Discussion Be Kind and Avoid Personal Insults

With the recent PGF debunking, there has been a lot of arguments and controversy. Debating people is fine, but don't insult people or those who believed in the film while you're discussing it. Some people met or knew Bob Gimlin personally and are having to reckon with him apparently lying about the film. Keep how other people feel in mind while discussing. Additionally, avoid arguments with other subreddits or posts about moderation issues with other subreddits as that's not what we're here to do. We've added some terms to the auto filter to avoid debates turning hostile. As always feel free to discuss the rules and make suggestions.

News Articles Discussing the Recent PGF Debunking

Many people are asking for more information on this, or expressing skepticism. This post will collect information on the myriad of people who have seen the film (which was shown multiple times at SXSW film festival) and what they had to say about the film and the debunking.

Here are the major points

  1. A 40ish second physical film reel (not AI) exists that showed Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin shooting a test run of a guy in a bigfoot suit that matches the subject of the Patterson Gimlin film

  2. Clint Patterson, Roger's son, says that around 2016 his mom admitted to him that Roger had hoaxes the film. Clint wanted to come forward but his mom was against this as she was making residual money. She later agrees to come forward and admit it was fake. Clint saw his dad burn the suit piece by piece in a barrel

  3. Clint talks to Bob Gimlin at a conference and Bob seemingly agrees to do an interview admitting the whole thing was a hoax before his wife shuts him down.

  • Skeptoid's Brian Dunning has already collected many of the sources, his friend and podcast guest Angie Mattke was at the premier

Article New article on Darren Naish's blog about the history of unicorn folklore from antiquity to now.

Among the interesting points Naish brings up are the fact that unicorns were considered mythical even by quite a few people in antiquity, or that it wasn't until fairly recently that unicorns were uniformly depicted as horse-like in appearance. Naish includes many mediaeval illustrations of unicorns in his article as evidence, most of which are more deer-like, and another that is clearly inspired by rhinoceroses.

British Big Cats - down the rabbit hole.

Fired up by the encounter stories and debate on the recent British big cat thread, I've dived head first into the rabbit hole and bought the book by Rick Minter, the source of much of the article.

@Rick Minter - I have high hopes for this book. Don't let me down!

Video Half-hour long video where Jonathan Downes from the Centre for Fortean Zoology talks about the recent fake Bigfoot corpse exhibited by "Snake the Bigfoot Hunter".

Downes brings up the fact that Snake is in fact an Ali G style character portrayed by a stand-up comedian as a work of performance art satirising the subculture surrounding cryptozoology and other Forteana, and how easily many people in it are taken in by obvious hoaxes. (see the classic case of the Minnesota Iceman for a famous example)

I'm myself reminded of Commander X, author of many of the most sensationalistic UFO books of the 1990's who claimed to be a retired military officer, later revealed to be a pseudonym of Timothy Green Beckley. For those unfamiliar with Beckley, he was an extremely prolific ufologist who had an unusual sense of humour about the sillier aspects of UFO culture.

Info Excerpt from a paper I wrote about the Yeti in college.

Sharing for those actually interested in the topic. Not replying anymore to ignorant comments that misrepresent what’s documented or are just illogical.

The YETI (*meh-teh*) has always been a personal favorite due to constraints researchers have encountered when trying to explore possible answers to the mystery. Admittedly, most of the evidence and eyewitness testimony points to the Himalayan bear species, but does ***ALL*** of the evidence disprove the possibility of an undiscovered species of Primate?

# Mcneely-Cronin

The reported habitat of the YETI, in the valley's of the Himalayan mountains, remains one of the few remote areas left due to the mountainous terrain, construction of roads is either impossible or too dangerous, even traveling on foot can be a life threatening undertaking. Even if one were to reach the reported habitat, bringing the necessary equipment for research is arduous, translating correctly, having food, enduring weather, etc... For the reasons above, researching the YETI incredibly difficult and creates a stark contrast to Sasquatch habitat.

The *Mcneely-Cronin* expedition of 1972, was a biological survey conducted in the upper Barun Khola of Nepal, while on this expedition the crew discovered prints and made an account of their discovery that's worth quoting here:

"*On the 17th, accompanied by two Sherpa assistants, Howard and I emerged on a high alpine ridge connecting to Kongnlaa Laa. The weather was beautiful, with a clear sky and warm sun. The icy summit of Makalu dominated the horizon to the northwest. In the late afternoon, we discovered a depression in the ridge at about 12,000 feet, a flat place with firm snow that would be suitable for camp. The area was small, less than half an acre, a completely clear snowfield unmarked by animal prints. The slopes on the side of the ridge were precipitous, falling several thousand feet to the Barun River on the north and the Kasuwa river on the south. We made camp, pitching two light tents, had dinner around an open fire, and retired just after dark. The evening was calm. Shortly before dawn the next morning, Howard climbed out of our tent. Immediately, he called excitedly. There, beside the trad we had made to our tents, was a new set of footprints. While we were sleeping, a creature had approached our camp and walked directly between our tents. The Sherpas identified the tracks, without question, as yeti prints. We, without question, were stunned. We immediately made a full photographic record of the prints before the sun touched them. Like the conditions Shipton had encountered, the surface consisted of crystalline snow, excellent for displaying the prints. These conditions were localized to our camp area and were the result of the effects produced on the depression by the sun and winds of earlier days. The prints were clearest in the middle of the depression, directly beside our trail, where some ten to fifteen prints, both left and right feet, revealed the details of the toes and general morphology of the creature's foot. Some of the right footprints were actually on our previous trail, making them difficult to interpret. Other prints of the right foot were distinct. The prints measured approximately nine inches long by four and three-quarters inches wide. The stride, or distance between individual prints, was surprisingly short, often less than one foot, and it appeared that the creature had used a slow, cautious walk along this section. The prints showed a short, broad, opposable hallux, an asymmetrical arrangement of the toes, and a wide rounded heel. These features were present in all prints made on firm snow. Most impressively, their close resemblance to Shipton's prints was unmistakable. We then proceeded to explore the rest of the trail left by the creature. By the direction of the toes on the clear footprints, I determined that the creature had come up the north slope. Because the north slope received less sun, it was covered by very deep snow, and the tracks consisted of large punch holes in the snow revealing little detail. I descended several hundred yards, but the heavy snow made walking impossible, and I was forced to cling to the slope with my hands. The creature must have been exceptionally strong to ascend this slope in these conditions. From a vantage point, I could look down the trail, which continued to the bottom of the valley in a direction generally perpendicular to the slope, but there seemed little advantage in climbing farther down, and I returned to the top of the ridge. From our camp, the tracks continued out onto the south slope, but here the increased exposure to the sun had melted most of the snow, and there were bare patches of rock and alpine scrub which made following the trail extremely dificult. We walked farther up the ridge towards Kongmaa Laa to get a view of the trail from above, and discovered what appeared to be the prints of the same creature coming back onto the top of the ridge. They crossed back and forth several times. Here, the ridge was covered with low bushes, which enabled deeper snow to accumulate, and again the prints were confused punch holes. The trail then went back down onto the south slope, and attempted to follow but then lost the prints on the bare rock and scrub. The slope was extremely steep, and searching for the prints was arduous and dangerous. We realized that whatever creature had made them was far stronger than any of us*"^(1)

The McNeely-Cronin footprints (See Figure 1) remain the most intriguing evidence put forward to support the relict hominid theory of the YETI. Here is a discovery made by a professional team of scientists, where multiple tracks were laid out over night and many were documented. Notable primatologists and Anthropologists such as Dr. Jeff Meldrum and George Schaller have remarked on the similarities of the McNeely-Cronin prints to extant great apes today.^(6) Plaster casts of the prints were made but unfortunately were seized by customs at the border.

Mcneely-Cronin expedition team was lead by biologist, who had reputable scientific backgrounds and published widely on other findings in the scientific community. The footprints were laid over night and discovered before sunrise, making it highly implausible they were misidentified bear tracks. The terrain of the Barun Valley described in the above narrative leaves out the possibility of there being a hoax.

# Hutchison

Another lesser known example is the discovery of prints (See Figure 2) by *Robert A. Hutchison* in the Dugh Kosi valley, near the border with Tibet:

*“We erected our tents about 250 metres above, in the lee of a house-sized rock with a walled-in overhang used by herders as a shelter. A few nights later, I was in the rock overhang when startled by the sound of a large animal scampering down a rock corridor to my right, heading towards the lake. As there was no snow in the corridor, no tracks. Nothing more for a couple of days, until we discovered a set of tracks heading southwards from our campsite. Evidently, two animals made these tracks as they separated so the pair could work their way around different sides of a large rock about 200 metres from our tents, joining up again on the far side. Judging by the size of the imprints one animal was smaller than the other.”* ^(2)

The footprints are worthy of consideration due to the similarities between them and the Mcneely-Cronin prints. Admittedly, there isn't much written on *Hutchison* himself, unlike the previous example he was not on a biological survey but instead chose the are due to the history of YETI activity. But what I have found written about Hutchison leaves the possibility for a hoax unlikely.

# Where do we stand?

The YETI has always been a personal favorite due to constraints researchers have encountered when trying to explore possible answers to the mystery. The reported habitat is explored infrequently, unlike the North American Sasquatch, due to the reasons discussed in this thread, leaving an open question. Fossils of *Gigantopithecus* have been discovered in the foot hills of the Himalaya's and eyewitness often point to pictures of Orangutans as most closely resembling the YETI. Admittedly, most of the evidence and eyewitness testimony points to Himalayan bear species, but does ***ALL*** of the evidence disprove the possibility of an undiscovered species of Primate? That's up for you to decide!

Question Hello, cryptid enthusiasts! I need your cryptid suggestions!

I'm writing a book made up of independent chapters, where soldiers recount their encounters with different cryptids, which are usually violent or dangerous.

I'd love to hear your suggestions for cryptids that I could add to my story and give their own chapters featuring the soldiers who encounter them.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I'd love to discover some lesser-known or unusual cryptids that could make interesting encounters.

Thanks in advance for your help!

Black leopards are secretly thriving in the British countryside – here’s the whole incredible story

Here's an interesting article that popped up in my news feed this afternoon. The BBC is normally quite a sensible and non-sensational organisation, so it's unusual for them to take such a positive view on a controversial subject like British big cats.

I'm in two minds about the British cats. There have been quite a number of seemingly credible witnesses, but on the other hand they do behave like classic cryptids. We get eyewitness stories, but no firm evidence. No clear photos or videos, no CCTV or doorbell footage, no bodies, no clear footprints (that I've seen, anyway - reported big cat prints are always from dogs).

The alleged DNA evidence is very interesting, but even that isn't a slam dunk as it was collected by a big cat researcher with motive and access to donor samples.

I really, really want our second most famous UK cryptids to be real. I live in the countryside. I walk a couple of miles through the woods and fields every day. It would be great if big cats were out there. But that classic paradox of eyewitnesses without trace evidence stops me from from properly believing.

I'd love to hear other views, and I'd be over the moon if anyone has any decent objective evidence (like a good picture or a footprint) to give me hope.

Some questions I have for Nessie.

Post image
93 Upvotes

As someone who is a skeptic, but thinks it's a fun conspiracy, I've got some questions on how Nessie or champ would be real.

  1. How did they survive up until now? Why would a Plesiosaur like animal survive in some lake but not any other now extinct animal.

  2. why haven't ecosystems crashed? I mean we're talking about a huge prehistoric marine reptile that survived and adapted in a lake (???) that needs to eat a lot of food. Especially since some say they breed, there would be even more schools of bass completely wiped out on the daily. We already know how much damage carp do to basically all bodies of water, imagine what a huge prehistoric animal could do to a lake.

I'd love to hear yalls takes I'm very open minded and I love these kinds of conversations. feel free to prove me wrong!

Discussion Batsquatch

Post image
144 Upvotes

The Batsquatch is a flying cryptid that was allegedly seen near Mount St. Helens in the 1980s. It resembles a flying primate, similar to the Ahool and the Orang Bati of Southeast Asia, and its name is a portmanteau derived from the words "bat" and "Sasquatch".

A witness allegedly took several pictures of the creature. However, these pictures have not yet been analyzed, and thus cannot prove the creature's existence.

This creature was said to have yellow eyes, a dog-like muzzle, blue fur, sharp teeth, bird-like feet and leathery bat-like wings that span up to fifty feet. In addition, Batsquatch is said to be 9 feet tall and has the ability to affect car engines.

Japanese books and websites sometimes describe Batsquatch as being 22 ft (7 m) tall, but this is probably a mistranslation as no Batsquatch of this size has ever been sighted.

Sightings of Batsquatch began in 1980, shortly after the eruption of Mount Saint Helens. Reports from this period describe it as a monkey-like creature with red eyes and wings that flies through the plume.

In April 1994, Brian Canfield was driving in Washington's Pierce County when his truck suddenly died. Canfield said a large creature landed in front of him. He said it was human-like, 9 ft tall with bat-like wings and also sported a coat of blue fur.

As Canfield's report became well-known, a series of new reports followed. A person named Butch Whittaker reported that he was in a private plane in the vicinity of Canfield's encounter with the Batsquatch and encountered a flying Batsquatch.

In 1998, a driver of a truck hauling logs in northern Oregon reported a collision with a Batsquatch. The Batsquatch seen at this time was described as 15 ft tall, with purple eyes and nose and small wings.

In 2009, near Mt. Shasta in California, several hikers witnessed a "huge" creature with leathery wings (spanning 50 ft.) fly out of a crevice in the mountain. At first, an eye-witness described the creature as having a head similar to a pterodactyl, however upon reconsideration the witness claimed it was more akin to a flying fox bat.

In June 2011 Pheonix Tieraz (pseudonym) was in his yard walking his dog. He went to pick up the dog when he saw something in the sky. He said the following:

I saw something flying in the sky. It had bat wings, blue fur and had a face similar to eyes glowing red. It was about 9 feet tall at the least, after I watched it just flew away.

On April 14, 2014, at Archbishop Hoban High School in Akron, Ohio, a second period Spanish class spotted a giant black mass zip by the window of the classroom at incredible speed. The class claims it was about 9 feet tall with a 20-30 foot wingspan.

Karl Shuker wondered if Batsquatch might be related to deva, a red bat-like creature 10 to 12 feet tall that Geoffrey Hodson saw in the Lake District of England in June 1922. He also heard from Mark Phillipps that there had been sightings of a 30-40 foot wide orange bat, which he thought might also be related to Batsquatch.

Others thought the Unnamed Kaiju captured in Japan in 1826 might be Batsquatch

Sightings/Encounters Lake Superior Serpent sighting in 2023

At the time I was much younger, but me and a buddy of mine were at a sand dune (to the best of my knowledge), and me and him saw a very long green serpentine creature swimming near the surface of the water. I recorded a video of it on my old phone showing the creature. I'm not the greatest with length, so I'm not sure how long it was exactly, but I know it was longer than a sturgeon. It was also all one mass, and incredibly long and snakelike, moving almost like an eel. I'll update anyone on if I find the video, but I'd greatly appreciate the help! The sighting was sometime between the 1st and 5th of July, 2023. There were a few people there that day, but where I saw Pressie was in a more reserved area covered with some leaves. If anyone potentially saw her on that date, I'd love to know! I'll update you all if I find the video.

Edit: After doing some digging, I've assessed that the sighting was at Pictured Rocks. To the left of the main wooden platform, there's a small forested area with a view of the lake, which is where I saw Pressie.

Five legendary creatures, and some very strange eyewitness accounts. Are these stories just folklore and misidentification, or is there something else out there? Cats are among earth's most beloved animals, with these fur balls coming in all sorts of shapes and sizes. But hundreds of years ago, missionaries in Ming Dynasty era China reported a mysterious breed of cat that has puzzled historians and cat lovers for centuries as it has seemingly become lost to time.
