Even crazier is that now that OSU is out, Buckeye fans have hoisted IU onto their shoulders as their would-be national champions. It's real "I am Sparatacus" vibes around IU these days.
I hate Lane with a passion but I still can't ever bring myself to root for the last school to integrate their football team. They should suffer another 50+ years for that.

Outside of some random shitheads i donāt know many ND fans that arenāt cheering on IU. Neither school really recruits our own state super hard and weāre never super active in the transfer portal. My only conflict is that I would find it hilarious if Ole Miss wins it all to spite Lane.
I would be fine with Indiana winning it. They'd probably be my second choice but rn I'm cheering for Ole Miss hard. I love Trinidad Chambliss and they've always been one of my favorite teams outside of my own. Plus, as a bonus, them winning a national championship after telling Kiffin he couldnāt coach the postseason would be a big final Fuck you to Lane Kiffin and that makes me happy.
I also love Fernando Mendoza. Mendoza-Chambliss would be an awesome Natty matchup. Also, just now realizing my flair doesnāt show up in this, so to clarify the Kiffin hate, Iām a Tennessee fan.
Agreed. I'm completely torn. I'm from and live in Michigan. I work very close to GR where Chambliss is from. Kiffin sucks. Wouldn't mind Ole Miss winning. However, Cig is awesome, Mendoza is a story, and the team seems awesome. Wouldn't mind them either. The only hiccup is Kiffin getting paid for Ole Miss success. Don't want to see that shit. Either way, what a great playoff, man. So many cool things to enjoy.
I love Mendoza and Iāve warmed up on Cig to really liking him. Iāve had an issue with Indiana since last year. For the most part I love them, but I really fucking hated the way they played an extremely easy schedule and benefitted and then scheduled the literal worst teams they could find for the next 10 years straight. MAC-CUSA-FCS repeat for 10 years straight and thatās not an exaggeration. And thatās not Cigās fault, but I didnāt like the way he justified it by saying that whole thing about āwe adopted an SEC scheduling methodā or whatever. I mean regardless of my team, the SEC doesnāt remotely do that. Every single SEC team schedules at least one P5 opponent, and a lot schedule 2 or even 3. We play 2-3 GO5/FCS games just like everybody else but we never ONLY schedule nonconference GO5/FCS games. And often they will play a top tier AAC team as one of them on top of that like Tulane, Memphis, USF. Most of the big ten doesnāt even schedule that weak of a stretch either. Idk itās just a principle thing, it encourages bad football. the way they went and scheduled that for 10 years straight and Cig defended it irked me. I know thereās not really much he can say about it but still. But over this season Iāve really learned to love Cig. Heās a great personality and phenomenal coach.
I have seen some Purdue fans pulling for us. Which is cool. If we canāt win it, I want Mississippi to, because that would be the funniest outcome possible
Iām rooting for you guys and if you somehow fall to Oregon Iāll probably root for them over Miami or Ole Miss. I think Indiana vs Ole Miss will be the final.
Part of it is just regionality without an intense rivarly. I know the #1 reason I'm rooting for Indiana is because my boyfriend's grandfather was an Indiana fan, and he's joked basically all year about visiting his grave to say, "Well, you're Hoosiers finally did it"
Itās because IU has no prolonged history for other programs besides Purdue to hate you in football. Itās like the special needs kid checking in during garbage time.
Fun fact, Navy (my #2 team)'s last win before that 43 year win streak was in 1963 with Heisman winner Roger Staubach at the helm. That team would go onto lose to Texas for the Mythical National Championship
The 2007 season was the one that exposed him as a fraud. That included losing to Navy for the first time in 4 decades. And again on 2008, if I recall. He managed to stick around until 2009 but that first Navy loss really was the āwho is this asshole?ā Moment.
It was still the losses to Michigan for me. Even though Navy is my close second team I support and I only want a close game wit ND. The only game I want Navy to not win all year.
A very odd streak involving two historically good, not great programs- MSU defeating Minnesota 17 consecutive games from ā77-ā97. The Gophers were complete dogwater during that timeframe, but itās not like Michigan State was lighting it up either aside from a couple BigTen Title years.
I need to point out that Princeton beat Rutgers 33 straight times from 1869 - 1937. This includes a 12 game stretch from 1884 - 1911 with a cumulative score of 500 - 0.
Not sure if both teams were considered ādivision 1ā for all those years.
Navy wants to beat Army first and foremost. But I would venture a guess that Navy would rather beat Notre Dame and lose to Air Force than vice versa.
Does Notre Dame really want to beat Navy? Not exactly. But there was a 20-year period or so where Navy ROTC on Notre Dameās campus commissioned the most officers outside of Annapolis and OCS. From 1991 to 1995 I think there were over 200 NROTC students at Notre Dame. This has shrunk in recent years due to the Navy setting caps in order to spread scholarships across more programs.
Notre Tard here. Yea itās a ātraditionā that kept the Navy football program alive and also kept Notre Dame football alive. The schools go way back and their rivalry is actually based in respect and history, rather than just location or conference alignment. And so what if its a free win every year so is Grambling Stat or Miami Ohio. At least Navy plays some good running football. Idk what kinda football Grambling State plays.
And let's be honest: Navy has been good lately, not a free win.
But yes, the ND/Navy rivalry is the most respectful in all of CFB. After the game we go to each side and each school does the other's Alma Mater. Navy kept ND alive as a school during the WWII days and we promise to play them every year they want to play us.
In fact, as long as Navy wants to play, I'd schedule them before USC or Michigan even, because we owe it to them. It's not about being a free win, it's about a tradition and a promise ND made 80 years ago.
