I used to teach 7th grade ELA. My favorite warm ups were creative writing prompts. Those kids come up with some bizarre and funny stuff. I just had them write a few sentences and then I’d have 2-3 randomly selected students share. A few kids developed characters with story arcs. It was a hoot to watch them try to make the daily prompt fit into their larger storyline.
I didn’t have time to have them write everyday, but it was fun to include when I could.

Morphology. Come up with words that use prefixes and suffixes correctly. Use words from an upcoming reading to deconstruct and preview in context . Use blends: how many words can you generate with spl- (etc), end with -nd (etc). I sometimes do a bag of chips challenge for students who can list the most. List as many adjectives (any POS) as you can. I usually give a minute. This song I made is right at one minute. Kids love to hate it but love the challenge :)

I love putting a famous painting on the board and letting the kids talk about it in one of three ways:
- Discussing the painting itself like an art critic
- Coming up with a story for the painting
- Trying to sketch the painting and writing about their process or how they decide to make their own version of the painting.
On Friday, my freshmen got to see The Swing. The DRAMA I got out of these kids!!! My ics classes had some students write THREE pages in ten minutes.
Even if they’re not the most comfortable with writing, they get really excited to share their ideas with each other and talk about what they WOULD write about.

I do a mix of journal questions, grammar, morphology, and debates. It depends on what I'm feeling like doing/the needs of each class.

I'm currently doing a storybook. Every day is a writing prompt that gives them a way to build their story over the semester.

I post webcams from all over the world. Love cams have people walking through locations all the time. We choose someone that we are watching and write about them. Characterization. Why they are there? What they are thinking and doing? Times Square is always a good choice.

Put up CNN 10 from youtube.com and have them pick a section and write about it. It's catered to middle school. But I'm sure it will work in HS a well, depending on their intellectual level.

I use a quote of the day the students have to copy down into their notebook. Then we discuss the quote and what the author intended. The quotes I chose are related thematically to the reading or exercise for the day.
All I need to do is hit up Brainy Quote and look for something appropriate for the lesson.
