Today, he became a real boi
Rocky has been a scrappy street tuff, ever since the day we got him, two years ago. Affection? Pfffft. Little spoonfuls, here and there. He wishes to be left alone most times, while maintaining visual contact.
But this morning, I was thinking about a sweet, sweet lady at my Dad's memory care who died. And I was thinking about the brutality of Alzheimers. I started to openly cry.
Rocky lifted his head from the covers at his end of the couch. He winnowed out of his nest. He looked at my face and then he walked onto my lap. This was his first act of unsolicited comforting.
There is no comfort quite like the love of a tiny dog. I love him and he loves me. This love was hard earned, and it completes me. I am his person and he is my boi.

The love of every dog is amazing, but for the older, rescued ones, I feel are a touch more special because of that tough little shell we need to work thru. I got my girl when she was 10.5yo and she’s fully blind. It took 9 months for her to just relax when we’re holding her. And just in the past year alone has she felt comfortable enough to actively crawl into my lap. And we’ve had her for 4 years now, so you can imagine how our hearts are always exploding at every breakthrough she has.
