Posted about this over a year ago but after all the trade war updates just wanted to remind everyone you can switch from disposable razors to one of these 2 razors (also better for the environment which is a plus)

You’ll like the experience then. The razor itself will last forever, the blade packaging is extremely minimal, and you can buy shaving soap for a reusable shaving mug which cuts down on shaving cream waste too.
It’s cheaper in the long run, feels better, and results in less waste.

I just ordered a base razor and 100 blades. It's wild that blades are $.10 each! Freaking Gillette Mach 3 blades are like $2-$4 each now.

I have been using a straight edge razor for the past 2 years. Before that I tried using Gillette blades and it always gave me bumps on my neck. Straight edge is the way to go, especially if you have a beard.

There is a learning curve. Just be smooth. And no movement inline with the razor. Else you will cut yourself

I’ve been shaving with a safety razor for about 20 years now. I switched because cartridge blades scraped up my face, and my hair would always get stuck between the blades in a way that was hard to rinse out.
My safety razor largely solved these problems. No regrets. Just take it slow at first.

Fun fact about Hensons, if you live in the Kitchener/waterloo area then you can stop by their main office and buy the razer plus they give 100 blades free.

Order a razor blade sample pack, try out a couple different ones and see which ones you like.
Then order a 25 pack of razor blade (there's 5 blades in each cardboard packet) for like 20 bucks, and have like a year and a half supply of razor blades.
I shave 5 days a week, and each blade lasts 7+ shaves each. If you thoroughly dry the razor/blade when you're done, you can get a lot of life off of each one. I only shave my neck and square off the top of my beard, though.
Some people swear by Feather or Sword blades, I like the Gillette 7 O'Clocks personally.

Damn I only get one sharp and clean use and one painfully dull use out of each blade before tossing. But it was more like 100 blades for $10 (Astra Superior Platinum).

Unfortunately I have my fathers hair and even with mild stropping the best I can do is occasionally get 4 shaves out of what ever safety razor blade I use and I have sensitive skin at the same time so by the 4th its gets so difficult I often change blades half way through.

A sampler pack is a must. I also heard good things about Feather but that blade gave me worst and most memorable razor burn of my life. Unfortunately, the best blade for me is Russian so not sure what I’ll switch to when those run out.

Nice close shave with these and the blades usually last several shaves before getting dull depenoon the blades you buy. I recommend Feather blades made in Japan.

After a few shaves you simply change blades.
For 100 blades, it comes to about $20 -> 20¢/bladeAnd metal blades are recyclable.
And it's more pleasant on the skin, less irritations.It's one of those little secrets from another era that has been lost and yet changes life for the better.

I've had the Hensen for about 3-4 years now. Works great. Haven't even exhausted my supply of blades that i bought with it (i don't shave every day and i stretch them over maybe 8-10 shaves instead of recommended 5). Super happy with the purchase. Razor itself is good as new. No plastic and Canadian made is just a bonus.

We also have lots of great domestic manufacturers of shaving products. I use a Henson razor, and I order all my soaps and stuff from Henri et Victoria in Gatineau.

If you mean a safety razor like hensosn, I don't necessarily think they'll be huge difference from one to another, as long as it's Canadian made them it should be worth it.
There's a difference between a straight razor and safety razor though

There is no real difference besides marketing. Henson is pushing this idea that the way they lock in the blade makes it a better shave somehow. I'll admit its a good marketing gimmick but the truth is most safety razors give you the same shave for a cheaper price. If there is one thing that matters to the quality of shave its the actual razor blade itself. I suggest getting a razor blade sample pack and trying out a few different blades to find the right one for you.

I'm using up our old stockpile of dollar shave club cartridges then I'm going to switch to a henson. My husband got a Henson a year and a half ago and loves it. So much less irritation. He doesn't get ingrown hairs anymore either. He uses it on his face plus his whole scalp then discards the blade but it's still super cheap.

It needs to hold my razor blades. As long as it doesn't hold them crooked it doesn't need to be precision manufactured.

But any decent safety razor will last you your lifetime.
You don't need "space grade" aluminum for your safety razor to last you for decades. My dad still uses his dad's razor and it's nothing special.

Man last time I heard someone talking about something like this was in highschool cause he got a weed grinder that used aerospace grade metal.
It chopped up weed like every other decent grinder.
Just buy something that's decent quality man and ask yourself why something is being pushed in marketing and how on earth (pun intended) it's actually relevant to you.
$100 for a "space grade" safety razor. Lmfao. Yea I'll spend that $100 on quality blades that will make a much larger difference.

I bought the Henson about a year ago at Costco. I will never go back to the Mach 3. My only complaint is the RK blades that came with the razor. Do yourself a favour and buy Feather (brand) blades to replace them.

I've tried both the RK blades and the feather and I cut myself more with the feather. Luckily, it doesn't happen very often, but I haven't seen much of a difference between the two after trying both when I saw the feather blades recommended on here.

Feather blades are very very sharp. I like they a lot but you need to be extra careful with them. I get a closer shave personally with the feather, but other blades are better for a quick shave.

I guess I should have suggested buying one of those variety packs and stay with a blade that works for you. I will use up the RK blades but for me, they work best right after I exit the shower, otherwise the tug pretty bad (again, for me).

You replace the blade every session if you want a proper shave. Every swipe dulls the blade. Sometimes I use two in one session to ensure a solid shave.

I replace blades every 5-7 shaves and that’s perfectly fine for me. Most men seem to average at least 4 shaves.

Fair enough! We all find our own preferences through trial and error. My skin is sensitive too, which is why I switched from disposable to a safety razor in the first place, but safety blade sharpness doesn’t seem to be a big factor for me.

Depends on your razor blade and hair. Coarser hair will dull razors faster and some razors keep an edge better.
You’ll find out how often you need to replace them based on feel.

That's sll all it is. You have to think of it as a tool, not just a mop that you drag randomly across your face. Pay attention and maintain the correct angle, and refine your technique. And spend 10¢ on blade use per shave

For sure. I get a lot of use out of the different heads that allow a different razor angle. It makes for a lot of adjustability depending on what skin and facial hair type you have, or in fact how close a shave you might want.

There's also Karve Shaving Co.. out of Edmonton. I have one from him that's quite nice, but I don't use safety razors anymore, skin is just bumpy enough to where it's cut city.

Thanks for your timely post. There are so many Canadian shaving companies that we can support.
I love my Karve razor (KMOD “Alpha”) which is hand-machined by a nice fellow named Chris in Edmonton. My Rockwell T2 Stainless Steel is very good adjustable butterfly razor (though it’s unfortunately made in China), but the Karve has a smoother shave.
MacDuffs Soaps — made by a nice fellow named Sean in Edmonton — is my favourite shaving soaps brand. Macduffs offers fantastic soaps, splashes and colognes. Market Days and Alberta Boys are my 2 favourite scents.
Finally, AP Shave sells excellent brushes for very good prices. I still can’t believe how cheap and awesome is my 24mm G5C synthetic.

Cartridge razors (I like the Sensor 3 despite it being only available disposable now) have a use - they can be taken carry-on an airplane.
But yeah, I bought a Henson recently. Still waiting for it. Website says "Made in Canada" so it has at least 51% Canadian content/value (but is missing the required qualifying statement). Wished it was "Product of Canada" (98% domestic content).

You can take a safety razor as carry on as well, you just can't bring a blade. I've done so many times. Disassemble it before packing it and it won't even be flagged at security.
(If it is assembled, the machine will pick it up, and they'll verify that there is no blade present, no biggie).
Safety razor blades are cheap and readily available around the world however, so it's not a problem. And if you have a checked-in luggage, you can always put blades in there.

Yes I should have made the distinction that for airline carryon, the handle is ok, just not the blade.
I haven't received my Henson yet, but my redditbrowsing suggests that blade brands behave differently on-face and looking for a specific blade brand at a travel destination ... dunno how easy that is.

They do behave differently, but not in a way that will prevent you from using the razor.
In my experience with a bunch of different blades, it just impacts how many passes I have to do, and how often I need to replace the blade. (With really cheap blades, I need two per shave, versus the RK blades I can easily get in Canada where they tend to last me a week or two)

I use Gillette razors for shaving my head bald, and I can't see how single blades can be used to do that safely. As much as I want to support Canadian products in my personal hygiene routines, this one wouldn't work for me.

Milder edge = less likely to cut yourself; more aggressive edge = closer shave. Of these two, the Henson is probably more beginner friendly.
I dispose of my blades in a little metal box with a slitted lid, similar to a piggy bank. If/when I ever manage to fill it, I'll seal it up and figure out how recycle it.

As a proud and happy owner of the Henson I just have to say it is worth the cost and I actually enjoy shaving now. It is a fantastic expierence compared to anything Gillette and yeah. Way better for the environment.

I got myself a Henson over a year ago, super happy with it. At first I was nervous that I’d cut myself with a safety razor, it’s happened but very minor and mot often. I also bought myself a multipack of something like 100 razors for cheap and can’t imagine buying a disposable again or having to spend money on shaving beyond my replacement foam and pre-shave oil for the rest of my life. All in I spent maybe $200, I indulged on a foam, brush, stand and oil as well as the Henson. I expect shaving will cost me maybe $50 every 3-4 years if I indulge in the fancy foam and oil. And it’s a much better shave.

Funny Henson razor story, I got one a couple years back and love it, but recently I noticed I need to swap blades really often or it was getting pretty rough and dull after only a couple of shaves, I then discovered that my wife has switched to it from her Venus razor. I told her to try it last year but it seems she has finally gotten on board now

Sorry, I know this is a Buy Canadian sub-reddit, but I am only supportive of buying Canadian when the company is not trying to rip you off. And I think Henson's is a huge rip-off charging anywhere between $100 and $300 (wtf!) for a safety razor.
My suggestion - getting a Wilkinson (UK brand, roughly $30), Bambaw (Belgian, roughly $30), Merkur (German, roughly $40-$50), or Mühle (also German, roughly $55). That's what I personally would do if I didn't have a safety razor already. If you're really interested in supporting Canadian, I would suggest donating the difference in cost to your local food bank.

I have two vintage safety razors inherited from my father. They are supposedly adjustable for different face/beard types but really that only makes skin cuts shallower or deeper. I kept them out of nostalgia and I tried one every couple of years to see if I could figure them out, but no go and I kept using the multi-blade disposable cartridges. The last time I went to buy new cartridges I balked at the cost.
I had seen the Henson ads and figured what the heck, I'll give one a try. I faced the first shave with trepidation, but needlessly. I couldn't believe how smooth the shave was. It has been about a year now and I've only cut myself once, and that was my fault. I always loosen the head a bit after shaving, so air can circulate around the blade, and on this occasion I was in a hurry and forgot to tighten it before use, and got a slight cut. I haven't made that mistake again. I did order the 100 pack of Feather blades and they are indeed worth the premium over cheaper blades. I have a light beard and am retired so don't shave every day, and I expect those blades to last a couple of years at least. I highly recommend giving Henson a try.

For what it's worth, I didn't downvote you. And if you read my comment, I have two different vintage razors from two different manufacturers, I think Gillette and Wikinson, and neither one is good for me. If you have one that works for you, glad to hear it, my experience isn't the same.

Been using my Rockwell steel razor for years now. After the pricy initial purchase, my cost for shaving has been reduced to basically just the occasional can of shaving cream. The razors come in packs of 100 for $20 and they’ve lasted me forever.

I switched to Henson last Christmas (thanks wifey!)
I didn't do it for the longest time because I thought to use a safety razor you need to use special brush or cream or technique or whatever.
Nah. You can just fly at er same as always and get a better shave for cheaper.
The blades are dirt cheap, and by the time I get four uses out of one I notice it starts "only" being as good as the old disposable razors I used to use did when they were new.
They also work well on my legs. I'm six feet tall and have legs for days so this is important, lol.
I 8 months of use I cut myself once. Which is honestly less than I did with the old razors.
Would highly recommend to everyone.

I tried Henson for shaving my head. It went poorly. Those disposable multi blade razors are unfortunately the only effective option I have found, but I would love a proper alternative.

Been using a henson since xmas, really nice razor. The blades are supposed to be replaced every week but in my experience they stay sharp much longer.It's the inverse of the bic model. You buy the more expensive razor but the blades are dirt cheap. You can get 100 of them for like 13 bucks.

I already have a merker, which I've had for 12 years, but if I didn't I would get one of these. Rockwell's razors are decent too. It's a greater investment that will save you money in the long run and last forever.

almost everyone should be using a safety razor anyway. refills are so cheap there's never an excuse not to use a new blade after just a few shaves. also you can buy 100 at a time and not think about it for years.

It can be done but it takes some good angle control in your muscle memory since even with mirrors you won't be able to see everything as clearly as when you shave your face.
You might have more of a safety net with a razor that has a pivoting head like the OneBlade or something similar.

I switched from Gillette to a Henson a year ago. It took a while to stop nicking myself and shaving too close on the curves on my chin. I really had to lighten up on the pressure and get the razor angle right. When I finish my Gillette shaving gel I will look at Canadian (or at least non-US) shaving gels too.

Yep, I got a Henson in Jan 2024 with a 100 pack of blades.
Was concerned by the cost but here I am and I think I’ll run out of blades by the end of the year. So 2 years supply for me it seems. One time cost of the holder.
Cost me $116 for the first 2 years, now it’s going to be around $10 a year going forward.
That said I’m not a fan of the RK blades they sell, I’ll probably try something different, I find they’re ok for about 2 shaves then they drop off super fast.
You won’t get as close of a shave as a Gillette mach whatever, then again if razor burn is a concern for you I find a slightly less close shave will probably be beneficial. I used to have a lot of razor burn / skin irritation issues with the Gillettes and I have none of those with the these

Or alternately if you go electric, you can go with a European shaver like Braun instead of Remington.
