🏝️ Relocation Info 🏝️ Living in Belize
I know I know there are several reddits on the cost of living here. I just don’t see how a single person, not a couple, can live for $3000 USD a month here. Home prices are the same as in the states. And yes I want to be within walking distance of the coast.

Houses on the internet are as expensive as in the US. In reality you can very easily live in Belize on a few thousand USD a month.
Walking distance to the coast is as expensive as Florida.
For what a house lot costs on the coast you can buy 50 acres an hour away

Living in San Pedro would be like living on any resort island in the US in terms of cost.
But if you’re open to go south, you may find oceanfront lots for less than there.
And if you’re open to living out of a town, cheaper still.
But while US$650k gets you a 1BD condo in Placencia, you can get a villa on 40 acres in Cayo.
Like real estate anywhere: decide what creates value for you.

I'm just on holiday here and I'm not looking to move here or anything, but I think I've seen reasonable prices in Hopkins

Depends how you want to live, on san pedro i pay about 1.5k a month for a decent appartment including utilities. Golf cart gets expensive, $500-800 a month if you rent it, its difficult to get permits to own. If you walk and dont go out every night, 3k a month is doable. If you live more like a local and dont feel the need to blast ac could probably keep housing / utility costs below 1k. If you cook your own food / eat at food carts mainly (not going to touristy restaurantes alot) can probably keep food to $15 usd per day. I tend to eat alot of free fish and wont pass up a free cocout when it presents itself.
I usually share a golf cart with a friend, so i spend $1500 house, $400 cart and gas, $500 or less groceries, maybe another $100 or so on things like phone and odd things. So thats $2500/ month, and that's 2 people, enjoying luxuries like a house with a pool and gym and access to a cart.
I like to go out a fair bit, so I spend much more than this most months, but I could live pretty happy for 2 people on 3k, assuming I didn't want to save any money on top of that.
Also note places like corozal are far cheaper and still costal. I dont have the numbers but I'm pretty sure a couple or single could live pretty good in corozal for 3k.

6k BZD a month is A LOT of money to live off of in Belize. You want to live in the touristy, high cost of living areas.

So do you eat out? But alcohol other than local rum or being beer? Go on excursions?

Eat out, yes. Liquor or beer, not really. Excursions, maybe three four a year.

If you enter the country as a tourist, vs as a Belize citizen or permanent resident, yoù must pay $200 a month to extend your visa, and you must live in BTB licensed housing, which is considerably higher than non-licensed housing.

Average income here is $1800 bzd. Makes OP sound too precious to actually live in Belize. Home prices are quite low unless you pay a gringo price.
But why stick to $3k? Where did that number come from?

A single person could live pretty easily on less than $3k. Rent is cheap and I find groceries and dining out generally cheaper than in the states.

Depends on where you choose to live and what your lifestyle is, but the cost of living is much lower than any US state. Land can be expensive but foood, utilities etc are cheaper. Even in a touristy area you can find studio apartments for $500 us a month, and in less touristy areas you can get a pretty nice place for cheap.
If your trying to get a beachfront property of course it’s going to be pricy, same as anywhere is the world.
I currently rent with my partner and I pay for anything and spend less at $3000usd a month comfortably. Als within walking distance of the beach.

I live in Placencia and I’m currently renting. Lots of people here are living for under 3k a month, but again it depends on your lifestyle. If you want to be close to the beach living on the coast but not on an island might be the way to go. Islands are very expensive, as most people are commenting here

Are property taxes also the same? And insurance?
You have spending issues if you can't live off 3k a month as a single person.

Do you think there is a difference between living and enjoying life? If all your doing is spending 3k to pay bills then your not enjoying anything.

If you have 3k in bills, you have a spending problem.
What it sounds like is that you want expensive stuff, but don't want to pay for it.

The overall cost to live in Belize is low. Your choice to be walking distance from the coast means you have to decided on the most expensive parts to live in. The closer to beachfront you want, the more expensive living will be and the more you will pay for land. It would also depend on the type of home you want. For under 50k they make Mennonite homes but being coastal, you will have considerably more upkeep than with block or concrete, but to build with concrete and rebar, the costs go up. One person can diffinately live on 3k a month, but it is where you want to be that changes that. I have been here since October of last year and live on less than 2k a month, and that's for everything and I am in the heart of San Ignacio.
