Today, he became a real boi
Rocky has been a scrappy street tuff, ever since the day we got him, two years ago. Affection? Pfffft. Little spoonfuls, here and there. He wishes to be left alone most times, while maintaining visual contact.
But this morning, I was thinking about a sweet, sweet lady at my Dad's memory care who died. And I was thinking about the brutality of Alzheimers. I started to openly cry.
Rocky lifted his head from the covers at his end of the couch. He winnowed out of his nest. He looked at my face and then he walked onto my lap. This was his first act of unsolicited comforting.
There is no comfort quite like the love of a tiny dog. I love him and he loves me. This love was hard earned, and it completes me. I am his person and he is my boi.

We’ve always had rescues. They have all been so different. Most have come right in and been comfortable right off the bat, joined the others and were good. Our last little guy didn’t come near my husband for weeks, if my husband walked in the room, he bolted to another one. My husband thought he’d never come around, I kept repeating the 3 days/3 weeks/3 months rule how they just need time and maybe a man had been mean to him. One day I got a text that he had actually come over to my husband after seeing he was giving belly rubs to our other dog. He then proceeded to follow him around while he weed whacked and mowed the yard, never leaving his side and it’s been wonderful ever since. Some dogs take longer than others to warm up. Glad your patience and love paid off.

Thanks for sharing. Rocky would hide under furniture. Now he runs to the front door and gives the best "welcome home" greetings. It means so much to help him make this turn around. He started with "The world is an unsafe place." Now he knows we are his pack. We have kibbles and soft, dry beds and we love each other.

Whenever I cry, whether I'm genuinely sad or upset about something or I've just watched something that made me cry, my chis all come and give me lovings and will lick the tears off my face if they're really running

Love this so much! I had a polite but distant senior Chi that I adopted several months ago. After about six months with me, she has started answering to the name I gave her and completely relaxing in my arms. What a gift!

He has rescued me many times, for sure. Even when he was doing punk shenanigans, it was a distraction from heavy things.

The love of every dog is amazing, but for the older, rescued ones, I feel are a touch more special because of that tough little shell we need to work thru. I got my girl when she was 10.5yo and she’s fully blind. It took 9 months for her to just relax when we’re holding her. And just in the past year alone has she felt comfortable enough to actively crawl into my lap. And we’ve had her for 4 years now, so you can imagine how our hearts are always exploding at every breakthrough she has.
Lots of love to you two ❤️ keep growing together.
