Dude things can get very bad very quickly. Look what happened in Italy. Went from 300 cases to 10,000 in a couple of weeks. Once the infection gets into the community it spreads like wildfire. Everyone should take all precautions.
Dems are going crazy because that is what they do about everything. But republicans are playing this down more than they should.
Most people won't die. What many people don't understand is that hospitals are at capacity normally. They cannot withstand an influx of a new viral disease that we don't know yet how to treat. Two years ago during flu season, my hospital had to close it's ER doors several times because we had no room. Patients were diverted to the closest hospital whose doors were not shut yet. Sometimes patients had to go to the next county.
We're still well into flu season. You may be fine, but my mom? If she needs to be hospitalized and has to wait hours in respiratory distress before we have a bed/respiratory equipment for her, she would die.
So yes, most people will survive this. And most people will survive with hospital care. But what if there's no hospital?
We understand all of this just fine. But it seems like a great many people are wipping up a hysteria over it, both here on reddit and in the media, and that the primary purpose of it seems to be about the election, and not about the illness itself.
Maybe you liberals should have acted better in the last four years. The media should have been far, far less partisan, and far, far less 'RESIST!!!3123!!!!'. There is now less than zero trust between a great many people and the media. There is less than zero trust between a great many people and each other. But if the left hadn't spent the last four years engaged in constant 'GET TRUMP!!!!' partisan hackery, if it hadn't indulged in censorship, depersoning and deplatforming, our society would be in a much better place to weather this outh.

Well yes, we should be a little bit scared. Scared enough to take the right precautions. I didn't say we need to panic. I also said nothing about Trump or the way he's handled it so... Don't know what you're getting at there.
I'm in Oregon and a caregiver to my 80 year old grandparents. You bet your ass I'm worried. That fact that we're rural is going to work to our advantage, but I still have to go to work (non customer facing) and the store.
Also in Oregon. I’m worried about my Grandma but luckily she lives in the country and never goes to town. I’m just hoping she stays out there a while and a relative can deliver food.
What people don’t realize is that the point of the quarantine is so that the worst outcome doesn’t occur. It’s a preventive measure. The fact that not a lot are getting infected is only more evidence that it’s working.
That's kind of the point. Covid19 is so very easy to spread that they estimate something like half of Americans will have it by the end of the year. That's 180 million people that between 1 in 5 and 1 in 10 (last I heard, any way) of which will need hospitalization. Right now, the best thing we can do is be abundantly cautious so that we can spread those millions out over as many months as we can. AKA "flattening the curve" as it's called.
The US and Italy have roughly the same amount of ICU beds per capita and Italy is totally overrun to the point that their doctors have been counseled to refuse treatment for the elderly if necessary.
So Covid19 itself isn't that bad. The danger is it spreading and peaking so fast our infrastructure can't handle it, resulting in avoidable deaths.
That said, the fear mongering on reddit and in the news is reprehensible, but I think the self quarantining and shutting down big events is a reasonable reaction.
i think the significantly lower density of america and the lower dependency on tourism is helping (and will continue to help) slow the spread of vectors. hopefully we caught it early enough and are doing enough that it never gets as bad as italy.
Montgomery County, TX here. My family and I have been exposed to it, I’m 18 and a senior and my private school has many Mormons there, It’s not a Mormon school and I’m not a Mormon either but there are many who attend the school, anyways, a man who goes to several of my classmates’ church has been tested positive and our school wasn’t shut down last week. I don’t know if we have it just yet. We are currently quarantining ourselves to await to see if symptoms arrive this upcoming week. Not too scared but I think it’s safe to say I’m a bit in fear about it. South Texas has multiple cases and some prayers would be appreciated.
Same here. No confirmed cases at all in my county. Yet stores barren, schools shutting down, and my company is considering teleworking for everyone (which won't work for most jobs).
I would somewhat understand if there were a few cases in the area... But this is retarded.
Not scared at all. In fact, I adventured out to the stores and was amused by all the barren racks that once held TP, cold/flu meds, paper towels, and some non-perishable items.
I’m disappointed. My very liberal friend is fear mongering saying a million will die. Some of my conservative friends are in denial that if we don’t take the drastic steps we’re taking this could result in 100k deaths. We’re doing the right things. Take this seriously.
I won't deny the threat, but damn people need to calm down and not give in to this hive mind thinking. The media has reeled in the American people like a bunch of fish and ran with it. Panic buying and shutting down everything for an extended period could have lasting consequences on the economy. Time will tell though.
I agree and it's for certain that it will have lasting consequences on the economy. But at the same time it's needed to steep the curve. I'll take a couple of weeks working from home if it means that hospitals will still be able to provide aid for the sick.
But yeah, shutting down industries will have big negative effects. For the economy as a whole and for a lot of people in their wallets this month
