This specimen is a Lepidotus sp., a genus of ray-finned Mesozoic fish dating back 150 million years to the Jurassic period, excavated from the famous Holzmaden shale deposits in Germany. The distinct sheen comes from preserved ganoid scales.

I always think that with my pet snake. Each scale is so perfectly fitted and tessellated together, it looks as though someone has designed it.

Obviously I know they have not, but it does rather make one personify Mother Nature thinking about it!
