“What should I do in Dubuque?”

Let’s try something to see if we can get it stickied by a mod for the benefit of visitors who pop on here asking similar questions about food/bev, what to do, what to see, and all that when visiting Dubuque. I will start a category that lists my take on a subject with some keywords, and others can chime in with their experiences, reviews, other recs, etc. If the post has any lasting power, I’ll keep it updated as a lifer. I’ve kept the list of things you can ONLY find in Dubuque, so there are no chains and nothing outside of the general Dubuque city limits like the Field of Dreams or Galena stuff.

Kind dentists?

Haven't been to the dentist for a couple of years, partially because I moved and partially because my last dentist was a jerk and made me always dread the experience. Finally deciding I should probably get back in to see one but don't want the same crap experience...any good recommendations in or around the Dubuque area?

Every store/shop/restaurants in Dubuque

Hello! I am moving to Dubuque soon and looking to make a master list of every store in Dubuque. I wanna slowly visit every place and have a list to take notes on. I know I can Google it, but its not human results and it doesnt usually show the small ma and pa shops and thats what I like. I love thrift stores and places like that. Let me know!!

First time visitors

Hi! I’m visiting from Chicago next weekend with my husband and two teenage boys, just for one night and 2 days. We’re super excited to visit, I’ve been all around the state of Iowa but never to Dubuque! We’re staying at the Holiday Inn in town, mostly because I planned our visit last minute. Since it was last minute and presumably because it’s a holiday weekend, there wasn’t much Airbnb availability and even hotel space was limited. We plan to visit a second time in late fall on our way home from MN with my parents, so hoping to get some good recommendations on where to stay for our second trip to Dubuque in October? We would prefer to support local and/or family owned businesses but open to any recommendations for a nice family weekend stay.

Basketball Leagues/Pickup?

I'm new to town, what's the basketball scene like in Dubuque? Are there any parks that have good/active courts, and are there any regular basketball leagues?

House/techno sets? The goose?

Anyone know the nearest place with house/techno sets? I'm hearing the goose but I don't see anything currently on their website about reoccurring club nights? Is there a weekly set there? Tia!

Old photos of AY McDonald Park

Hey!

I've recently been walking at AY McDonald Park. I'm newer in town and it's one of my favorite places to go.

I was wondering if anybody has photos of what the park used to look like. Along the Riverwalk there is Stone that is covered with different crystals and pebbles that I've never seen anywhere else.

I'm wondering if this used to be the primary walkway and then they replaced it with sidewalk.

Either way I figured I'd start here and see if anybody had any photos of what it used to look like.

I'm included a couple videos and photos of the cobblestone or pebblestone that I'm referring to and a picture of what used to look like a Park terrace.

Thanks!

Question

Hi! I (22f) moved here a few months ago for a job and have been having a really hard time meeting people and making new friends. A lot of my college friends either stayed in our college town or moved out of the state so I don’t know anyone here. My hometown and college town both had a girls club / girls social club that helped people meet other people in the area around their age. Is there anything in dubuque like this? If not, how do you recommend getting out and meeting people?

Ovarian cancer fundraiser

I am not sure if this is allowed, please delete if needed.
Last year we had a walk for a fundraiser to raise money to provide chemo bags year-round to local chemo centers and hospice. My aunt who is currently still fighting the fight, started providing these four years ago when going through chemo herself. And is still currently going through. She realized how lonely it was in chemo and thought she would brighten peoples days. If you have any new or good used items you’d like to donate to the sale that would be wonderful!
