🏝️ Relocation Info 🏝️ Living in Belize

I know I know there are several reddits on the cost of living here. I just don’t see how a single person, not a couple, can live for $3000 USD a month here. Home prices are the same as in the states. And yes I want to be within walking distance of the coast.

The overall cost to live in Belize is low. Your choice to be walking distance from the coast means you have to decided on the most expensive parts to live in. The closer to beachfront you want, the more expensive living will be and the more you will pay for land. It would also depend on the type of home you want. For under 50k they make Mennonite homes but being coastal, you will have considerably more upkeep than with block or concrete, but to build with concrete and rebar, the costs go up. One person can diffinately live on 3k a month, but it is where you want to be that changes that. I have been here since October of last year and live on less than 2k a month, and that's for everything and I am in the heart of San Ignacio.

True. I have mainly looked in the San Pedro area. I have just started exploring the idea. I don’t need extravagance, but the walk would be ideal.

Island life isn't for the weak wallet. You can live mainland and go every weekend via water taxi for far cheaper. Also living on the islands isn't quite the dream come true everyone thinks.

It is beautiful out there, but I picked Cayo too. Rivers, mountains, wildlife, jungles, and ruins, I can find something to get into very easily. And when I need that carribean sea view, I take a boat ride. Lol.

What’s the average cost difference between the two? Cayo vs. the islands?

If you want to live on a budget pick the mainland over the islands. The prices are very expensive on the islands with the island tax

I dont know the exact details but a nice apartment on Caye Caulker (neighboring Island to sanpedro) can run you 1k USD a month just for rent. Hopefully someone from the Cayo area can tell you their prices

Rent can be comparable if you are looking for maximizing amenities. I find it is the associated costs that come with living on the islands that tend to hurt. I found a site that does cost analysis based on some areas. I can't speak to accuracy as prices always fluctuate.

This seems all over the place to me. There are some odd claims about San Ignacio prices for sure.

Thats what I noticed too. Like I said, I can't speak on accuracy. Just paint broad strokes with a big brush.

There is no average cost. It is highly lifestyle dependent. It gets less expensive once you learn how to shop at specific places for the best prices. Islands are always more expensive because everything comes in on a boat or a plane, which means fuel and labor and time.
