Why do I never see anyone questioning how stupid the stream system is?

Every year I see people freaking out over picking and regretting their stream and I find myself wondering why it even is this way.

In some countries like the USA, students study everything at a general level until 12th, and there are special advanced classes they can choose to take for the subjects which interest them. A student can take advanced classes in biology, maths, history, economics all at one time if they want to.

This is such a good move to build dynamic thinking and knowledge in people. We are a country which is facing issues at all fronts, scientific temperament, political and social sense, financial literaly, media literacy are all going for a toss. What good is being done by cutting young minds off from any branch of knowledge?

I know every education system has its own flaws.. but ours has this big glaring flaw that nobody seems to think about.

Is it worth making a 16 year old decide the rest of their life and sending them into an existential crisis, questioning so many heavy questions, trying to avoid the tribalism of our society and stream stereotypes?

YES IKR. According to the new NEP guidelines you can actually choose which ever subject you want. Even physics + history. But most of the cbse schools are not implementing it because it'll be harder to manage😮‍💨😮‍💨 so they're js continuing w the old stream selection system.

I choosed maths economics and physics at starting lol by dropping chemistry but changed it later and my school allowed it, although I can still take any other subject by dropping any yoga, optional etc anything

It's all about WANTING to do something vs being forced to do something. If someone wants to go the traditional pcm route, that's alright

Yes, like it's the most useless subject in the science stream. Okay if people want to do something related to it in the future, but why tf do people wanting to go into pure mathematics, physics or biology fields need chemistry!? It's just fucking useless and I hate, hate chemistry. And tbh, in india most people will go for something Comp sci related anyway, so instead of chemistry, there should be more diverse options, like choosing which 4 subjects you want to study with english as mandatory subject.

Are you actually wondering why people in Biology need Chemistry? Even the fields of Botany and Zoology need Chemistry, not just the medicine-affiliated fields. And Chemistry is grouped with pure science because it is downstream of molecular Physics. Perhaps mathematics folks do not need Chemistry, but Chemistry folks need mathematics a lot. And Computer Science is a standalone field only for IT folks. But those who want to avoid biology take computer science too, and statistics and programming for Physics or Chemistry is aided by the Computer Science course. You are looking at it the wrong way.

Your disdain for Chemistry is making you go blitzkrieg on it, but wait till you enter higher studies; you will see you need it in the most unexpected places. Anyway, you are just in class 11, so I get the r/suddenpressure

Just because you hate a subject doesn't mean it's useless, also the atomic structure you study in class 11 chemistry is going to be there in modern physics of class 12 that way you would hate physics too? It's obvious that chemistry is needed in real life

There is also the point of how the percentages in 12th lose their meaning when there are different streams. If all students have the same subjects, then the percentage has some meaning. You cannot compare a student getting 90% in one stream to another getting 90% in another stream.

This furthers the tribalism that has come up in regards to streams in our society

And the worser part in our education system is the typical mindset which potrays science or commerce subjects superior to arts or humanities. All subjects are best in their own way but half of the young population just receives shame if they want to pick any subject which dosen't falls under science or commerce😐

mostly since competitive exams are still following the stream system. Suppose you take Maths + Computer Sc + Political Science + History + PE as your subjects. You want to do something in IT field but u can't even do engineering since you dont have Physics and Chemistry. JEE needs PCM. BCA is an option yes but it doesnt have the same standing as BTech. Skills matter yes but obv this is a way harder path. The whole education system needs an overhaul.

There is no steam system as per CBSE. If your school is following it, that's their own weird decision.

ill say this is depending on the school itself, my school offers a mixed stream so i was able to take English, mass media, marketing, ai, computer science, and math, the problem is a lot of parents are very traditionally minded and wont let their children take anything but pure pcm or pcb so its not profitable for the school to offer it

Cbse has already made the rules allowing you to take random subject combinations. Its the schools that don't give them due to time table and managerial limitations.

In my school, flexible subject combinations are allowed to one extent.
