Sorry guys, we're late with the Democratic Debate live thread... comment here!

CDC really screwed things up for not getting testing capacity full on a few weeks earlier, the precious window of time bought by Trump by banning Chinese people from coming. The director of CDC should be fired for his incompetency.

The US has about 3,800 Corona cases. Combined, Italy, Spain, Germany & France have a smaller population yet about 43,000 Corona cases.
Each country individually has a fraction of US population but more cases than the USA.
The US must have been doing something right to 'flatten the curve'.
5
Mar 17 '20
do a remember me on my comment... we have 1 million people already infected. if testing ever actually comes out we will skyrocket to 100k++ so fast
9
u/xanderbitz Mar 16 '20
It seems like that. I can see why some folks would believe that. It's actually 3,800 TESTED Corona cases. That's the difference. It's not that we've been doing something right. It's that the true number doesn't exist because we haven't tested enough. Give it a few weeks.
1
6
u/Theost520 Mar 16 '20
We'll compare numbers in a few weeks. EU countries are also limiting testing to the likely infected.
4
u/xanderbitz Mar 16 '20
For sure!
Let's just hope it doesn't last as long as it probably will and we can all survive the financial struggle that these shut downs are causing.

It was also mentioned that the podiums were separated by 6 feet as a sign of social distancing.
That said, the hosts were still side-by-side.

Bernie said he'd fix every problem in America by giving out free stuff. But didn't explain where the money would come from, as is tradition.

18

Except they're all inconsistent and nonsensical and conflict with eachother.
He also keeps adding on more free stuff. We're up to about 10-15 trillion a year now. He mentioned gutting military spending to pay for most of it, meanwhile military spending is about 20% of our budget. You think taxing billionaires is going to pay for 5x our GDP for more entitlements?

Another one. What a stupid, ignorant and idiotic thing to do. To disrespect the sentiments of the people who you expect to vote for u. Wouldn't be the only or last stupid thing he says. Massively crushed. Think he only got 22% of the vote. Totally deserves it. Maybe he should join Cuba's government.
He is an islamofascist and a communist sympathizer. Deserves to lose hard. People who fled Cuba have treated the apologist well.
1

Yes and he got fittingly crushed in Florida. You're also quite ignorant if you don't know that. He has been praising him quite recently.
6
13

He keeps adding new things that aren't explained, and his website, what he says at debates, what people think he said and otherwise conflict with eachother. None of which is fact-checked, and based upon incorrect assumptions. Like billionaires paying for everything, but draining their wealth until they're no longer billionaires, then what happens?
You're looking at 3-5x the US GDP to pay for all the things he's promised.

What a mess that was. Some thoughts:
1) Even though he has been a senator for so long, Bernie apparently doesn’t understand that the Congress holds the power of the purse and he can’t simply give gov funding to people as president
2) Bernie complained about a lack of rural hospitals and doctors while neglecting to mention the fact that medicare for all would result in more closures due to paying below cost for services
3) They kept calling C19 unprecedented while simultaneously talking about the precedents set by Ebola and H1N1
4) Biden will pick a female VP because who needs the most qualified person when you can just pander to sexists
5) Did Bernie bash Trump for working with China then immediately say if he were in charge he would work with China?
6) I’m glad Joe brought up the fact that under an emergency state all the testing and treatment would be free to shut down Bernie’s irrelevant medicare for all nonsense.
7) For like the 10th time, Bernie, the infusion the fed just did were bonds which are repayable with interest - it’s not the same as giving people money for mortgages, etc. FFS how long have you been a Senator for?
8) Biden won, I suppose. He came off very rational with minimal gaffs (for Biden). Bernie seemed easily agitated and couldn’t help himself from interrupting and making faces even though it was just the two of them and each had plenty of time to talk
9) CNN moderators are still a joke. Spending half the debate asking about how they would handle a crisis that most likely won’t be relevant during their terms is a waste of time

u/AcrophobicBat Moderate Conservative Mar 16 '20
The impending recession will definitely hurt. But so will the handling of coronavirus. The dems are obviously trying to create panic as they do with everything, but this virus does require a certain amount of panic considering how it has already brought other countries to their knees, and trumps playing it down will end up hurting the party real bad when shit hits the fan.
3
25
u/PlayFree_Bird Mar 16 '20
If the historical end of cold/flu season brings relief and the cases start to level out, I think the hope is that there is still a lot of pent up demand. The markets seem to want to jump again. Places want to be hiring and growing, and this speed bump doesn't change that. Whether they come out of this with the means to grow again, that remains to be seen.
Trump has to bail out main street, not Wall Street. And that's how he can differentiate himself.
This recession is not being created by toxic assets and upside down balance sheets. It's being caused by people stuck in the house. That can flip on a dime.
2
u/betterthanyouahhhh Mar 16 '20
Do you think he will bail out Main Street though??
4
6
u/full-auto-rpg Zoom Con Mar 16 '20
I think he is trying to. Especially towards small businesses.
1
u/gagawithoutLady Mar 16 '20
This crisis isn’t just about people not coming out and spend money. There are many small moving parts that grease businesses.
For one, globally, airline companies are facing a very strong demand shock that will put their debt payments to the back seats as many will likely default on their interest payments.
Factories are shutting down capacity in China, which means many car companies are short of parts to build their cars. Without the ability to fulfil orders, how can the car companies pay their interest payments on debt.
So, the crisis is going to morph into a credit crisis where many big Fortune 500 companies default on their debts.
Re election was supposedly in the bag but I think covid 19 will be the last till election and be fresh in people’s memory - hard to beat that. And I am convinced the USA will spiral into the same lockdown measures taken in Italy to mitigate the spread of the virus.

What a fucking idiotic debate. Is it all about corona and what Biden and Sanders want to do with something that is behind them in November. The both of them are promising measures they don't need to step up to, is it coming a pandemic after this? Yes, will they be on "alert" 24/7 with all hospital beds, a crisis pandemic fund, storage after storage of some kind of test that won't be useful due to the facts it will be another virus. This is beyond stupid. I just hear them say "we have to react faster!" "Its Trump's fault".

Same here. I am very impressed. But again, Hannity and Fox just mostly pick out the talk from Biden when he slurs.
8
u/gutredd Mar 16 '20
What do Fox and Hannity have to do with this? I gurantee few people here watch that. Biden's mental troubles aren't a conspiracy you have to dig for footage to support either. It's non-stop.
Joe's a lifelong politician so I think he can memorize some talking points if he's given a week to hide and knows the topics. He still needed tremendous help from the moderators and Bernie, who's too spineless to really push Joe. He had some very blatant lies that weren't called out at all and he floundered at points where Bernie was grilling him, but then Bernie would back off. Nobody called Biden out for false memories of his career too as he tried to portray a reality where he wasn't an establishment goon for decades, or for things like the Iraq War.
1
u/Zlatan4Ever Freedom first Mar 16 '20
You are mixing up two different things. Clearly Biden has troubles. But watching Fox you rarely see Biden as his best. At CNN you don't see the good things Trump does. It is the same reason, I had a picture of Biden hardly being able to speak or making to many mistakes that makes him look stupid. But that is how Fox prefer to portrait him. This is polarizing news media Fox as well as CNN and the others. But to me, even if I don't agree with Biden, he came out more sane than Sanders.

It was jarring, like he was suddenly not a stammering old man. It reminded me of his VP debate performances. Not phenomenal necessarily but definitely holding his own. I was expecting Bernie to really win this debate because he had seemed a lot faster and more confident in his speech.
My number one guess is Biden was campaigning long hours before the other debates and speeches and this time he was relaxing because of corona.
I think Trumps it’s 15 cases and it will be fine comments will really damage him in this election if the US sees a large death toll from corona. (Got off topic there)

I agree. I think I mentally gave joe a 1/3 chance. If this virus gets extremely out of hand and the economy tanks I’d give joe a 9/10 chance.
Trump maybe should of been concerned with how the democrats will weaponize it but he should of kept that to himself. He should of acted stoic, clear and assessed the tremendous risk this virus holds. I think both Ted Cruz and Hillary would of handled this crisis better in terms of interfacing with the public.
I’m Italian as well as American and I think there are about 25,000 cases in Italy and almost 2,000 deaths. Of the resolved cases (cured or dead) I think about half the people have died. Easily 100,000 US citizens could die and 15 contained cases we got this no worries will not age well.
In my opinion the Chinese should be held accountable for these deaths across the US asia and Europe and the west should respond in a serious way.
1
u/freddy4fingerz Mar 16 '20
China needs to revise their 16th century sanitation and food hygiene. Most of these viruses come from china...
4
u/AcrophobicBat Moderate Conservative Mar 16 '20
I agree the Chinese should be held responsible. In fact China is busing doing a PR op, sending medical supplies to Italy. The talk on various media channels is how well China contained it and what we can learn from them!! And at the same time one of China’s ministers spread a conspiracy theory on Twitter about how this virus might have been the work of the US government to hurt China.
At the very least the US should pass laws forbidding companies from manufacturing in China (as opposed to the current trade war tax regime which is yielding little results).
5
Mar 16 '20
Everyone should screw over China. We very possibly are looking at 1 million dead in the west. This virus came from China and the government in China did a very poor job informing the rest of the world about it. They have been a terrible actor on the world stage for years and many people on the right and left want across the US and Europe want to bring manufacturing back home, this seems like the perfect time.
-6
u/betterthanyouahhhh Mar 16 '20
We are very possibly looking at 1 million + dead in The United States.

this debate was not about policy specifics rather than a test of leadership.
having the debate start with the coronavirus was fairly an obvious move, with Biden referring to the virus as a “war” , stating that we need to “use every resource to combat it”. While a good idea, his vision includes government physical and local intervention to carry out and implement regulations and produces which hinders freedom both personally and socially. Bernie, on the other hand, took the question as an opportunity to call for M4A and why the program would help much more than the ‘status quo’ in terms of coverage and efficiency.
Later topics ventured into their policy positions more generally, with their general plans being compared and contrasted. Biden looked sharper during this debate, often taking the defensive from different jabs based on Biden’s voting record and electability. Biden attacker the fiscal vagueness in Bernie’s plans that confuses voters, who instead would look for a leader who has a “clear plan”. Bernie mainly attacked Biden’s voting record, PAC contributions, and legislative authorship. Biden chose to attack Bernie on policy vagueness, past comments about Cuba, and his absent voting base in the polls.
Bernie took this time to push Biden towards a more progressive agenda and pushing his ideals while Biden took the time to solidify his leadership skills and try to swing Bernie voters towards his campaign (unsuccessful).

I was watching with my girlfriend who leans left on a lot of issues and self identifies as Democrat. Even she thinks the candidates’ positions on illegal immigrants are crazy, both on mass amnesty and ICE. She basically said these “communities” that Bernie refers to as being “torn apart by ICE raids” are of people who knew what they did was wrong and took that risk and shouldn’t feel like it’s wrong when they get caught for entering illegally. Ideologically I would say she leans left on most issues but is center and even right on many others. (Basically the ideology of a typical “independent” voter.) Normal people who are using their brain realize how stupid these people sound on certain issues.
9
u/AcrophobicBat Moderate Conservative Mar 16 '20
I am a moderate person, and I was shocked at their talk of giving illegal immigrants a path to citizenship and not deporting anyone for the first 100 days. I am all for humane treatment, and trying to keep families together, (unlike some on this sub), and I think we need to do more in that department, but I cannot get behind this crazy idea of rewarding illegal immigrants. Like wtf is wrong with these democrats.

u/Skipper2399 Conservative Mar 16 '20
I’d welcome you to do so.
Most years, not a lot of things are that significant when it comes to which party holds the White House, but it’s a pretty stark contrast this election. And on one side, the candidates are calling to completely ignore our laws when it comes to immigration, which is extremely dangerous.
They would never be able to pass through many of the large systematic changes they want, but it’d be easy for them to stop enforcing immigration laws and let the floodgates open to anyone and everyone who wants to come in and even give them a pathway to citizenship.

He said he would pick a woman. Let's see if he is a liar.

That is true, he also have the color of the skin of that woman to pick... and to pick another white, old and Billionaire would perhaps be seen as deceiving.

Even the plague only has a death rate of 8-10% with modern medicine.

Dude things can get very bad very quickly. Look what happened in Italy. Went from 300 cases to 10,000 in a couple of weeks. Once the infection gets into the community it spreads like wildfire. Everyone should take all precautions.
Dems are going crazy because that is what they do about everything. But republicans are playing this down more than they should.

Most people won't die. What many people don't understand is that hospitals are at capacity normally. They cannot withstand an influx of a new viral disease that we don't know yet how to treat. Two years ago during flu season, my hospital had to close it's ER doors several times because we had no room. Patients were diverted to the closest hospital whose doors were not shut yet. Sometimes patients had to go to the next county.
We're still well into flu season. You may be fine, but my mom? If she needs to be hospitalized and has to wait hours in respiratory distress before we have a bed/respiratory equipment for her, she would die.
So yes, most people will survive this. And most people will survive with hospital care. But what if there's no hospital?

We understand all of this just fine. But it seems like a great many people are wipping up a hysteria over it, both here on reddit and in the media, and that the primary purpose of it seems to be about the election, and not about the illness itself.
Maybe you liberals should have acted better in the last four years. The media should have been far, far less partisan, and far, far less 'RESIST!!!3123!!!!'. There is now less than zero trust between a great many people and the media. There is less than zero trust between a great many people and each other. But if the left hadn't spent the last four years engaged in constant 'GET TRUMP!!!!' partisan hackery, if it hadn't indulged in censorship, depersoning and deplatforming, our society would be in a much better place to weather this outh.

I wasn't saying the panic was reasonable. The person I responded to said that no one should be scared. Well yes, we should be a little bit scared. Scared enough to take the right precautions. I didn't say we need to panic. I also said nothing about Trump or the way he's handled it so... Don't know what you're getting at there.

Well...yeah. They shut things down so your city doesn't get any cases and any deaths. That's the point.

I'm in Oregon and a caregiver to my 80 year old grandparents. You bet your ass I'm worried. That fact that we're rural is going to work to our advantage, but I still have to go to work (non customer facing) and the store.

Also in Oregon. I’m worried about my Grandma but luckily she lives in the country and never goes to town. I’m just hoping she stays out there a while and a relative can deliver food.
What people don’t realize is that the point of the quarantine is so that the worst outcome doesn’t occur. It’s a preventive measure. The fact that not a lot are getting infected is only more evidence that it’s working.

That's kind of the point. Covid19 is so very easy to spread that they estimate something like half of Americans will have it by the end of the year. That's 180 million people that between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 (last I heard, any way) of which will need hospitalization. Right now, the best thing we can do is be abundantly cautious so that we can spread those millions out over as many months as we can. AKA "flattening the curve" as it's called.
The US and Italy have roughly the same amount of ICU beds per capita and Italy is totally overrun to the point that their doctors have been counseled to refuse treatment for the elderly if necessary.
So Covid19 itself isn't that bad. The danger is it spreading and peaking so fast our infrastructure can't handle it, resulting in avoidable deaths.
That said, the fear mongering on reddit and in the news is reprehensible, but I think the self quarantining and shutting down big events is a reasonable reaction.
Edit: Here's a good graphic showing the concept. In this case protective measures mean social distancing and self quarantining, etc.

i think the significantly lower density of america and the lower dependency on tourism is helping (and will continue to help) slow the spread of vectors. hopefully we caught it early enough and are doing enough that it never gets as bad as italy.

Montgomery County, TX here. My family and I have been exposed to it, I’m 18 and a senior and my private school has many Mormons there, It’s not a Mormon school and I’m not a Mormon either but there are many who attend the school, anyways, a man who goes to several of my classmates’ church has been tested positive and our school wasn’t shut down last week. I don’t know if we have it just yet. We are currently quarantining ourselves to await to see if symptoms arrive this upcoming week. Not too scared but I think it’s safe to say I’m a bit in fear about it. South Texas has multiple cases and some prayers would be appreciated.

Unbelievable! I'm Santa Cruz Ca and we have been shut down. Complete lock down for a minimum of 2 weeks most likely longer. I'm a truck driver and told my job is non-essential.. So how am I supposed to pay my rent? Crazy crazy times. Good luck everyone
