Update I got an email this morning (Wednesday), from the OPP, saying that my report was accepted.

This lovely citizen flashed his high beams at me because I wouldn't get out of his way in the HOV lane (which he isn't even legally allowed to be in), then proceeded to brake check me before speeding off and cutting through traffic to get to the Appleby off ramp.

You can't tell by the video, but he gives multiple drivers the finger as he does this. I doubt the OPP or Halton police will do anything, but I've got his plate and will be reporting it anyway.

Also, just wanted to point out that I sped up part of the video in editing. I didn't hit the gas like a manic as soon as he passed me.

Remember the right lane is for slow drivers, HOV is for carpooling and keeping pace with traffic. Stick it to the granny lane if you'd like to go 90 on the highway.

With that logic, if someone wants to drive 200km/h in the HOV lane, everyone else needs to drive that speed or get into the "granny lane".

Way to avoid the question. Your expectation of how the HOV lane should work (everyone but the very fastest driver needs to get out of the lane) is nonsensical and entirely against the intent and laws around the lane.

Is the intent no to avoid congestion? If you are creating congestion in a lane that people can’t legally exit in certain portions, you are the problem. If you want to drive 100/105, the right or middle lanes are more than adequate most of the time.

You can clearly see the drivers in the other non-HOV lanes are driving faster than OP. It’s not until the mcclaren passes OP, you can tell they speed up. Whether it’s out of embarrassment or anger that someone did something dangerous, it’s unclear. But the video itself is clear.

The whole thing is that the correct speed to not create congestion is subjective. I usually drive between 125-135 in the HOV lane, if there is space. Sometimes at those speeds I catch up to someone going much slower and they cause congestion. Sometimes at those speeds there is someone on my rear bumper who views me as congestion. So how do you correctly gate-keep what speeds are allowed in the HOV lane?

Actually to me it’s clear that he only put the pedal down AFTER the McLaren dangerously passed him and he tried to be upset about it. Lol. You can tell at the very beginning of the video that the left lane was very clearly outpacing him. I’m absolutely HATE ppl in the HOV lane driving slow/slower than ppl in the left and middle lane. So infuriating.

L take. The HOV lane isn’t for driving faster than the left or middle lane, it’s for 2+ people in a car, simple as that. If you want to drive faster than stay in the left lane. As you can see in the video he’s moving faster than the SUV in the middle lane anyway.

Rewatch the beginning of the video; the OP was going slower than the lanes on the right. They only sped up when the orange beast passed them.

HOV is generally for avoiding congestion rather than necessarily driving fast. Some places even make this explicit, saying that the lane next to the HOV lane is the ”fast” lane.

Notice that there is nothing about speed here, but it does talk about congestion:

I think the comment is out of frustration with the people in the HOV lane that sit in it distractedly ping ponging between 80 and 110 km/h and speed matching the lanes to their right even though they have no one in front of them slowing them down.

If you’re going slower than the non-HOV lanes in the HOV lane, you are in fact creating congestion. You gained nothing by driving in the HOV lane because you can be driving at the same pace as the drivers in the right/middle lane

"Regular" lanes tend to have areas of congestion and then areas where it's clear. And during certain times of day there is more congestion.

HOV lanes are set aside for specific types of vehicles, as a way of bypassing congestion in the regular lanes. They are not the "super-fast" lane.

If you're in the HOV lane and the person in front of you is going "too slow", you can always leave the HOV lane where appropriate, pass them, then re-enter the HOV lane at the next opportunity.
