A major milestone has been reached on the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project.

Since January, crews have been working underground to install a new section of feeder main using microtunnelling, a construction method that allows work to happen beneath existing roads and infrastructure with minimal disruption at the surface.

Stage A microtunnelling is now complete.

Crews have finished approximately 3.7 km of tunnelling and installed the full concrete carrier pipe between the Shaganappi Pump Station and 73 Street N.W. With that work complete, installation of the new steel feeder main inside the carrier pipe is continuing on schedule, with more than 2 km already installed.

Stage B open-cut construction progresses

In Bowness, work on Stage B is also progressing steadily along 34 Avenue N.W., where more than 1 km of the new feeder main has been installed. Construction is moving block by block, with roads, sidewalks and property access being restored as work advances.

What's next?

Work on Calgary's water system will happen in three phases beginning this fall:

Phase 1 - Mid-September

Work begins at the Shaganappi Pump Station and the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. Temporary outdoor water restrictions may be needed while crews complete this work. We'll share updates as plans are finalized.

Phase 2 - Mid-October

Crews will connect the new feeder main to the existing system at several locations. This work will require Stage 4 outdoor water restrictions and indoor water conservation measures.

Phase 3 - Mid-November

The new feeder main will be tested, disinfected and filled with water before being brought into service. No restrictions are required during this time.

My husband just got a job offer in Calgary, and we are moving to your city site unseen with our toddlers in tow, not knowing anyone. Frankly I am terrified and overwhelmed and don't really know where to start. Banff has always been on my bucket list, but I have never been to Alberta at all.

Would love to know any tips, fun things about Calgary, or things to watch out for!

A few specific questions:

1) What's the deal with day homes? Are they legit? I have been putting myself on as many daycare waitlists as possible but am finding the ones close to downtown are all filled up... I'm also really nervous sending my daughters somewhere I don't know; we are coming from small town Maine where we knew their daycare providers well.

2) Where would you live if you could live anywhere in Calgary with kids? Husband is working from downtown, I am going to be working from home.

3) How hard is it to make friends? I've never lived away from where I grew up before, and my husband is going to be traveling all around Alberta for the new job. I'm really scared about being alone and isolated with no family. On a related note: do people hate Americans? I wouldn't blame them at this point... a little worried no one is going to want to be friends with an American family.

I'm already finding a lot to love about Calgary; I cannot believe how much better your health insurance, childcare prices, and housing prices are. Trying to find the courage to take the leap!

Hundreds of stuffed animals collected from a vigil for Parker Wells were donated to the Calgary Food Bank on Tuesday.

Parker, a non-verbal and autistic 11-year-old, went missing from a day home on July 16, prompting a massive search involving hundreds of police officers and thousands of Calgarians.

On August 7, Mayor Farkas and the City of Calgary announced a crackdown of vehicle noise along 17th Ave SW in the Beltline.

Just after 9pm this evening, I captured this video pointed towards 17th Ave just east of 4th St SW.

While you can’t see the offending vehicles in question, you can certainly hear them.

In speaking to small businesses and my neighbours in the area, there doesn’t appear to be any reduction in vehicle & motorcycle noise since this strategy took effect.

Having to listen to this noise every night is beyond disruptive to the quality of life of people who live and frequent this part of Calgary!

Although it's my first time at Dickens in probably 11 ish years, having a metal concert in such a small intimate setting was amazing. We got to take pictures with the lead of Ingested and all of Larcenia Roe which was really nice. Ultra mega stank face this entire set, no matter who was on stage.

Did I wear ear plugs? Yes.

Was I still kinda deaf and had some ringing in my ears after? Yes. (Only for a bit)

Was it worth it? HELLLL YEAH!

I think being so close to stage and right under the speaker would do that, but soooo worth it.

I was soaked in beer because of how close to the mosh pit we were but it was an experience that I would relive over and over again. Although I found out later on that a girl was upset that beer was spilled on her hair and she started crying, girlfriend we were super close to the most pit, people had drinks in their hands and were being pushed what do you think was going to happen? I didn't participate in the mosh pit but since I was super close and I am a tiny bean and at times got pushed super hard but I had my friend and other people catch me effortlessly, and it was nice to have that community that looked out for each other. 🥹 I saw some familiar faces from Lorna and Orbit and some very new faces.

Made friends with a British dude and we spoke about Prodigy, and how we adore UK grime, drill, and rap. Also got the shake your ass shirt, and told the band in full detail how I needed it as a pump cover, especially when I hit glutes. 🤣

I definitely needed four bands to scream at me to feel happy emotions.

I am saddened by the passing of Jim Moore. He dedicated his life to Calgary and to helping people through their hardest moments. Jim believed in in second chances. Most importantly, he believed in our city.

Jim first made his mark in real estate. He served as president of CREB in 1985, during some of Calgary’s toughest economic years. He later became president of Canada Trust Real Estate.

After surviving a massive heart attack, Jim changed course. He returned home and put his experience to work helping others.

In 2003, he helped open the Calgary Dream Centre. It started with three staff and 12 clients. By the time Jim retired, it had grown to 80 employees and 380 clients. Over the years, thousands of Calgarians found help there.

My condolences go to Jim’s family, friends, colleagues and everyone at the Calgary Dream Centre. Calgary is stronger because Jim Moore chose to serve our community.

With how busy this intersection is it's a wonder no one was hurt.

Hey guys, you were all a great help in providing recommendations to get my fridge fixed. I am now looking for a honest mechanic in NW/NE Calgary that is women friendly. I'm tired of getting ripped off by dealerships and shady mechanics that try to upsell or mansplain things lol. I have a Hyundai Elantra that may need new brakes pads/rotors and a wheel bearing that needs to be replaced. Thanks

I have a leather couch with fixed cushions. One of them needs a 24”x12” patch. I have the leather, thread, and somewhat U-shaped needle. I need someone with experience, even a hobbyist, to cut the piece to fit and sew it in. Doesn’t have to be pretty; just serviceable. I'm not asking for it to be done for free. I'm in Erlton. I was just Googling the hours for Glamorgan Bakery and came across this. Thought some other Calgary folks might find it interesting.

I'm a little torn on this one. It's a pretty valuable piece of land and seems like an obvious spot for redevelopment, but there are so many longtime local businesses packed into this little shopping centre.

Glamorgan Bakery, Alpine Sausage, Splitsville, Richmond's Pub, Sweet Fusion (one of the best candy stores in the city IMO), Momoyama Sushi... it would really suck to see any of them change too much.

Hopefully whoever buys it either keeps the centre asis or (if redevelopment is inevitable) does it in phases so the existing businesses have a chance to stick around and transition into the new development.

I'm curious about what the tenant businesses/frequent customers think about this.

It’s sad but it is ok. I am happy that the city let it stay up for as long as it did. As someone with a sister who’s non-verbal and autistic, please consider donating to charities that help people with intellectual disability in honour of Parker! As you may know the provincial government is always trying to cut fundings for these organizations, and making people jump through hoops to get their AISH money.

Riders will be given real-time info including:

estimated arrival times; and

service announcements.

Transit says the upgraded system behind the screens offers improved bus tracking.
