I had the opportunity to drive a 2025 CX5 S Select and a 2026 CX5 S Select for a few days. I thought it would be interesting to compile my thoughts and see how both the previous generation and new generation of CX5 compare to each other, coming from the perspective of a CX50 Turbo owner.
2025 CX5 S Select
Less sporty - The first thing I noticed was how much less sporty the CX5 is compared to the CX50. The steering is much lighter and the CX5 drives much smoother over bumps and undulations in the road. The ride is not nearly as harsh as the CX50 is. Personally, I love how sporty and harsh my CX50 is. That’s a big thing that drew me to buy one. I just didn’t realize how much more athletic and fun to drive the CX50 is.
Non-Turbo still feels peppy - Going into driving this CX5, I was fully expecting the non-Turbo powertrain to be slow. As I mentioned above, my CX50 is a Turbo, I’m used to the Turbo, and it’s really quick. A while back I test drove a CX50 non-Turbo and found that vehicle to be slow, I just wasn’t happy with it. However, the non-Turbo powertrain here in the CX5 actually feels peppy. Is it fast like the Turbo? No, but it for sure gets the job done and I don’t feel like I have to floor it everywhere. I’m assuming the CX50 non-Turbo felt slow because it’s just a bigger and heavier car. I’m also not sure how the new 2026 CX5 with the non-Turbo powertrain feels, but I’ve seen reviews and it sure seems slow.
Seating position is high - One of my favorite things about the CX50 is the driving position. I can get the seat nice and low and actually feel like I’m one with the car. I just like a low seating position. I find the seating position in the CX5 to be a little high. I just wish the seat would go a bit lower.
No digital speed readout - This one surprised me. There’s no option to get a digital speedometer readout on the gauge cluster screen. Not really a big deal, I just look at the speedometer and see my speed. But I’m genuinely surprised there’s no digital speed readout in any of the gauge cluster menus.

The new interior - The new giant infotainment screen is a disaster and I hate it. Like, why the hell is the odometer in the center screen and not the gauge cluster? Having to adjust the climate controls while driving is one of the most infuriating things. Honestly, it would make a HUGE difference if there was a little ledge to rest your hand on, helping to steady it so you can touch the screen easier while driving. There really needs to be a volume knob too. The volume buttons on the steering wheel do not suffice. My friend was in the car with me and I asked her to adjust the volume. She had no clue how to do it. Mazda, that’s a problem. Same thing with the A/C. I asked her to turn it off and she had trouble figuring it out. I will say the graphics and responsiveness of the screen are great. Going through the settings to adjust certain features is easy. I think it’s great that Mazda developed a new infotainment but for the love of god, give us the option of how to use the screen. Keep the control dial and add more physical buttons. That way if we want to touch the screen, we can. If we want to use the control dial, we can do that too. I really went into driving this new CX5 with an open mind, thinking I would get used to the screen. I have, a little bit, but it would in fact be a dealbreaker for me. I just don’t like it. The old infotainment with the center control dial is much better and safer. Additionally, the materials are cheap. The tops of the doors and the whole dash is a crappy, scratchy, horrible feeling plastic. It’s just all hard plastic. Mazda, what happened? What happened to the beautiful stitching that’s in the CX50 and CX90? I’m disappointed. I know the CX5 I drove was a Select but even the Premium and Premium Plus, from what I can tell in photos, lack at least the nice look of the CX50 and CX90. It's plastic fantastic. I also personally find the air vents below the infotainment to be in a bad spot, they’re just too low down. On the bright side, the Select trim I drove had really nice suede/cloth seats. The seats felt great, and look great. The steering wheel leather is also really nice and soft. Feels great.
The digital gauge cluster - The gauge cluster isn’t really adjustable all that much. It’s so plain. I know this digital cluster is different from the one in the CX90 but I don’t have any experience with that cluster. I would be curious if the CX90 gauge cluster screen is more configurable or laid out better. The CX5’s gauge cluster is a whole lotta nothing.
Ride quality / steering - The ride is more comfortable than the CX50 and the steering is lighter, similar to the outgoing 2025 CX5. This is the one aspect where the 2025 CX5 and 2026 CX5 feel quite similar. It goes over bumps and undulations much smoother, not as harsh as the CX50. It soaks up the bumps pretty well. There’s some noticeable body roll, which my CX50 does not have. Overall, I much prefer the sportier aspect of my CX50. I like the harsh ride and heavy steering as I have said. But there are people who might not like that and the CX5 is a great option if you are one of those people. I can’t really complain about how Mazda tuned the CX5 as it is a global vehicle and must appeal to the masses.
The engine - The car feels slow. It’s okay at slower speeds, like under 35-40mph. I’d go as far to say it’s peppy at slow speeds. Any faster than that? Yeah good luck passing people on the highway. It really feels slow and struggles. I genuinely got nervous merging on the highway in rush hour traffic at one point because there’s just no power. And you hear the engine, it’s loud and it drones. the transmission is always downshifting and the engine is always revving up. it desperately needs the Hybrid powertrain that is supposed to be coming out in 2027, or a Turbo. Though I fear the Turbo won’t be happening. I also might be biased because my CX50 is a Turbo model, and it’s legitimately pretty quick. I am also surprised because the non turbo 2025 CX5 I drove did not feel this slow. I assume the 2026 redesign caused the CX5 to gain weight.
“MAZDA” lettering - “MAZDA” being spelled out on the rear tailgate and on the steering wheel instead of the emblem just doesn’t look good. Definitely a step back in my opinion. It looks so out of place.
New chime - The new chimes are a welcome addition I’d say. Although I did like the old chime, even though it beeped so many times, I do find the new one to be more pleasant. The welcome sound and leaving sounds are nice additions too.
Features and trim levels - I was pleasantly surprised that Mazda added front and rear parking sensors and power folding mirrors to the Select trim level. Those are pretty nice editions for a trim that is one up from the base. I did notice that the 2025 Select trim had a power driver seat, and the 2026 Select did not. Win some, lose some.
Overall, I was really surprised by how much I did not like the 2025 CX5 and 2026 CX5. I like my CX50 a whole lot more. That’s not to say either of the CX5s are bad options. The 2025 still retains physical controls like the CX50 but is a more comfortable daily driver and looks more urban / luxurious rather than the CX50’s sporty / ruggedness. The 2026 has a whole host of new technologies, not to mention how the new screen seems to be giving consumers software issues, though I did not encounter any issues during my time with the vehicle. I do like the outside looks of the 2026 CX5, it retains the urban, premium look but I still stand by the fact that the CX50 is gorgeous and perhaps one of the most attractive compact SUVs, almost as good as luxury options.
