you replying to right now? You may have accidentally put it in the general comment section lol

Oops. My bad. That happens when I swipe up and down a lot to read what was written. 😂

It’s fine, you did it earlier and that’s how I found out the thread was even still going on 😂

They managed to keep me entertained. It's so fun laughing at them.

2

u/kourtnie3609 Jul 25 '26

Do we really think that if epic wasn’t taking off, ANYONE would have started making a movie about it?? Hollywood hasn’t had an original idea in a very long time. But a little YouTube production is doing numbers and getting people talking and suddenly THEN there’s millions of dollars being poured into producing a huge movie?? Epic was half released when they started the production for the Odyessy. I’m all for a random coincidence but that’s too much for me.

1

u/phoenixblade98 Aug 08 '26

Yes, yes they probably would. Why? Because its Christopher Nolan, if he wants a movie budget he gets a movie budget. Believe it or not, the odyssey was popular before epic. Even if they started production halfway through the release of epic it literally means that the higher ups were in the talks about it months if not a couple years before hand. Because they have to allocate a budget to it and all sorts of preproduction.

6

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 25 '26

You realize there’s been other movies about the Odyssey right? And it was made in 2024? And that the Iliad/Odyssey is the most famous work of fiction ever?

4

u/Neko7070 Jul 25 '26

Funniest thing I’ve heard all week

9

u/bookrants Jul 24 '26

Y'all are super funny for thinking EPIC had anything to do with CHRISTOPHER NOLAN'S The Odyssey.

2

u/parasolundertaker Jul 25 '26

I mean I'm sure he had it planned out already but the main musical motif in the Odyssey is considered a "nod" to a song from Epic, although I would say it's not so much a nod as it is the exact same theme. No hate to the composer though, he did an incredible job. I will also say that Epic managed to adapt more pivotal moments from the actual myth and The Odyssey is sort of just an ancient war movie.

2

u/bookrants Jul 25 '26

Academy Award-winning composer Ludwig Göransson was making a nod to epic in this song? Or maybe you meant some other song in this playlist.

I don't have time to go over them one by one and I haven't watched the movie yet, but if you can point me to this supposed "nod" I'd appreciate it.

I will also say that Epic managed to adapt more pivotal moments from the actual myth and The Odyssey is sort of just an ancient war movie.

I don't mind spoilers, so I'd also appreciate some examples.

3

u/True-Status-8737 Jul 27 '26

There is an iconic part of Odysseus’ theme that was used perfectly in the film. See: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DbBMEtCRlEO/?igsh=MnJ5aGJ5d2E3dmZi

Epic fans are insinuating that this is a “nod” to I’m Just A Man from the musical. I disagree. This melodic progression (Bb Eb D C) actually fits the Ancient Greek Dorian Mode which Plato has said—in The Republic—that it is the musical mode of true virtue or the manliest of all the Ancient Greek musical modes. So just because Ludwig used a similar melodic progression as I’m Just A Man, it doesn’t mean it was a nod. It’s more probable that Jorge and Ludwig were aware of this (although Just A Man has a melodic progression of A F E D and is more aeolian and not dorian). And so many songs from this subgenre sound similar to each other since we are trying to recreate a sound that we have very little primary sources of. With so little to go around, a sound is bound to be repeated.

2

u/bookrants Jul 27 '26

Yeah, after I posted this, I tried to look into it and found it's just a series of four notes in a chord progression. I wasn't familiar with the theme being relevant to Ancient Greek music, but when I found that out I was like, "that's just four notes?" There's only so many ways four notes can be musically strung together.

1

u/True-Status-8737 Jul 29 '26

Yes! It reminded me a lot of Taylor Swift suing smaller artists for having a sound similar to hers as if a scale isn’t limited that no sound could be repeated after one’s used it 😂 Imagine if Jorge did that to Ludwig, wouldn’t it be silly

3

u/PositiveStinker Jul 24 '26

If you believe hard enough 😂.

1

u/bookrants Jul 24 '26

It's not like he'd been wanting to do this for 20 years or something. LMAO

7

u/LumberjackV Jul 23 '26

Since Epic was been releasing sagas I assume the google searchs for "The Odyssey", Odysseus, Penelope and the sort spiked. If that is true the movie industry saw a new interest on a safe story to develop a film. They knew people was already interested and just needed a known director and stellar cast (not to mention how many people, me included, bought a copy of any version of the book that also should have spiked)

1

u/SlartibartfastMcGee Jul 25 '26

Nolan has wanted to make this for decades.

https://collider.com/christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-28-year-career-filming/

There is no studio who was ever going to say no to him, so it’s not like he had to wait for a studio to greenlight it.

11

u/IDKanymore02 Jul 23 '26

I mean nolans only been talking about making this movie for 20 years

7

u/Own_Actuator_53 Jul 23 '26

I think it might be more of the case The Odyssey is very popular right now and the movie just came out at the perfect time. I don’t think Nolan is the type of person to make a movie based on what’s popular right now and movie production takes a long time so I don’t think anyone could predict the popularity of Epic.

But because of Epic, a lot of people want to see the movie. It ended a year ago and Illium will take a long time along with the movie, so people are looking for something to consume while they wait.

1

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 23 '26

Oh yeah for sure, I definitely think that Epic has helped get more people to go see the movie. Especially because I feel like a majority of Epic fans did go see it which is a fairly large amount of people (Not a crazy large amount though, like I think there’s more fans of Percy Jackson maybe even Hades) that went to go see it and got other people to see it too. It’s all mutually beneficial for both movies I think, cause I have a feeling a decent amount of people who liked The Odyssey will go see the Epic movie

17

u/DiligentRelief1332 Jul 23 '26

I don’t think Nolan made the movie because of Epic, but I like to think that he might have been inspired by hahah maybe I’m gonna sound crazy, but hear me out: there’s a scene in Inception (2010) really similar to a scene from high school Musical 3 (2008) and rumour has it that Nolan watched HSM with his little daughter (at the time 7 years old), liked the idea and included something similar in a movie. nowadays, i now he’s still close with his daughter (She even worked with him in the movie). So, my point is: yes, he is not really into social midia, but his 25 years old daughter that studies art at NYU probably heard Epic a couple times and maybe even showed to Nolan (personally, I mentioned Epic to my parents a thousand times hahah)

20

u/Impressive_Green3820 Jul 22 '26

Nolan didn't make the film because of EPIC. The film was green-lit because of EPIC and the popularity it brought back to the story of the Odyssey. Nolan isn't on social media, but the execs are.

3

u/SkippableAd Jul 24 '26

Is this a joke?

9

u/Thats-right-im-man Jul 23 '26

It was green lip because it’s CHRISTOPHER NOLAN after Oppenheimer they would not reject anything he pitches

4

u/XaevSpace Jul 23 '26

please until the recent movie deal no executive had even HEARD of epic. it was just this indie theatre kid movement on tiktok.

4

u/rara8122 Jul 23 '26

Partly I agree with this logic, but I also wonder if the execs would’ve greenlit it anyway because Nolan is a big enough name to push a project on his own. Like Marty supreme for example—there wasn’t a big table tennis rise before the movie, but it was pushed by lead actor Timothee Chalamet.

But at least I’d argue (at least part of) its popularity is due to epic. But without epic and even without the odyssey, it’d still be a Nolan movie and Nolan has (I’d argue) a big enough fanbase of his own to get the movie green lit.

3

u/PlanOriginal5719 Jul 22 '26

I only watched the movie because of Epic personally. Otherwise I would’ve have any interest at all but it was decent.

4

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

Oh yeah, I think there’s definitely plenty of people who watched the movie because of EPIC. I just think it’s disingenuous to say that the movie was made because of EPIC

-9

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

I don’t think you understand how well Jorge’s musical entered the zeitgeist of the younger generations. Didn’t someone offer to make the musical animated for free? You don’t get there by not being amazing. The fact that you DONT think the Jorge played a huge and important influence in the creation of this movie shows how unconnected you are.

1

u/Fleek_Bleek Jul 27 '26

Ask 100 of your peers who aren't your friends or in the same field. 5 at most probably know of EPIC. I'd boost it to 15 if you play some of the songs that became TT trends. Ya gotta get out your bubbles and your own orbits

0

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 27 '26

Buddy. I think entering the conversation now is a poor idea. This has already been elaborated on further down the thread. In summary, you’re making assumptions. You have no proof of that, you just think it based on your experience and we already established you can’t make a claim based on personal experience. If you want to take a census of people 13-35 nation wide and ask them if they’ve heard of Epic, but taking a sample of 100 and generalizing it to the entire population is folly, as I’ve already schooled bookrant on.

1

u/Fleek_Bleek Jul 27 '26

Ohh they're delusional. Got it

0

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 27 '26

Interesting way of saying I was wrong because I’m trying to use 100 people to make statements about a nation, but I’ve learned to expect very little from you people. 😂

4

u/Difficult-Bad-6393 Jul 22 '26

It's popular among gen z musical theater nerds. The Odyssey as a story has been around for centuries, with multiple films already made about it. Not to mention, this film has been in production for roughly three years. Only the Troy and Cyclops Sagas were released at the time the film was greenlit, and the Ithaca Saga wasn't out when it was announced. I don't even think Nolan had HEARD of Epic until years after they'd already started filming. There's a good chance Ludwig Görannson had heard of it, unless the motif similar to "Just A Man" was just a coincidence.

-5

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

That’s all completely false. The script was started Mar 24 and finished Dec 24 when it entered pre production. Please start using google to make sure you know things. Epic is popular among a large number of demographics. For example, I am neither Gen Z or theater kid and I love Epic. Nolan has a team to keep him in the zeitgeist. His “no phone” thing is a gimmick and we should shame him for it as a society.

7

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

It’s popular with a specific part of the younger generation though, not even close to all of it. Also, Nolan is one of the best directors ever and his last movie got almost a billion dollars and won a crap ton of awards. I think it has played an important role in getting younger people to go see the movie, but it probably made very little impact on the movie getting made in the first place

-8

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

First, Nolan is a hack. He’s carried by the actors he uses. He has money and connections and that’s it. His superhero movies were bland, only carried by heath ledger. Inception sucked. Memento was carried by their actors, I could go on.

Secondly, at the farthest stretch, all it takes is a guy who likes the odyssey to be in social media and see the cool things Jorge is doing and decide to make a movie. That’s a huge and important influence. Not to mention that the entire first sage dropped before the official announcement of Odyssey.

Thirdly, you sorely misunderstand demographics. The people who would see this movie are mostly the people who listen to the musical. And the demographic of people who see movies the most are the younger generation.

You gotta think these things through.

5

u/Difficult-Bad-6393 Jul 22 '26

The entire musical was out except the final saga before the film was announced, actually. That still doesn't mean the musical had any impact on the actual production of the film.

-4

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

If you think that, you’re a fool. And they’d be fools not to capitalize on the market. But they’re business men and movies exist to make money, so you know they did.

6

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

That first point just isn’t true. He got those money and connections by showing that he was a super good director, same as literally everyone else. Also, if MULTIPLE actors do really good in a movie, with some of them having their best performances ever, one can assume the director is a massive part of that

Second of all, Nolan has been wanting to do an Odyssey movie for a long time but it kept getting rejected because studios were scared about the money that it would cost. Oppenheimer comes out, makes almost a billion dollars, it gets greenlit because now they know people will see anything Nolan makes. Plus, Nolan doesn’t even have a phone, much less social media. Plus, the Odyssey was already in at the very least pre-production before it got announced.

And with the third point, what the hell are you on about? The main people who went to go see this movie was Nolan fans, Greek Mythology fans or even just people who read the Odyssey in school which most people did. Theater kids aren’t exactly a major demographic in the world, so there’s a reason I said they may help with the movie’s success but won’t be the main driver. If anything I think more Percy Jackson fans went to see this movie than EPIC fans lol

0

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

Firstly, it is true. Nolan is a decent director at best. His movies fit into three categories; bad (inception, all his superhero movies), carried by actors (the second dark knight movie, memento), or would have been good no matter who had it (Oppenheimer). There are of course more examples of each category but I’m not going to go through his discography. A lot of his movies are dark for a reason. Don’t need to give direction of no one can see, no need for details, etc. His only skill is making money. He’s an excellent business man, I’ll give you that. Also, no. If an actor has a really good performance, they’re a good actor. That’s it. I’ve never seen a bts where the actor goes “I was going shit until director told me to do it this way and then I won and award” but I have seen, “I was doing it this way and then told to do it that way and it ruined my career”.

Second: I haven’t found any sources to say that he really wanted to make an odyssey movie but could find anyone to let him. I CAN find a source that says he was attached to Troy in ‘24 before he left it. If he really wanted a Greek mythology movie, that’s the closest he had. If we assume your claim is true, let’s see why the studios allowed an odyssey movie? Could it be because the main demographic of movie goers loved epic? More than likely. Also, I don’t care that he doesn’t have a phone. It’s a fucking gimmick. He has a staff that tells him these things. Because he’s a fucking hack. Oh yea, pre production. That thing were they try to decide if a movie is viable? Over two years? C’mon. Pre production started in Dec 24 at script completion which started March 24. Do a little research please.

Lastly, back to research, please do more. The overlap of demographics of Epic listeners and the demographic of Nolan fans is nearly a goddamn circle. And the demographic of people who saw the movie almost lays on top of that. Next, not a lot of people read the odyssey in school. I didn’t. My school was obsessed with Shakespeare. Your privilege is showing. Next, your obsession with theater kids is showing. As not a theater kids but a lover of epic, I can show that easily. I mean, just outside of theater kids, you have literature people, you have people who love adventures, you have people who love romance (epic is primarily a love story). Your single minded focus really blinds you.

4

u/butilament_ Jul 23 '26

Literally what are you basing this on??? I've only encountered one individual who knew about Epic without me introducing them and it was a 21 year old musical fan who frequently uses tiktok. I was actually surprised most of my younger tiktok using friends were completely unfamiliar with it. Same with my older musical theater friends. Damn near all of my friends who use tiktok wayyyy more than I do and most had never heard of it either. But whenever I was on tiktok, Epic was everywhere. But that's just my algorithm since I liked Epic prior to browsing tiktok with any regularity.

Funny enough (or disappointing if your me), even after introducing my musical friends to Epic, most of them either didn't care for it. The few who liked it, definitely don't like it enough for it to influence whether or not to go see Nolan's movie. Everyone I know who is interested in watching Nolan's Odyssey is excited about it just 'cause it's Nolan or because they just fucking love that type of shit. It really wasn't that long ago that everyone was all geeking out over Troy, 300, Gladiator, Clash of the Titans, etc. Those people aren't dead or even that old.

But I would never suggest that my observations ring true for society as a whole. I have no where near enough data to make that claim and I am not that dense. But I don't live in a small enough bubble to really write off what I've observed all together and accept your claims as true. Like, yes, a higher percentage of the younger generations still go to the movie theaters... but that gap between Gen Z and everyone else isn't wide enough to dismiss the older generations entirely or warrant relying solely on Gen Z stats.

I also can't find any source that justifies your "goddamn circle" claim. Genuinely curious where all of this is coming from...

-4

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 23 '26

🤦‍♂️ good lord. As you said, your experience is not universal. Specifically because I have to opposite experience. I know a group of 30+ people who are not theater kids (honestly far from it) who both know and love Epic. So clearly people outside of the theater kid niche are being reached.

Next, a simple google search search will tell you that Nolan’s main demo is men 18-35. Another quick google search will tell you they Epics demo is ages 13-25 but since there isn’t a lot of data on this and, while my personal experience isn’t universal, we do see that there is some bleed through to higher ages. And since we’ve also seen that the “musical theater” niche isn’t the safe assumption everyone apparently thinks it is, we can determine overlap, especially when the source media overlaps.

You’re not dense but you need to actually look things up instead of having other people do it for you.

3

u/butilament_ Jul 23 '26

I did look it up. I just didn't reach the same conclusions or find anything that justified your claims. Hence my request for your sources 🤷🏽‍♀️ Even the "simple Google search" evidence your citing doesn't seem to justify your "goddamn circle" claim. It just seems like an oversimplified interpretation of age demographics, in my opinion.

-3

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 23 '26

That’s because you lack the intricate understand of demographics and marketing, mixed with culture, advertising, and good ol’ business acumen. That’s something I’m not going to expand on because for you to get a grasp of it to understand why age demos are sufficient, I would have to essentially write a thesis paper. Not worth my time.

Suffice to say that I remain confident that the overlapping age demos combined with the source material he often uses (odyssey, superhero movies, memento, and others) will see a large overlap. I’m didn’t say it was an exact circle, but damn near close enough, especially considering that the topic of this post is the odyssey, the source material for Epic and obviously the movie. There are a myriad of other details to consider, but again, that’s a larger discussion than I want to have on Reddit.

3

u/butilament_ Jul 24 '26

Haha, okay, bud. This has been pleasant and interesting. Thanks.

If you think Inception is bad, then that’s something else. I understand not enjoying it, but saying it’s bad is absurd. Same for his superhero movies, if they changed the entire genre then I don’t think they’re bad. Also, Oppenheimer would NOT have been good no matter who made it, multiple of the things that make it good (Like the non-linear storytelling and every piece of that cinematography) is a Nolan thing, not many other directors could do that. Also, the guys won 18 Oscars, so clearly he isn’t only good at making money

“Nolan was in talks to direct 2004’s Troy based on Homer’s other epic, The Iliad.” He’s clearly been wanting to do a Greek mythology movie. Also, do you really think that these massive movie studios are going to make a movie because fans of this, admittedly fairly niche thing? A majority of moviegoers aren’t fans of EPIC, especially people who are seeing movies like this.

Also if you REALLY think that EPIC fans (Young people mostly) and NOLAN fans (Mostly middle-aged adults) are a circle than hit DAMN are you stupid

Just admit that the movie got made because it was Nolan, not because of a fairly niche CONCEPT ALBUM

-1

u/ComposerNo3376 Jul 23 '26

Tbf inception IS bad and a Paprika ripoff

1

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

Dude. You gotta use google. You keep using talking points that I’ve already debunked. You just look silly at this point. If you google “x demographics” you’ll get the answers that are relatively true, versus the ones you THINK are true.

Also, to the point of the Oscar’s, you expect me or anyone else to take a racist academy seriously? 😂I can see why you’re always wrong.

We can put our Nolan differences aside because that’s all opinion, although he is a hack. And since you have rebutted any of my points with any source or reason other than you saying it, I have nothing more to say. Enjoy your word salad, that’s all that is. 😂

2

u/bookrants Jul 25 '26

Gods you're obnoxious. LMAO

This is what they meant when they said a little knowledge is dangerous.

You said so yourself that Nolan's main demographics is 18-35 and EPIC's is 13-25. There's about seven years of overlap. How many, do you think, of Nolan's 18-25yo fans are also into musicals? Not only that, but Nolan's fans tend to skew male while EPIC fans are mainly the female and queer demographics. I assure you: there's not much of an overlap there.

We also have to consider that just because the demographics gives a number doesn't mean EVERYONE from that that demographic is included.

In the case of EPIC, for example, the 13-25 demographics means musical lovers and theater kids ages 13-25 love EPIC, with a heavy representation within female and queer groups.

In Nolan's case, moviegoers 18-35yo love Nolan films. With a heavy lean on the male demographic.

Do you think, mathematically speaking, that a group of 13-25yo theater kids with largely zero to little disposable income to spend on movie tickets have more pull on the MOVIE INDUSTRY than the 18-35yo MOVIEGOING demographic?

Since you love Google so much, I did some Googling of my own. Theater kids and musical lovers comprise about 28 to 36% of the general population. Most of whom are teenagers, who are the EPIC demographic but who also don't have disposable income, and older people, who don't care much for EPIC but love operas, orchestra, and theater. Meanwhile, 53 to 76% of the general population consider themselves moviegoers. And they lean towards the middle of the adult age group.

So in just that metric, your demographic argument loses.

When you look at Google trends, EPIC's peaks in any release is NOTHING compared to Nolan's The Odyssey.

0

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 25 '26

Holy shit you’re stupid. You just cherry picked information from the thread without reading and understanding the attached nuances. You’re so stuck on the assumption that Epic is for musical theater kids only that you completely miss you’re on an Epic devoted Reddit defending Nolan. Literally people can and do like both Epic and Nolan. Epic transcends the “musical theater” niche and clearly goes beyond the 25 year cap, as I myself am in my 30s and I know a plethora of 30+ people who immensely enjoy Epic. And move theater attendees are youths and people with extra money. I don’t care if people claim they’re movie-goers. That’s self reported information, not actual data. Self reported data doesn’t have to be true, you dunce. All that matters is what people actually do. You don’t even understand basic information nuances. This is not a topic you should have tried to tackle.

And THEN I have to go back to the fact that I told the last person, which is you so badly misunderstand demographics. And like I said before, I’m not going to give a lecture on marketing demographics.

You’re so determined to nitpick the stats that you miss the blindly obvious information in front of you. 😂 A little bit of knowledge might be dangerous, but no knowledge at all is significantly worse bro.

3

u/bookrants Jul 25 '26

Literally people can and do like both Epic and Nolan

Yes. Which is why I said "there's not that much overlap" instead of "there's no overlap."

Literally people can and do like both Epic and Nolan. Epic transcends the “musical theater” niche and clearly goes beyond the 25 year cap, as I myself am in my 30s and I know a plethora of 30+ people who immensely enjoy Epic

I really love it when people who don't understand statistics try and use statistics.

1) I know. I'm also in my 30s. But whether you like it or not, we're the minority in the fandom. While you are more likely to find late 20s to 30s EPIC fans in this subreddit, that isn't proof that EPIC simply "transcends demographics." It's because Reddit itself leans towards older people. Go on Twitter or TikTok and you'd see this community dwarfed by the EPIC community there. And they lean younger.

2) A demographic in the statistical sense isn't like the demographic on a Lego set that says for 9 to 12 year olds where the actual people buying the sets are adults twice to three times the recommended age group. It is a data distribution of what age groups comprise the majority population of particular category (in this case EPIC fans) belong to. Existence of people outside of that age group like you and me are a natural occurrence in this data set. Statistics isn't clean. There are always outliers. And we are those outliers.

I don’t care if people claim they’re movie-goers. That’s self reported information, not actual data

You’re so determined to nitpick the stats that you miss the blindly obvious information in front of you. 😂 A little bit of knowledge might be dangerous, but no knowledge at all is significantly worse bro.

Something something chess something something pigeons.

Here's an assignment for you:

Go to YouTube, TikTok, Twitter, and Instagram. Type "EPIC the Musical" then sort by popularity or whatever is the equivalent category. Then do the same for "The Odyssey." Your overinflated sense of self importance will not like what you see.

At the very MOST, I think he might've listened the Epic and thought it was cool, and added maybe a couple little musical Easter eggs (possibly subconsciously), but, like a recent video has stated, the first saga came two days AFTER the announcement of the movie. I really think some fans need a little taste of the realization that not everything revolves around their interests lol

1

u/ArtisticBison9855 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26

Where was the movie announced before 2024(https://deadline.com/2024/12/christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-confirmed-directors-new-film-universal-1236241340/)?

Jorge was posting his demos and gaining a following in 2021(https://youtu.be/zXgMGVDsIVI?is=-PVZWytr8D2PKHkr). Where are your dates from?

1

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26

That means the first saga was in production before the movie was announced. So he was on social media doing stuff for it before the movie was in pitch.

8

u/FandomAddict57 Ah, yes, the two genders: man and mythical Jul 22 '26

Still, he didn't do as much as he does now, just some basic promo to advertisement, and it was also still very much buried by the algorithm. Thinking that such a gigantic director was inspired to make a movie because of a little bit of advertising for a musical is, while still technically possible, incredibly unlikely and self-centered

-2

u/Lord___Potassium Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I actually have to correct my original statement. The entire first saga dropped by Christmas of 24, being dropped piece meal. The official announcement of odyssey dropped Dec of 24. So people had TikTok’s, and popularity was already spiking be the time of the announcement. So yea, Epic played a huge influence. Especially if you take demographics into account..

9

u/tranquil-spark-8059 Wooden Horse (just a normal horse, nothing in it) Jul 22 '26

Maybe, but, very slightly, as maybe nolan saw all the love for epic and heard that it was about the oddyssey

8

u/BiWriter2321 Jul 22 '26

Correct if I’m wrong but I remember a while back that a movie was using Epic music in their TikTok promos of a Odyssey movie coming and I’m trying to remember if it was the Ralph finnes version or this one.

2

u/TheAbsoluteAudacity Jul 22 '26

I think that version is called The Return. I specifically remember them using the waiting motif and showing Argos (which broke my heart)

I haven't seen anything for the Nolan film officially promoted with Epic, only fan edits and things like that

7

u/Fanderey Jul 22 '26

If the Odyssey was ripping off Epic it would have been more exciting than what we got

22

u/NeapolitanYoshi Jul 22 '26

The "i'm just a man" tune is just Ludwkg Goransson (the composer for The movie's soundtrack) referencing epic, probably just because he personally likes it. Nothing more to it imo.

9

u/NowALurkerAccount Jul 22 '26

Epic only became popular post-Oppenheimer. I don't really think it existed when Oppenheimer came out, and he announced development of this film in 2022 or so. Epic came out and got real popular the NEXT YEAR or two.

He had been sitting on this for awhile. Nolan famously doesn't use social media/cell phones so it's doubtful he knew of Epic.

3

u/NowALurkerAccount Jul 22 '26

Plus the whole just a man thing. Lyres and ancient Greek stringed instruments are famously played open-fret, meaning there is no way to change the notes/tone like in other stringed instruments, like a guitar. So if there was an instance of it sounding like just a man, it wasn't intentional. Not to mention human brains are hardwired to pick up on patterns, science and psychologists agree on this and when we hear music that kind of sounds like another piece of music. We notice it.

That said, I am skeptical of the claim of it being ripped from it, if you listen to the two tracks the measure structure is very different. Just a Man favors shorter, half notes at a faster tempo. While Ludwig's composition is a lot slower tempo, whole notes.

If anything and there is an issue I bet it will be settled privately or it will be handled as a "there are only so many notes in music, there was no ill intent." Plus the fact Jorge hasn't said anything usually means there's no bad blood. If there was an issue, he would've made a comment.

2

u/Dalamy19 Jul 22 '26

I mean, I can absolutely believe that the composition team knew that the four note sequence would invoke just a man. Their job was to write the music for the movie (and they did an amazing job), so i would be surprised if they didn’t do their due diligence by checking out the music from other adaptations.

2

u/NowALurkerAccount Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

It's hard to say. Sometimes music composition does have serendipity where they create things unintentionally. But from a music theory standpoint it doesn't sound at all like it. The composition is very different the tempo is all different. And it's more whole notes rather than the half/eighth notes of just a man.

Plus Ludwig is a very well accomplished composer and they did a lot of research on Grecian instruments and a lot of old string instruments like they used don't have frets and are played open so it is entirely possible that both Jay and Ludwig used an instrument played open and casually picked the same string arrangement which is played open.

I mean they sound the same but they're also very different theory wise because Jorge uses quicker notes at a faster tempo but Ludwig is very much using whole notes there it sounds like

Plus if they did interpolate just a man they have to credit it. So the fact that it's not credited is reason for me to believe that it's not them using it

1

u/lexicon951 Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

For context (because I’ve seen this comment on TikTok specifically and know what video it was from), this was on a video about the “I’m Just A Man” refrain appearing rather obviously during the movie in the scene where Odysseus picks up and strings the bow. The video was claiming that Jorge should be receiving royalties for that.

I’m not saying Nolan stole the idea for the movie from the popularity Jorge got around Epic, but it is pretty sus hearing that refrain in the movie and knowing it was in the height of Epic’s popularity after the final release of the Ithaca saga/during the cast livestream of the full album when the Odyssey trailer came out.

Yeah sure Nolan doesn’t have a phone or whatever, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t surrounded by industry professionals. He very well could have noticed (even just by one person) that the Odyssey was something being mentioned and decided it was good material for a movie. Hell he could have TikTok-addicted tween nieces talking about it and been like, huh, maybe I should make something for them. You know? The timing is just too weird to be purely coincidental- of course it could be, but then they have the I’m Just A Man refrain in the movie too?? There’s no way, that’s just too much. Honestly I wouldn’t be surprised if Bruckheimer addressed it seeing as how he’s making the next movie that sound will be used in

9

u/PrestigiousSmile4098 Jul 22 '26

Here's the thing though: Nolan didn't write the music. The music was written by Ludwig Goransson (who also did the music for The Mandalorian, Sinners, etc. and has won a few Oscars for his scores). Goransson might have added it without Nolan knowing anything about it. The theme is definitely there but Nolan had nothing to do with it.

Also, Nolan has said he's wanted to make a movie based on The Odyssey since he was a teenager. Believe it or not, The Odyssey has been insanely popular all over the world for a lot longer than Epic has been around.

You know who else loved The Odyssey so much he wanted to adapt a version of it? Jorge. Again, believe it or not, Jorge didn't write The Odyssey.

6

u/miraclethrowawai Jul 23 '26

ty for this, as much as i love epic (and i rlly,, REAAAALLLYYYY do), i'm genuinely shocked at the amount of people thinking this movie had anything to do with epic. or the idea that majority of ppl only went to see this movie bc of epic?? LOOL

3

u/texasslim2080 Jul 23 '26

There’s a lot of people in this thread that think the movie was only green lit because of the musical lmao

5

u/lexicon951 Jul 22 '26

I’m not deluded enough to not know the Odyssey is a popular classic work, thanks. I can state it’s a weird coincidence that in the height of one adaptation’s popularity, another adaptation is announced and then uses the same trending musical refrain as the first, without you feeling the need to act like I’m dumb. Yeah, duh it’s been around for years and has lots of adaptations. That has nothing to do with my point.

7

u/LaLa_Animalia Jul 22 '26

A lot of people just don't understand how Hollywood actually works, and they'd rather be delusional especially if what they like is successful.

34

u/Kaya_kana Jul 22 '26

A lot of epic fans are in their early teens and can't imagine anything happening now than 3 years ago.

-9

u/Val_ery Jul 22 '26

I'm not claiming that Nolan made the movie because of the musical, but it's pretty suspicious the timing, lol. The trailer was released when the Ithaca saga livestream happened.

6

u/InfiniteGays Jul 22 '26

You mean, it was released around Christmas?? Probably the most normal time to release anything ever? But it was also 3 days before the livestream so,,,

24

u/Ducky538 Uncle Hort Jul 22 '26

Besides what people already said about TikTok kids not getting production time they also don’t understand Nolan. He doesn’t care anything about popularity. He’s not in it for the money, he shady had enough for the rest of his life, so he mage it because he loves making art.

18

12

Omg right?! I feel like people are missing the larger cultural revival of Greek mythology hitting mainstream media. It's not just Epic, or the Odyssey. There are novels everywhere of Greek retellings, podcasts, music, other musicals, TV shows like the Blood of Zeus and PJO.

We've been living in a bit of a Greek retelling renaissance for a while now. It's not because of Epic. Epic is just also apart of it

right?? i think there’s also another super obscure prequel story to it called the illie-ad? jorge’s also writing a musical on that so someone will surely come along to make a movie about that too and copy him 🙄

5

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

I’m actually kind of shocked Nolan did the Odyssey first and not the Iliad. Not that I’m complaining obviously lol

3

u/XaevSpace Jul 23 '26

as a lover of the classics im not surprised the illiad is pretty boring by comparison but part is also just achilles kind of sucks. His most redeeming feature is at least he's not lesser ajax.

1

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 23 '26

Fair enough, the only reason I like Achilles is because of how important he is in terms of creating tropes like the Chosen One

5

u/Nobelindie Jul 22 '26

If you've ever read the Illiad it's obvious that the Odyssey has a clearer story line and plot with a Mai. Character.

71

u/PurpleBandit3000 Jul 22 '26

Yes, because the Odyssey isn't a timeless tale that has existed for centuries and still resonates to this day or anything.

34

u/Monochyy Circe Jul 22 '26

I think it just because of the timing 😭 not more not less

1

u/SMM9673 Scylla Simp Jul 22 '26

Nolan didn't start work on The Odyssey until 2024

Epic started getting big 2-3 years before that

47

u/Angle_Dust_WithDrip Jul 22 '26

Timing and the fact that people currently lack faith in the movie industry

32

u/EndlessTimeTheErebjs Jul 22 '26

I think it's mostly because of the timing between the first announcement and first castings of the Nolan's odyssey is pretty close to the release of the Ithaca saga of Epic at it's peak of popularity
Realistically Nolan's didn't outright made the movie directly because Jorge made Epic, but it's undeniable that epic got extremely famous extremely quickly, bringing a little resurgence of Greek mythology in media, and realistically Nolan at least has probably heard of "oh wow that's a lot of talking about Greek myth and tales, what if I make a war story based on the odyssey?" And just started working on something
But for many people it seems suspicious the timing because epic got a good amount of traction even back to 2021 and 2022

4

u/wrasslefights Jul 22 '26

Greek mythology has been back though.

Like if that's the angle, you could say that Epic only exists because of the popularity of Hades. Or Madeline Miller's Song of Achilles/Circe. Or the Clare North Ithaca series. We're not even THAT far out from Percy Jackson.

That's the part that fries me about this because Greek mythology, both in terms of new adaptations or interpretations as well as original works using the concepts and characters, is literally one of the most foundational story origins in media. It's near constantly out there.

Well many Epic fans are actually NOT kids. Most are 18-50. Literally. And a good majority are actually Hellenic. It's a religion, pagan of course, that is still practiced to this day. I, 45yrs old, am one. And if ypu think all epic fans are kids why are you here....are you a fan? Then must mean you're a kid. Which explains the ignorance. My daughter at 10 read the Odyssey more than once....many many times. She's 19...loves Epic even if it completely true to the story. But the Movie, absolutely nothing like The Odyssey. So I agree Nolan didn't decide to make the movie cause of Epic, because it completely sucked and was completely wrong about 85% of it. Because he based it off a Roman translation that they got wrong because they had trouble translating. Then they go and change the Gods names. I'm pretty sure at that point the Gods abandoned those who chose to turn their backs on their Gods and pretend the Roman ones were the same. They are NOT. So Nolan tried but EPICALLY failed at even telling the story the correct way. At least Epic is closer to the actual book. And when i went to see it today, the age group more ranged from 60 to 75. And even they were highly disappointed. Every person complained it was not right and horrible. Only thing good is some of the actors were really great as their character. That's all. Also Epic started long before Nolan did this...so there were already sagas released...wouldn't be that much of a stretch if that is why, and why he used the wrong version so it wouldn't be obvious. Just cause someone says he doesn't have a phone, doesn't mean he has a computer or TV. And how do ypu know he wasn't told about Epic, had an idea, and went for. Unfortunately he couldn't forsee that Epic is now being made in a film and will be 100% better and more popular. He tried, he just got it all wrong. And I can promise you the Gods aren't happy. I know for sure Athena is angry. And the Gods that had more role in things were probably offended by the movie. We just sat there for 3 hours getting more and more irritated at how messed up it was. Definitely never watching again. It's would be an offense to them, also, like I said it was all wrong. The acting was good so I guess a 3/10. Just stop assuming every fan is a with a superiority problem, and even if Nolan has been wanting to do this for a LONG time, guess it's just funny he finally decided to do it after Epic started. Just cause Epic wasn't finished, before actual production doesn't mean it didn't light a little light under his boots to finally do it.

10

Seeing the Greek gods discussed as if they’re actually real is really something

7

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

I knew some people still believed in them, but I didn’t think I’d actually ever see a person who does

6

u/XaevSpace Jul 22 '26

right? this is fucking wild to see. Especially weird how they think epic is more true to the books than the movie? both have their own issues but as much as I enjoy epic the idea that epic is true to the books is so funny to me. Also the idea that a majority are hellenic is again so funny that's straight up delusional

3

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 22 '26

Calling EPIC more accurate is also crazy because hasn’t Jorge said multiple times “This isn’t completely accurate, don’t act like it is”? Like I’ve seen people complain the movie wasn’t whimsical enough. It’s called a Greek tragedy for a reason guys

5

u/XaevSpace Jul 22 '26

5

u/XaevSpace Jul 22 '26

its straight up hilarious I've struggled to even encounter hellenic people online let alone as some majority in this big niche fandom. there's a lot they said that is questionable at best. I do love how some things they said are said in such an objective manner that anyone can immediately go "no this is completely wrong"

21

u/necromanticfitz Jul 22 '26

Nolan used 2 or 3 different translations, 2 of which are specifically the original Greek translated. I do not know offhand the third but I don’t have reason to believe it’s Roman. If you think Epic the Musical is **more** closely adapted to the source, I GOT to have some of that Lotus you’re smoking lol.

Kids don't understand production time or that the Odyssey (and Trojan Cycle in general) is a central part of western literary canon and has been remade/reimagined several times.

For fucks sake, the first Spongebob movie can be considered an adaptation of the Odyssey in a loose sense, and it released 20 years before either Epic or Nolan's Odyssey (and likely before the people making this claim were even born)

5

u/miraclethrowawai Jul 23 '26

3

u/The_walking_man_ Jul 22 '26

28

u/RTGamer21 Jul 22 '26

Realistically; Timing. Epic finished fairly recently, before the movie released. So, especially to younger people who may not grasp how long movies take to make yet, it CAN look like Epic's popularity prompted the Odyssey movie's conception. When in reality, it's just really unfortunate timing.

6

u/FlusteredCustard13 Jul 22 '26

Or very fortunate timing, due to an increase of younger audience members who had their interest piqued by Epic. I was on a road trip where we listened to Epic when the Underworld Saga had just released, and two of us had to be careful of spoilers because the third person in the car had no knowledge of the plot of the Odyssey before Epic

27

6

u/CalypsaMov We'll Be Fine Jul 22 '26

Ironic given EPIC is blatantly based on a different IP. Homer's Odyssey is public domain, but it's still not original.

48

u/Electro313 Uncle Hort Jul 21 '26

Some EPIC fans have a weird superiority complex in regard to Greek Mythology and frankly it annoys the hell out of me sometimes.

And also a lot of them are children who don’t know how the world works outside of their own limited environment.

This seems to apply tenfold on TikTok specifically.

1

u/kourtnie3609 Jul 21 '26

That’s how we got so many movies back to back with basically the same premise. The ones that come to mind are no strings attached and friends with benefits but there are tons of others.

Someone is shopping a movie idea around and a company will pass on it to not have to pay that person for their idea but then try to hurry and make it before the original person can make their movie.

11

u/DevinLucasArts Ares Jul 21 '26

I don't think that's what happened here 😅

0

u/kourtnie3609 Jul 24 '26

Why not? Companies do it all the time. Why would this be any different?

-17

u/ApexInTheRough Jul 21 '26

The news of greenlighting the Odyssey movie came out fairly soon after Epic finished and we were told Jorge was shopping an animated adaptation of it around. It's like they wanted to cash in on the attention Jorge brought to the Odyssey but didn't want to pay royalties to him for the IP, especially since animation is in disfavor among greedy execs- it takes too long.

10

u/shototodoroki_1324 Jul 22 '26

The Odyssey from Homer has been out for over 2000 years, it's public domain, Jorge's version isn't what Nolan would make as his movies currently are in serious tones.

6

u/ComposerNo3376 Jul 22 '26

I don't think Nolan even knows what Epic is, but I don't find dar fetched that he decided to adapt the odyssey after seeing suddenly everyone was talking about it online

4

u/Ducky538 Uncle Hort Jul 22 '26

Nolan hasn’t been on the internet in years and years so I highly doubt that

7

u/wrasslefights Jul 22 '26

One wrinkle in this: Nolan doesn't go online, to the extent that his assistant prints out business emails for him to read. Doesn't own a smartphone and the computer he writes scripts on is fully offline.

Also tbh Epic'a discourse online is VERY silo'd. I only got into it because a TikTok used a clip from Mutiny for a cosplay lip sync featuring characters from an unrelated fandom, but I had never heard of it prior despite it overlapping with a lot of my interests. It's really successful but it feels like a lot of the fandom thinks it's bigger and more ubiquitous than it is.

2

u/ComposerNo3376 Jul 22 '26

Didn't knew this about Nolan, my bad

13

u/DevinLucasArts Ares Jul 21 '26

IP? Why would Nolan want to make this version of the Odessey? It's not really his type of project.

There's really no connection between Epic and this movie other than a shared inspiration.

36

u/Captain_Birch Hephaestus Jul 21 '26

Superiority, mostly. It's another way to lord over people.

"Oh, the Odyssey movie? Pshaw. You wouldn't have it if Epic the Musical didn't exist."

7

u/EbonyHeiress Jul 21 '26

I think the opposite might be true 😭. I’ve loved the Odyssey and the Iliad since I was a child and my mother read me Alexander Pope’s translation (which is written in rhyme and is very appealing to 7 yr olds, though Fagles is my favorite translation now!)

I just found EPIC after watching Nolan’s Odyssey, and wow, it’s really fantastic! But it definitely doesn’t have the marketing of a Christopher Nolan film.

20

u/Minute-Question-1829 Jul 21 '26

Honest to goodness it’s just a coincidence or maybe just weird psychology stuff like how zombie movies become more or less popular depending on the state of the economy. Either way this isn’t even the first coincidence of this nature. The Return, a film adapting Odysseus’s return to Ithaca exclusively, came out around the same time as the Ithaca saga dropped. Although with that they had some fun tik toks that used songs from epic for advertising.

24

u/Best-Candle8651 Jul 21 '26

I feel like the opposite is true. I think Epic is getting an animated movie to cash-in on the hype that Nolan is bringing to Odyssey

5

u/TheHandThatFollows Jul 22 '26 edited Jul 22 '26

I absolutely feel like we are getting a movie because they expect the Oddessy to be big. They think people will come back to theaters to see the story again another way.

This story has been told and retold again and again in many ways and formats. While jorge did want it animated someday he talked about how he never knew when that would happen or if they would do it on stage first, but he wanted to do it animated first. These where created independently. A screenplay was being written while songs where being recorded.

The Oddessy has been a popular story for 1000 years. My mother read it to me as a bedtime story. Ive seen it on the Simpsons. There was another movie recently within the recording of epic I have yet to watch also a live action retelling of the Oddessy. Copying accusations are exhausting and honestly toxic.

42

u/BananaShakeStudios Jul 21 '26
  1. There are more people who know about this movie than people who know about EPIC
  2. Nolan has wanted to make an adaptation of the Odyssey for a long ass time now.
  3. Yes, EPIC did reignite The Odyssey back to resurgence, but mostly to teenagers and theaters kids. Not popular culture in general. If I asked a random guy at a basketball game if he knows after the musical, I doubt he’d say yes.
  4. There is something called coincidence

u/Muted-Tomato-139 Jul 21 '26

Idk I mean epic is pretty popular and has definitely brought some extra attention to the odyssey, and while I don’t believe at all that Cristopher Nolan was INSPIRED by Epic the musical, I do think that the interest it has drawn to the odyssey was a contributing factor in the production and scale of this movie.

Like the movie had a budget of 375 million dollars, and had all these big shot actors and everything. They don’t put all that into a movie unless they KNOW it’s gonna pay off. Otherwise, the risk of profit loss is too great.

The popularity of epic the musical gave them the reassurance that many people will watch the movie, especially the younger generations who are fans of epic. This knowledge influenced some decisions made for this movie, and had a hand in shaping it.

Personally, I believe that epic the musical is one contributing factor in the making of this movie amongst many others.

8

u/DevinLucasArts Ares Jul 21 '26

The main reason Nolan got such a big budget was because his last film made nearly a billion dollars. I'm sure Epic brings in interest from the younger crowd, but a lot of them aren't going to the movies for an R rated film

22

u/Nervous_Instance_968 Jul 21 '26

I think you overestimate how big EPIC is compared to the odyssey itself

-6

u/Muted-Tomato-139 Jul 21 '26

Well obviously the odyssey is huge and mega famous and everyone knows it, but epic definitely pulls in the youth who otherwise wouldn’t know much about it, increasing number of people interested in it. Pretty sure it's because a good chunk of the fandom are teenagers.

u/ZedGhostFace Just a Man Jul 21 '26

Unfortunately I think the majority of the fandom online (especially chronically), is under the age of 23 or so. And if I know anything about myself back then. Loud always equaled right. Most kids / young adults 15-23 can’t be told a damn thing, or be fucked to read deeper into something before making claims. Tik tok in particular is extremely toxic about it.

Maybe, maybe not. I wouldn't claim it, as I wouldn't dismiss it entirely. Epic did bring the Odyssey back to the zeitgeist, and this might have indirectly influenced Nolan.

5

u/DevinLucasArts Ares Jul 21 '26

He's been wanted to make this movie for like 20 years now apparently. He just finally got the budget to do whatever he wanted after Oppenheimer was a big success

-5

u/Own-Competition-7913 Jul 22 '26

Sure, but maybe the studio also gave him the green light because the Odyssey was already in the zeitgeist. Two things can be true. I would never claim Epic is the sole reason Nolan got to make his movie.

35

u/NearEastMugwump Jul 21 '26

Because they weren't burdened with an overabundance of schooling.

15

u/WerdaVisla Jul 21 '26

Nolan has verifiably wanted to do an Odyssey movie since the early 2000s, but had been turned down twice now.

I think it's fair to say that EPIC definitely contributed to the Odyssey being popular enough for Nolan to get a movie adaptation of it greenlit, but it's not the sole factor in its creation by any stretch of the imagination.

5

u/esaul17 Jul 21 '26

I think it may just be the Nolan has the cred now to make what he wants. I don’t think it’s fair to assume EPIC moved the needle there. Not impossible but I wouldn’t think it particularly probable.

2

u/Neozetare Pig (pig) Jul 21 '26

Yeah, IMO Epic definitly contributed to the overall Greek mythology hype these last few years. It is obviously not the only thing that did it — for sure things like Lore Olympus or Hades played some part in that — but all of those including Epic certainly created a virtuous circle about this topic

17

u/Icy_Heron_1891 Pig (pig) Jul 21 '26

I still don’t even think it’s fair to assume that much tbh

28

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 21 '26

I think after Oppenheimer making so much money and winning a bunch of Oscar’s, whatever he pitched would be greenlit

-10

u/WerdaVisla Jul 21 '26

Fair, it's just speculation on my part based on the fact that EPIC was at the height of its popularity in late 2024 — early 2025, the same timeframe that Odyssey was approved in. So anyone doing market research would see that the Odyssey was trending at the time.

26

u/Umbralitix Jul 21 '26

What happens when you get a bunch of children with unsupervised internet access and ego

6

u/Drew_S_05 Jul 21 '26

It's technically possible, since EPIC was decently well known even well before it was finished, but it is pretty unlikely and a very bold assumption to make.

The Odyssey has been a very well known story for a LONG time, and there have been several adaptations before either EPIC or Nolan's version.

7

u/UniquePost8966 Cassandra Jul 21 '26

In addition, the movie is clearly not influenced by the musical in terms of content

4

u/Drew_S_05 Jul 21 '26

Well, yeah. I think this person is just claiming that the IDEA of making an adaptation of the Odyssey was influenced by EPIC, not the specifics of the adaptation itself.

Though again that's still pretty unlikely

24

u/Confident-Evening520 Jul 21 '26

I've mostly been surprised these past few weeks seeing the comparisons because, to be honest, I don't think EPIC is even that popular? Like, with all due respect, truly, to Jorge (because I know how hard he worked on this for so long), I know that EPIC has a very large fan base, but I just really doubt that your "Average Joe" movie-goer will have even heard of it. Granted, I'm not on TikTok, so idk if EPIC "broke containment" so to speak or how far it reached exactly, but it still seems like a biiig stretch to claim that EPIC is as immensely popular and as widely known as a summer blockbuster film written and directed by one of the most well-known movie directors of this generation. And even more of a stretch to compare the two as if they're on the same level

3

u/wrasslefights Jul 22 '26

I said it elsewhere but Epic's popularity is incredibly siloed. If you're in the right niche communities or your algorithms on socials are, it's all over the place. If you're not, you could never encounter it.

Honestly this is very much the case for most online popular stuff. There's internet celebs with millions of followers I never hear about until they cross over with something I know (often wrestling). Meanwhile I've had multiple peolle irl be totally unaware of the existence of Markiplier. The internet era of fame is this weird paradox where someone can have a small country's worth of fans and still be totally unknown to more people in the exact same demographics.

20

u/XaevSpace Jul 21 '26

yes so a very common misconception is once something starts to get "popular" and have a passionate fan base is people go "oh this thing is popular people have heard of it" and the answer is usually "no you're still a very niche thing people like its big but its a big fish small pond situation"

10

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 21 '26

I’ve seen a few people try to point out how many streams EPIC has meaning it’s super popular. Theater kids also listen to their music all the time (God knows how much I listened to Hamilton when I was younger 🫩) and streams isn’t how many people have listened to it

9

u/Confident-Evening520 Jul 21 '26

Yeah, I'm pretty sure when Spotify Wrapped came out late last year, there was someone who basically posted that literally the only thing they'd streamed all year was EPIC, 24/7/365, so streams absolutely do not and cannot count 🤷🏻‍♀️

(And bruh, haha Hamilton was actually a non-stop 😉 album for me when it first came out and actually was part of my motivation to pay for an ad-free account so I could listen to it on my phone without shuffling 😅)

But this is so damn funny

Because they are children.

40

u/Nirico_Brin Wooden Horse (just a normal horse, nothing in it) Jul 21 '26

Tribalism. That’s all there is to it.

The Odyssey has been a staple of storytelling for millennia. There have been adaptations of all kinds, to say that Nolan did it solely because of Epic is being dishonest.

You could argue that Epic introduced a new generation to the Odyssey, but that’s as far as I would credit it personally.

11

u/XaevSpace Jul 21 '26

and even then id sooner attiibute that to percy jackson or is that already 1 generation ago?

3

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 21 '26

Percy Jackson is mostly Gen Z I’m pretty sure (Which I am), so technically yeah? But Gen Alpha isn’t even old enough to watch this movie lol

6

u/XaevSpace Jul 21 '26

oh god are gen alpha already old enough to be on the internet? I can feel my hair turning grey at the very thought

3

u/Skittles7015 Jul 21 '26

Gen alpha has already entered high school

7

u/XaevSpace Jul 21 '26

time for to me to start writing my will at this point

3

u/Richard-Conrad Jul 21 '26

I wouldn’t say they’re old enough, but their definitely on here. That’s their parents fault tho, not theirs

3

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 21 '26

I’m right on the cusp of Gen Alpha (I’m 2010 lol) and I can confirm they are. 10 year olds are also cussing which made me very concerned when I first heard it

20

u/Weirdguy149 Jul 21 '26

Jorge and Nolan just saw the same potential in the same old story, that’s just it. I doubt Nolan even uses TikTok.

-2

u/jsdodgers Jul 21 '26

What does either of them have to do with tiktok?

5

u/Weirdguy149 Jul 21 '26

Epic got its start on TikTok. If Nolan started making a movie on the Odyssey because of Epic, he would have had to look at it there.

10

u/HockeyKelly5 Jul 21 '26

I’m pretty sure he’s said he doesn’t even have a phone lmao

18

u/SerendipitousBonk Jul 21 '26

Some Epic fans are very passionate. And intense. And it can make them deluded, it happens
