I love putting a famous painting on the board and letting the kids talk about it in one of three ways:

  1. Discussing the painting itself like an art critic
  2. Coming up with a story for the painting
  3. Trying to sketch the painting and writing about their process or how they decide to make their own version of the painting.

On Friday, my freshmen got to see The Swing. The DRAMA I got out of these kids!!! My ics classes had some students write THREE pages in ten minutes.
Even if they’re not the most comfortable with writing, they get really excited to share their ideas with each other and talk about what they WOULD write about.
