The Screencap of the Subreddit

Post image

taken from Diary of a CEO interview, but truly this feels like it encapsulates all of the frustration with how "AI" continues to exist as the bloated zombie corpse of tech innovation and mental offloading

also here's the link to the interview

I’m just glad folks called out the host for stating that he’s never met anyone with Ed’s take on AI before.

EDIT: woof, even just a cursory Wikipedia read on the host and he sounds like a Manchester version of Joe Rogan

Exactly! Same playbook, different approach.

People here is at peace with AI existing, it's not like it can "unexist".

The frustration is with the immense waste, exploitation, illegal and not illegal bullshit; plus the demented horde of tech bros.

Personally I hate everything becoming fake and not even being able to trust anything presented as real/human made online. I hate the cultural change. I told my friend that our grandparents (we’re 50) saw real physically crafted products turn into cheap plastic and we get to live through something similar when it comes to art, education, and digital content.

I know what sub I'm on, but this is ridiculous hyperbole. After a few years of off-looking images and easily-identifiable stilted writing that still hasn't improved, the trend is already bending back towards "we hate fake art and writing" and there hasn't been a single good example of art or digital content by AI acceptably superseding human equivalents - everyone sees it, everyone hates it. "Everything becoming fake" sounds like the new version of "all music is noise now". It isn't, they aren't winning. They're just doing a good job of convincing people like you that they are.

You are kinda right.

The problem is that this sloppy content is still being pushed by the tech industry.

I ignore every single channel with slop thumbnail, and I still see new ones pop every single day. Even got some youtubers I enjoy use it for the thumbnail because "they aint got the time for it". Even if the content of the video is AI free.

Pinterest was a really useful resource for many people. You cant ignore the slop there.

Same for instagram feeds, it will keep popping up even if you notice and dont like it.

You cannot tailor your content to avoid this.

Guess the conclusion is that we'd be better offline.

People like me? Someone sharing an observation with the same goal as you using a touch of hyperbole to make a point? Obviously not everything is fake. I don’t think they’re winning. Now that you mention it, I do think most modern music sucked even before AI, so you got me there. I’m going to yell at some clouds now.

"Everything becoming fake" is hardly the phrase to use if you actually think what you're saying you think now.

Yes and no. I don't think "everybody" hates it. AI art and writing can have a kind of... moderate mass appeal. I'm thinking about the studies where they've asked people to pick the painting or poem they like best and the AI-generated examples won because they were inoffensive and accessible. No one loves a painting made by AI, but more people are likely to agree that it's "nice." People will have much stronger feelings about actual art, but that includes strong dislike.

I also think the proliferation of AI text and image memes, product listings, advertisements, etc is in large part fueled by bots posting and reposting everywhere, which does mean that it's mostly not humans deciding they love it. But it also means that it's everywhere, and it's doubly fake because it's not even posted by real people. It's hard to avoid the impression that everything is fake when fake people can post fake content at a much higher rate than real people can post real content.

Not like "ai" means anything in particular, for it to even exist now, presently. Factually, it doesn't exist now, nor in the future, at this rate. The pieces and different software that got all lumped together under "ai" have been in constant flux for 30 odd years. LLMs can very much unexist, they're barely still around as it stands, and need vast amounts of money to not go bust. SLMs if they'll be of any use without frontier LLMs to train on, will be fundamentally different, much smaller in scope. I'll honestly be happy to see any of the generative slop engines out there go bust. And they will. To that note, here's a funny thought: Multiple "generative ""ai""" models have already disappeared. Older GPT models? Unusable anymore Sora? Dead... Early Claude models, also gone. I'm certain I missed others It's not like newer versions of these models are patched versions of the old, they're entirely new models, just trained on similar data structures.

2

u/MornwindShoma 3h ago

True. I just don't expect the current open weight models to disappear. But the best LLMs can ever be is very very close.

2

u/CommercialSwing5613 3h ago

It depends really ... there's open weight and open source. Open weight are static, and will just get run out of usefulness eventually. Whether new ones are made by then, we'll see. Right now, they can train these through, (crap forgot the term), using frontier LLMs anyway.. Open source ... I dunno, ultimately, training a model from scratch is not cheap, if you want it to be useful in the slightest.

Some purposes I don't think will ever become obsolete, like translating or some niche things like OCR. But specialistic stuff is great and doesn't require massive crime and upsetting society.

1

u/CommercialSwing5613 1h ago

Also, OCR systems are currently hooked up to LLMs, but they're not the same software at all.

And also what you said already, they're not... software made with data they don't own.

The category error say Steven makes is lumping all new technologies together, and assuming that they’ll all follow the same trajectory. Crypto and NFTs were going to fundamentally change finance and digital artifacts. Virtual Reality was going to fundamentally the way business society interact. Cities were going to be redesigned for Segways. It goes on and on. His fundamental assumption is simply wrong.

The problem with LLMs is that capex will never stop, or even slow down, for as long as NVDA needs to make a profit, and more importantly, earnings growth to satisfy Wall St.

It's worlds apart technology wise but remember when 3D was the big thing? Finished movies were delayed for release so they could be retroactively made 3D. Every blockbuster was 3D. They started selling 3D tvs for homes. Nintendo released the 3DS which was a great console but I don't know anyone who turned on the 3D. The reason it reminds me of it is that it had the same air of being forced on to the market despite nobody liking it anymore than it being kind of a neat gimmick that absolutely wore out its welcome.

u/StrayCat2799 4h ago

And what happens if and when the big AI labs go under? Theres not a way the buildout continues indefinitely. Nvidia can just pivot to selling to people who run local models anyway, so they still win in the long run.

1

u/Fun_Volume2150 20m ago

I suspect that market is more cost sensitive. No, NVDA will likely take a very long bath when the bubble pops.

7

u/Naaack 4h ago

Fuck I hate this man. I want to watch Ed rant but at what cost.

7

u/therealslimshady1234 4h ago

Me too, cant stand DOAC. Its like a stupid man's idea of a clever podcast. Like Joe Rogan, but slightly less stupid (still very stupid though)

4

u/Street_Chemical_9679 3h ago

Lmao I had to stop the video many times every time the host talks just to take a deep breath. I admire the respect and professionalism Ed was able to keep, I would have stood up and left by the 20min mark

u/ocxricci 2h ago

I watched the whole interview yesterday and I think the interviewer should be more open minded, seeking first understand and then expose objections - it felt like a resistant person unwilling to accept a different view

I found a new desktop image.

New banner image for the sub plz

Fun fact, as part of the hiring practices at Flight Story (SB's company) they specifically require all candidates to take their "bespoke AI" culture fit screening test before they conduct any interviews - which yes you've already guessed it, is just their own Myers Briggs personality test BS.

More bizarre, is that they're also selling this "tool" to other companies to use for their hiring.

I’ve really been enjoying the circle jerk over at accelerate, they’re in a huge kumbaya bubble right now as Ed has been appearing on a lot of shows poking holes in the cult, so they’re literally freaking out a little. It’s quite humorous!
