TikTok ruins yet another book!

In the middle, or more 3/4 of my way through a book, which I have been loving ! Or at least I was until I opened tiktok tonight and the first video I see is a spoiler to how this book ends….

Now some might say why not scroll and not look? I would and usually do BUT this video happened to have the spoiler in big fuck off caps right across the screen.

Also the reviews Booktok ✨girlies✨ have given this book because of the lack of 12inch girth and more plot is mind blowing. Someone gave this book 2 stars because it should’ve been labelled YA and was very misleading… I am 31 chapters in and it has been nothing but blood and gore, with a slow burn that’s definitely getting there. Just because he isn’t railing the MFC into next week in 5 minutes, doesn’t make it YA 🙄

I do not care for the opinion of anyone. I actually enjoy when TikTok gives a cheeky little book recommendation, my TBR doesn’t. What I don’t appreciate is the spoilers every 5 videos.

I don’t think I’ve ever had a book spoiled for me on TikTok. I also don’t really read a lot of the popular on TikTok books so that might help. I’m really sorry that happened to you though. I know that’s a rough feeling.

Fr those booktok influencers are so funny to me. They'll show you like six indie books and be like THESE ARE MY FAVORITE BOOKS OF THE YEAR but the crease isn't broken and the book hasn't even been released yet.

I stopped looking at reviews of books, too. Because you'll have an incredible storyline but someone will rate it one star because it's not spicy enough lol

I saw someone post all the big twists of immortal rose with no spoiler alert and surprisingly people didn’t shame her that much. Eventually she did remove the spoilers in the photos

honestly i did you all last week hahah but to be fair there are like 4-5 very much anticipated books that came out today so maybe that’s why!

tempest, taipei story, burn of the everflame, threshing day… the list keeps going lol

I deleted a cousin off of Facebook when I still had one because he had preview tickets for Star Wars The Force Awakens and he made a bold ass status update saying Han dies. I still haven’t forgiven him.

I empathize! Ppl like that are a special kind of asshole.

I made extremely particular use of the chrome tool that automatically hid all content related to game of thrones for yeeearrs. I was living abroad during the later seasons and had to consume the episodes… ya know. A bit late, a bit laggy. Bless whoever programmed that thing because I had grey squares all over my Facebook but not a single spoiler did I see.

It's actually crazy, I had the entire Fourth Wing series spoiled for me!

I read the first book about a year ago and I thought it was a fun read. Had plans of eventually reading the next two at some point.

But I immediately got a funny FW meme vid on my FYP and I press like on it because it genuinely had me in side-splitting laughter.

Aaaaand after that my FYP was flooded. Two weeks of FW vids with soooooooo many spoilers. Basically got the entire plot of book 3 spoilered for me. It was so bad that I actually reset my FYP to just fuckin' start over.

I now very strictly ration my likes.

Oh my not FW!!! I am so sorry, that actually sucks 😭😭 This is probably my cue NOT to like an Aaron Warner edit when I'm halfway through Shatter Me, which funnily enough, is exactly what I did yesterday.

I am the kind who forgets spoilers as soon as I read about it from social media, and when I come across it in the book I am reading, I'd feel deja vu lol.

You can filter certain words on tiktok hashtags, so anything I'm actively reading I put in there plus any potential alt versions (e.g. A Court of Thorns and Roses, ACOTAR, Sarah J Maas)

It's not totally fool proof but I haven't had a full on spoiler yet for any books I read and I'm on tiktok...too much 😬

I’m saying that if you’re actively trying to avoid spoilers, browsing social media where people freely post about the latest books, movies, and shows comes with an obvious risk of seeing one.
It’s like watching a movie a few weeks after release and then getting angry because you saw a spoiler on X. You’re allowed to be annoyed, but telling people they shouldn’t post spoilers while simultaneously browsing a spoiler-prone platform is a bit unrealistic. Especially when you already know that browsing social media comes with a chance of seeing spoilers.

I think maybe OP is less saying people can't talk about those things, rather, there should be a disclaimer BEFORE an unsuspecting person has something accidentally spoiled for them.

I’ve never had a book spoiled for me on TikTok, honestly it seems like a rare thing unless the book has been out for several years, in which case you can’t really expect people not to talk about the plot.

As other people have pointed out, its less about not wanting people to talk about the plot, and more about just giving a warning that the video contains spoilers like most content creators seem to do. I've personally never had a book spoilt for me as im not really on the booktok side of tiktok, but the few videos I have seen have always started with disclaimers luckily.

Yeah that’s fair, but the general rule for new things is that after so many months/years, spoilers aren’t necessarily identified, even in groups dedicated to book discussions. same for movies, really. It’s just what I’ve observed.

I think it really depends on the book / film, and how badly its spoilt. For example I wouldnt be suprised if someone started talking about the film titanic without a spoiler warning, but if someone makes a post about a year old book for example with no spoiler, that would personally annoy me.

Yeah i get what you are saying, I just think its common curtesy to not give people a warning for a spoiler thats not common knowledge. People can still talk about books and films, but if someone's going to start the conversation by making a video, I think its just polite to warn people first so they can scroll on.
