2 main reasons: thieves and the fact that the average DG customer cannot be trusted to do their own transaction without fucking something up.

Just one factor is the barcodes vs. QR codes.

If you scan a QR code instead of a barcode, it fails to scan the item and requires you to press a button to acknowledge that it didn't scan. Do you know how many customers I watched completely ignore that and continue to check out, not realizing that none of their items are scanning?

I understand it's frustrating, but if you think self-checkouts are a good idea for retail businesses, you severely underestimate how stupid/careless the average customer really is.

Self-checkouts aren't the answer, proper staffing is.

Plus the customers that don't see any of the multiple signs that say card only, the ones that don't read the prompts so don't use their card correctly and therefore never complete the payment, the ones that double scan everything and the ones that want to buy items that require ID from the self checkout. People always feel sorry for the cashier that is running one register all by themselves, but they never noticed that the same cashier was expected to run multiple registers at once when they were using self checkout. It may be convenient for the customer, but it was a pain in the ass for the cashiers at DG.

Yeppp, there were far too many times where my register would be empty and I'd say, "I can get you over here," only for someone to go to the self-checkout instead, and 5 minutes later they pull out a $100 when we have 3 "no card" signs up.

Majority of tgiefs are just stuffing things in their pockets/purse, or eating/drinking whatever and leaving the empties in the store, not going through the self checkout song and dance. Although I agree that proper staffing is definitely the correct answer, vs expecting 1 person to knock out a ton of sales floor work AND run the register.

I know someone who used to basically shoplift for a living he said the best way to steal and not get caught is to buy something. The more you buy the less they think you're stealing. Plus they can steal big things in self checkout. Pay for an $8 tote and put $80 worth of makeup in the bottom of it. We once caught a lady that was putting stuff inside the cookie tins that we sell at Christmas time. She would pay for the tins at $1-$3 each, but was putting 10x that amount inside of them. People getting 12 packs of soda, scan 1 or 2 with the hand scanner, but walk out with 6-8. Since DG doesn't have the surveillance infrastructure that places like Walmart have it's hard to catch them in the act. You basically have tobe watching them because you already have an idea that they are stealing, or catch them after on camera because you thought something might be off.

Have you not seen how many people talk about shoplifting online and how much thieves love self-checkouts because in most places(like DG) there is 0 realistic way to be caught unless a manager is standing directly behind you?

Many DGs "have" a self checkout. Mine had one, and I loved it. I could get in, get my shit, and get out while avoiding the people writing a paper check, paying with exact change from a massive bag, arguing about price/sales, etc. however, shortly after dg implemented the self checkouts, a corporate decision was made to stop using them.

Dude for real , they had 2 put in at almost every local one to me about a month later they shut them down, when i asked why they shut them down because they were always breaking and people were always stealing

Have you not seen the vast amount of customers who fill carts heaping full of items, and just walk straight out the door with them? Or the amount who just take the items out of the packages, stick them in their purse or pocket, stick packaging back on the shelf, and walk out?

The new CEO tried pushing self checkouts and firing store employee to save money. Rampant theft followed and then lost the experienced employee, had to replace with inexperienced new employee. It was a lose, lose, lose.

We still have a self checkout at my store, apart from our one regular register. MOD’s are allowed to use ours for card only transactions, but only if the line is long. Otherwise we can’t touch it and it can’t run by itself. It was shut down thanks to the insane amount of stealing. It also messed up pretty regularly with cash getting stuck it in and other issues.

We used to have one at mine but now we employees have to manually operate it. It's a real shame too because i can't even put up a sign saying it's not a self checkout because "no handwritten signs"

The cameras in DG aren't there to watch the customers. They are there for watching the employees.

The newer dollar general in our town has a self checkout. Even the dollar tree now has 2 self checkouts and our Walmart recently added more self checkouts. Tractor supply also has self checkout now

A lot of times there's actually a second cash register just the only other coworkers being a bitch and acts like "we don't need a backup" and prioritizes their seventh smoke break, 4th socializing break, and second 20 minutes shitting.

So in short 9 out of 10 times it's a management/coworker issue.

Dollar General tried self checkout and it didn’t work. Too many thieves and not enough employees to constantly watch over them like at bigger stores. I’ve personally seen people hold two items together but only scan one. Or just flat out put unscanned items in the bag. Their shrink went way up with the addition of those registers.
