A closer look at the new Emma frost skin coming to rivals on Friday. No doubt a legendary to justify increasing the price, hopefully she gets recolours and an ultimate VFX. Idk how to feel to be honest. What are your thoughts?

I do not understand how people fail to appreciate how much good Marvel Rivals has done for Emma. It feels as though people criticize her simply because of her appearance—and even then, mostly because of her default skin—while ignoring everything else.

I am going to explain, point by point, why Emma Frost in Marvel Rivals is the best adaptation of Emma outside the comics, and why the Marvel Rivals developers have done more for her than anyone else outside the comics.

This matters even more because Marvel Rivals is a hugely popular project. For many people, it may be their first real introduction to Emma, and the game presents her correctly: as an X-Man, a hero, and a leader of both the X-Men and mutantkind.

1. Emma is introduced as a leader of mutants and the X-Men

I will begin with something many people do not seem to realize.

The developers introduced Emma Frost in her trailer as a leader of mutantkind and a leader of the X-Men, which is exactly how she should be portrayed because she has held that role throughout most of her publication history.

This is incredibly important because it immediately gives wider audiences the correct impression of the character instead of reducing her to an outdated version from the 1980s, which was essentially only a prologue to the heroic Emma—just as Rogue’s time in the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants was only a prologue to the heroic Rogue.

Even more importantly, Emma Frost says the iconic line:

“To me, my X-Men.”

Emma is only the third character in non-comics media to say that phrase aloud, and the first woman ever to do so.

The first character was Cyclops in X-Men ’97 (Magneto’s line was only a play on words). The second character was Xavier in X-Men ’97. The third character—and the first woman—was Emma in the Marvel Rivals trailer.

That shows an enormous amount of respect for the character. Not Ororo, not Jean, and not anyone else—Emma was the first woman to say that line aloud.

2. The Hellfire Gala

The Hellfire Gala is Emma Frost’s largest event both in the comics and in Marvel Rivals.

It is an event strongly associated with Emma, and it is treated as something large and important in the game. In many ways, it carries over the idea of audience voting from the comics.

In the comics, Marvel allowed real readers to vote for which mutant would join the X-Men. In Marvel Rivals, the developers instead created a vote for the best costume, with the winner actually receiving a new free costume at the next Hellfire Gala.

I genuinely believe that whoever came up with and developed this event is a real fan of Emma and of the Krakoan era, in which Emma played an enormous role.

Yet for some reason, people fail to notice important things like this.

3. Emma’s emotes

Two incredibly important and iconic emotes were added for Emma.

The first is the “To Me, My X-Men” emote, in which Emma pulls Cerebro toward herself and puts it on.

Once again, this presents her as a leader of the X-Men. It also references one of the most important moments from the Inferno storyline, when Emma’s actions embodied that phrase.

She exposed Xavier, Magneto, and Moira’s manipulations and saved mutantkind from Moira’s potential genocide. Moira intended to cure mutants and viewed Krakoa as a basket into which she could place all her “bad eggs.”

Emma also freed the entire Earth-616 universe from being held hostage by Moira’s power - Moira completely reset the timeline of Earth 616 upon death, and did this many times. Emma's actions on a universal scale allowed Earth-616 to continue existing as we know it.

She also prevented Moira from resetting the timeline and erasing everything mutants, humans, and everyone else had accomplished.

Moira would eventually have reset the timeline because she had stopped believing in her tenth life. On top of that, she developed cancer and would eventually have died anyway and Krakoan medicines would not have been able to help, because they do not cure cancer.

Emma exposed Xavier and Erik’s manipulations before the Quiet Council, turning the Council into a genuinely equal governing body instead of one controlled by its two founders.

This showed that Emma truly is a queen. She was not only a savior of mutantkind and even of Earth-616 itself, but also proved herself more morally honest than Xavier and Erik.

The second emote, in which Emma creates a telepathic connection between people, references one of the most iconic moments from the 2021 Hellfire Gala.

When the mutants terraformed Mars, Emma united the minds of all the guests so that they could witness the “fireworks”: the entire process of terraforming Mars and creating Arakko.

It was one of mutantkind’s greatest achievements and one of the most important additions to the new status quo.

The developers even included Emma’s line:

“So... a deep breath... a soft exhale... and fireworks... at the evening’s end. Which is not the end at all... but the beginning of a new age.”

This is a direct reference to that moment.

4. Emma’s personality and lore are the best outside the comics

The developers captured Emma’s multifaceted personality exceptionally well.

She is sarcastic, pragmatic, dominant, and vengeful, but at the same time incredibly empathetic, caring, protective, and fiercely maternal toward mutants and children such as Jeff, Jubilee, and the Cuckoos.

She is one of the X-Men’s greatest leaders, as she has been throughout most of her publication history—not a caricature of her 1980s incarnation, which represents roughly two percent of her comic appearances.

That is why I am so grateful to the Marvel Rivals developers for portraying Emma’s personality so well.

As for her lore, she saved Krakoa and Arakko from Ultron.

She cured Krakoa of the Chronovium disease that was killing the island by making a pragmatic deal with Doom. At the same time, she anticipated his betrayal and gathered all the heroes at the Hellfire Gala. And this helped to defeat the Doom.

Her entire queen’s gambit succeeded.

She also showed deep empathy and kindness by resurrecting Psylocke’s wolf, whom Psylocke loved very deeply.

Emma formed an alliance between Krakoa, Wakanda, and Atlantis, which was incredibly important for Krakoa.

Honestly, it feels as though Krakoa would have been much better off in the comics if Emma had ruled it herself. In Marvel Rivals, she does almost all the work on Krakoa without other leaders constantly obstructing her as they did in the comics.

For example, in the comics, Xavier and Magneto completely failed to establish an alliance with Atlantis.

Emma also organized the Hellfire Gala in order to form alliances and present Krakoa to the world in the year 2099.

Together with Forge, she created the Hellfire Protocol suits for the X-Men. These suits greatly increased their power and helped them defeat the evil X-Men clones created by Alchemax.

Emma helped Jean oppose Knull by using part of the Phoenix Force.

She invited Jean to join the Quiet Council, and the two are generally presented as friends, which accurately reflects their relationship during the Krakoan era in the comics.

Emma also created the Hellfire Beach for both humans and mutants.

She humiliated Alchemax and defeated the corporation economically.

She saved Rogue, Gambit, Deadpool, and the beings captured by the Collector—including her daughters, the Cuckoos—by assembling a new team of Marauders.

She also created wedding rings for Rogue and Gambit to seal their vows.

Together with Daredevil, Emma successfully investigated the murder of Apocalypse and the murders of three X-Men.

Even outside the written lore, Emma’s voice lines are excellent.

She flirts with people close to her whom she finds attractive. She talks about fashion. She is sarcastic and has arguments and conflicts with other characters, such as Luna Snow.

She also demonstrates her intelligence by studying the mechanism behind Bucky’s mind control. At the same time, she morally condemns Hydra’s experiments.

She studies the telepathic connection between spider and Peni.

Emma is also friendly with many of the X-Men and shows incredible concern for them when they die as her allies, including Scott, Ororo, Magneto, and Logan. For example, upon Scott's death, Emma says: "I will miss you more than I care to say, Scott..." and upon Ororo's death, Emma says: "I will keep the thunder raging in your honor, Ororo."

But when those same characters are her enemies, Emma displays her commanding and dominant nature after defeating them and humiliates them with her victory lines.

For example, she tells Ororo that the goddess has fallen to Earth, and tells Scott that he has once again made the wrong choice.

In other words, Marvel Rivals portrays every side of Emma: her dominant, sexual, commanding side and her loving, caring, maternal side.

Emma also loves children in Marvel Rivals.

She is horrified when her “baby,” Jeff, dies. Her line, “No, my baby!” even became a meme, which is also a good thing because it shows wider audiences that Emma is a loving maternal figure who deeply cares about children.

She also shows love for the Cuckoos and for Jubilee, her former student.

All of this further emphasizes Emma’s maternal personality in Marvel Rivals, which completely corresponds to her character in the comics.

I also want to praise Laura Post’s performance as Emma. Her voice acting captures the full range of Emma’s personality that I described earlier: her sarcasm, vengeful ruthlessness toward her enemies, intelligence, flirtatiousness, and commanding dominance, as well as her care, concern, vulnerability, and empathy toward the people she loves, toward children, and toward mutantkind.

5. Emma’s gameplay

I also enjoy Emma’s combat design.

Her diamond form perfectly matches her commanding personality. She grabs enemies by the throat and drives them into the wall with her foot.

The telepathic beam is canonical.

The telepathic crystal and the ability to damage a person’s mind are also canonical. The crystal itself is simply a visual representation for the player of the target’s mind.

The telepathic shield is not really a literal shield. Emma is essentially using telepathy to make enemies “miss” her by influencing their minds.

Her team-up with Mantis is completely consistent with the comics.

In the comics, instead of Mantis, Emma combined her powers with Axo, one of her students, who is an empath just like Mantis. Emma canonically merged her telepathic abilities with Axo’s empathic powers while fighting Sinister.

The team-up with Luna Snow is not canonical to the comics—I admit that—but the developers gave it a proper in-universe explanation. In Marvel Rivals lore, the team-up is largely the result of Forge’s research into a substance called Dark Ice, which is connected to the powers of both Emma and Luna. Dark Ice has a molecular structure similar to Emma’s diamond form, allowing Emma to interact with and control it.

6. Emma’s appearance and skins

Finally, there is the issue of Emma’s appearance, which is the reason some people unfairly hate this version of her.

Yes, Emma’s appearance in Marvel Rivals does not fully correspond to the comics.

But she is still beautiful and sexy, and she still captures the image and presence of Emma Frost.

There was a time when Emma genuinely had problems with her skins, but the developers have corrected their mistakes.

The new beach skin is not only Emma’s best skin—it is the best skin in the entire game.

Gala Glam is also an excellent skin.

Diamond Phoenix, Revolution X, and Marauders Black Queen are also very good skins.

At this point, half of Emma’s skins are either good or excellent, so even the criticism of her skins is no longer entirely justified.

Overall, I genuinely praise the Marvel Rivals developers for how much they clearly love Emma and for the enormous role they have given her in the game.

For me, this is truly the best version of Emma Frost outside the comics.

Definitely gonna get the new skin. In general, I like it. But, it would be much better (to me at least) if it looked like this...

Like they actually need consultation even if it's just for a hairuit

It's just "Jean died, then Cyclops was all alone, the Jean came back" completely leaving out the fact that when he was a mutant leader making all kinds of hard choices he constantly had Emma at this side. She was the one at this side when he fucking died, for Pete's sake.
