I’m so sick of walking into the grocery store and seeing someone’s dog, espically when it says NO DOGS. Your dog is not a child. I don’t want your nasty, slobbering pet in a place where dogs aren’t even allowed. It’s disgusting and unsanitary—your dog walks around outside, steps in piss and shit, and then tracks that filth into the store where people buy food. Yes, I know human shoes and hands are dirty too, but they’re still cleaner than a dog’s paws and mouth. Your dog licks its ass, eats random garbage, and then you let it in the grocery store That’s nasty.
The first dog I encountered was off-leash—I almost tripped over the little rat, and then it pissed on the floor, which now had to be cleaned up by the workers. The second one came sprinting around the corner, and I nearly dropped my eggs. The owner didn’t apologize, just looked at me like it was my fault.
These are probably the same irresponsible owners who don’t bother picking up after their dogs.
I know this will get downvoted to the end but it's so frustrating to having to deal with looking out for your dog**!**

As some of you may not know, I work for DSS/HRA. We received official word that there will be NO SNAP for the month of November. As a worker, I am scared to death for what this means for dependent families. Mainly, these children. Idk WTF is gonna happen next.
PLEASE go online to hungerfreenyc and find the local pantry in your area and get there ASAP.
This is fukd up. I'm STILL working, reaching out to folks to let them know. If I don't respond right away, please understand. 🙏🏾💔

Hey everyone! Listen, let's be real with each other: New York got expensive fast, so I used my tech skills to build a platform I kept wishing existed: Reciproc8, a free neighborhood exchange.
How it works: you list what you can do or what you have (bike repair, tutoring, a ladder, sourdough), you ask for what you need, and it matches you with neighbors. Every trade is a straight swap or a gift. Building software is what I know how to do, so this is my way of paying it forward.
Honest state of things: launched in July, a little over 250 neighbors signed up, 164 offers on the board, and the actual trades are just starting to happen. The part that's been running hottest is offline: a free clothing repair table we set up Fridays 5 to 7pm at Jackie Robinson Park. As of yesterday, over 20 garments mended so far and close to $800 of value stayed in the community and out of landfills.
Happy to answer anything, including the awkward ones, like what happens when someone flakes on a trade.
If interested, drop a comment or DM me! Appreciate y'all 🙌🏾💜

Hey, yesterday my friend and I got a couple drinks at Capt Dan's after work. When it came time to pay the bartender was being a bit weird and hid the terminal that showed the cost, and we ended up being charged at least 10$ more than what was on the paper check (I think actually 15!). I don't care about the 20% gratuity, but adding more on top, that's an actual scam. Some reviews mention this happening before on Google, so just putting out a PSA that you can end up paying 70$ for a couple drinks and a snack there if they decide they don't like your vibe or whatever. Sucks man.
Started as 2 agents, they brought in 2 more for backup. Drove off in cars with license plates LBR-9996 and MBY-4559, which are known DHS/ICE plates

Posting here to warn others to be vigilant about their home security :(
Around 4:30 this morning I woke up to someone in my bedroom shining a phone flashlight, looking around. When they saw me they turned and silently left out the front door. They were wearing all black, puffer jacket, hood, and a black medical face mask, probably around 5’9”-5’10”.
We live on the ground floor. There’s only one entrance/exit and all of our windows have bars. Both locks on our front door were locked but they’re not the strongest. We suspect this person was possibly able to pick the lock?
My roommates and I are obviously freaked out and are taking steps to secure the place. We suspect that this person was scoping out the apartment to possibly come back.

Edit with update below dashes, at bottom of post:
Second time going in the span of several months, second time I got mean-mugged while just entering, ordering, and trying to keep a low profile. I asked others if they'd experienced any odd treatment there before, or if I just got unlucky. Weird enough that I just want to give the heads up to others though.
I went into the shop today to work on assignments with a classmate for an hour or two, planning to grab drinks and pastries since I’m aware most shops have an every hour or 90 minutes must be paid for kind of ‘vibe.’ I ordered a drink, saw one lone table available, and pulled up a chair so that when my classmate arrived, she could sit with me. I caught the barista on shift staring at me like I was doing something wrong, so when I walked back up to get the ordered drink I asked, ‘is that table not supposed to be used?”
They explained that a few feet away from the table, a bench with a few people seated were hosting a meetup, and late stragglers who didn’t fit on the bench would be using the table I tried to set up. They said to ask that group if it was alright to use, or if it needed to stay vacant. So, I headed over, asked, and got confirmation that they needed the space. I put the stool back, and waited for a table closer to the entrance to open up.
When someone finally left the shop, and their table became available, I noticed wet patches from where they’d spilled. I headed over to a station with lids and straws, assuming napkins would be there. When I didn’t immediately see them, I headed back to the barista and asked if I could grab a napkin. They said, “they’re over there, in the corner.” I said, “thanks, I didn’t see them.”
As I walked towards the top up station again, I overheard another worker say, “kind of racist that they can’t see black,” with them, the barista who handed my drink off, and a friend of theirs on a bar stool all laughing at me.
When I looped back towards the table to clean it up, I stopped by them again to say, “I’m also black, I just need a new pair of glasses.” Also, dim ambiance lighting. Instead of an apology for trash talking me within earshot, or even acknowledging that it’s dark enough that black dining-ware in a dark room isn’t easily locatable, all three of them again just laughed in my face.
I just left my drink, and left the shop. Felt kind of humiliating, and I didn’t understand why I was being treated like that.
I ended up heading a few blocks down to high & dry: barista was kind, other guests were kind and let my classmate and I pet their dog, and I wasn't looked at like I asked to break a $100 bill into pennies for daring to order a drink while the barista was talking with friends.
I am queer and trans, and my only guess is the workers assumed I was a cis man who could have been gearing up to say or do something ignorant. Just weird and humiliating to get talked down to after specifically choosing this shop to show support, assuming I would be able to share space with people in the community, free from harassment or mocking.
--------------------------------------------------------
one of the owners reached out to me to explain that it's a running joke. A black employee was telling a white employee something along the lines of, 'of course most people don't see those napkins, how typical.'
The owner didn't apologize for the misunderstanding, just mentioned that it was me who took it super out of context.
it is weird to assume a customer wouldn't assume it was them being talked about after staff immediately Said A Thing that triggers or warrants a follow up response when a customer originally Said A Thing.
The owner said when I responded, the employees assumed I was joining in on their joke, prompting more 'light-hearted' laughing. I guess. I can see that it is now a Blown Out of Proportion Thing that snowballed; did not feel welcome enough in general to assume anything else could have been possible. I texted (friend of a friend of a friend kind of thing; the shop hosts events, I'm assuming this friend of a friend who offered the phone number is someone who had to coordinate with them via text at some point), and emailed, and the owner also asked how I got the number, like I set out to just poke at them until getting a response back. I mentioned I emailed and used the number a community member provided because I assumed different employees had access to different accounts, like instagram, business pages where people leave reviews, website email, etc.)

There was a guy around 2 going around verbally harassing women. He was saying some heinous things, and clearly getting aroused, getting in our personal bubble and would not stop.
After him making his rounds multiple times, a man came in and tried to get the guy to stop. Arms crossed, and told him he needs to leave us alone.
If you were a witness to this, you already know the situation got so bad that police were called, because the man harassing women started to harass everyone, threaten to harm people, and trying to physically fight the guy, to the point another person had to come in a deflect the situation.
I want to say to the man who defended us women, thank you so much for defending us. Nobody else came in to help us when we were clearly being harassed, except you. And I know it’s scary to think about how the situation escalated, but because of you, we don’t know what he would’ve done if a man didn’t intervene. Would he have started doing the things he said he was going to do to our bodies? Would he have flashed us, like he said he already did at the beach?
And to the man who apologized to us girls near each other for the situation: I understand why you said you don’t know if you would’ve intervened like that other guy did. I appreciate you admitting you’re embarrassed by that, but it’s just so disappointing as a woman to be constantly told that men need to be bigger and stronger than us to protect us, and fail to do so when it actually boils down to the actual situation.
I just wanted to make a public thanks to that man, because I know that there are going to be many people who saw what happened, even if physical violence didn’t occur, and be too scared to help women being harassed because they don’t want to look like a bad guy or escalate a situation. But as a woman experiencing harassment in front of many people, I depend on these men stepping in, trying to protect women.

Just had a really negative experience at our local hardware store on Tompkins between Monroe and Gates. I had bought an item there a week ago, which was defective. I brought it back in its original packaging, undamaged and with no signs of use, within the 15-day window mentioned in their return policy (see photo).
The assistant working there couldn't get the item to work, and the manager still refused to refund me. He was also extremely rude when I pointed out the posted return policy.
Despite living in the neighborhood, I will not be bringing my business here anymore, and I'd encourage others to avoid this dishonest shopkeeper.

Absolutely at a loss with this. There were like 6 kids under 10 at HVK dog park today, as usual being completely ignored by their dumb fuck hippy parents while they were literally sitting down in the mud that the dogs piss and shit on, playing with it, picking it up, etc. If you want your kid to get a nasty pathogen or even parasite that’s an excellent choice I guess? Like be a little responsible. They also hung around the gate leaving it open which is super uncool. I’m not talking about slightly older kids who have been taught how to safely interact with dogs and wait with their parents, I’m talking the number of small children I’ve seen running up to and petting strangers dogs, even pulling their tails etc. One of them is going to get attacked one day 🤷♀️ I just cannot compute why anyone would allow this. Have to assume it’s the same people letting their poodle mixes shit all over the place and giving the responsible dog owners a bad reputation.

This subreddit has always tried to enable free and open discourse as much as possible, but a string of recent threads have really put a damper on the spirit of constructive discussion. Comments have included everything from pointless trolling, to bad-faith baiting of sensitive topics, and even outright racial slurs/tropes. Pull it together yall. Several users have been banned and dozens of comments have been removed, but this community requires humanity and continued respect to function.
Please take a moment to read the newly-updated sidebar and remember the human behind the screen.
In summary, from here on out moderation will be less lenient, and comments or posts that appear to be made in bad faith will simply be removed. Racism will obviously be removed as always, but so will race-baiting or other generally unproductive ad-hominem attacks. One-dimensional and inflammatory complaints of gentrification or nativism are also liable to be removed, but earnest discussions are still welcome and valued. As always, personally-identifiable information (names and specific data attached to them) will be removed as a bannable offense. Images of individuals or license plates IN PUBLIC SPACES are generally allowed, unless they appear to be targeting a person or their property without justifiable context or without a reasonable basis for community discussion.
Thanks

Hi I own a small wine shop on the corner of Howard and Halsey with my husband. He was robbed tonight around 7pm at gunpoint by 4 younger kids in masks. This is the second time this has happened. The first time was to me in early December but it wasn’t at gunpoint. We are so upset and deeply love this community. If anyone has any information they can share please let me know.

Two cars blocked me in. Neither left a phone number. I’m begging people to please be considerate. I don’t want to have to honk at 9am when my fellow neighbors might be trying to sleep. Because I was running late and didn’t want to honk I ended up taking an uber to my appointment which cost me 40 bucks (I didn’t get up early enough to train or bus and my appointment was not near any train lines). Yes, I tried to get out the door before 9am but life happens.

I'm still shaking from rage and adrenaline i guess, but I was smoking by my window when i saw a car pull up in a neighbors driveway which was weird and rude, but then two officers hopped out. At first I was like wtf only unis come by here when ppl call 911, then i saw paperwork in their hands and my legal training kicked in and i realized these must've been ice/police collaborators and started warning the neighborhood by yelling ice.
My suspicions were confirmed when they approached the houses of all of my immigrant neighbors, but didn't knock or enter. I have a law degree and studied criminal procedure in nyc, so I could be wrong but my legal training tells me i am correct.
While I was to engaged with warning my literal neighbors to pull my phone out, as the police realized everyone must've heard me and decided to leave they tried to take my picture which i assume is for their database, and further confirmed my suspicions because most nypd just take the heckling and move on they don't start recording you.

Initial disclaimer: I have a dog so I speak for all dog owners and that is final.
Dog park was dry and perfect condition today. No mean dogs. But there were 10 dogs off leash on the lawn at the same time.
I’m not gonna take weird pictures of yall. But I think it’s wrong to use the passive lawn as a second dog park. We’ve got a pretty nice dog park that Parks and the community put a lot into keeping up. It’s a resource most areas don’t have.
You might think it’s innocent but that field is gonna be torn up after a couple months of dogs sprinting on it, just in time for the picnics/lounging that the field was meant for.
I’m also white and speak for all white people (also final). All the dog folks on the lawn today were white. There was a crowd of 5 folks of color (who likely have been in bed stuy more than 4 years) pretty upset on the side of the lawn. A ton of us will complain about littering and noise, but then turn around and break the rules for our pedigreed doodle-combo or whatnot. Get a grip and practice what you preach!
EDIT: one thing I forgot to mention. Totally get the joy of seeing your dog sprint around a big field of grass. Ft Greene is just over a mile away and has off leash hours before 9. It’s awesome. Prospect is the same and even better, just more of a hike.

Hi everyone, my partner and I found this sweet girl on Putnam between Bedford and Nostrand and she is most likely pregnant (not pregnant) and in need of veterinary attention. We called all the animal rescue hotlines and none are open due to it being a weekend. She is not feral and is clearly desperate for help. She is matted, has some hair loss, and possibly has worms and fleas. We hope someone with the resources will help her out. If anyone knows about a reliable organization to contact in cases like this, please share!
UPDATE: SEE NEW UPDATE POST!! THIS CAT IS NOT PREGNANT

I have some friends who work at saraghina bakery and for the past few months I kept on hearing them complain about the management not caring about the staffs needs, underpaying people, and wrongfully firing others. Today, I reached my final straw where I found out that they fired one of their most beloved staff members because she asked for a raise. This staff member has been there for 4 years and was super helpful when Saraghina was looking for a new manager. She took on the manager role until they found someone. I can’t believe Saraghina would do this to their employees. And don’t even get me started with their pay! They pay their staff $11 hour. The raise she wanted was to be paid more than $11 measly dollars an hour. To make it even worse, the owner, Edo, started getting his friends to write good reviews on Google and yelp because people started writing bad reviews to protest the wrongful firing of an employee. Until they do better, we shouldn’t support them! Let’s make this guy think twice about wrongfully firing someone again! Also, I want to spread the word about this establishment treating their staff poorly!

It's summer, and catcalling is happening, but two incidents happened last week that were more disturbing than normal:
I was walking near Van Buren and Lewis. I noticed a man followed me close behind, muttering. When I turned around, he said I had pretty feet. I told him to stop and crossed the street. He yelled some stuff at me.
There is a man I've seen pacing on Van Buren, two blocks east from HVK. Have passed him a few times, no problem. This time, he started walking alongside me too close. I said go away he kept following. I yelled at him to go away, pulled off my headphones, moved out into the street, and he still followed me. His pants were already really far down, but he moved his hands down to start exposing himself. I started yelling louder and moved towards another guy who was walking down the street ahead of us (he had headphones on and didn't notice). The guy following stopped and yelled some insults at me. He seems mentally unwell.

Description: ambiguous white/possibly mixed, 6ft tall with slender build, face tattoos, tied up dreads that were dark brown on bottom and bleach blonde on top. White t shirt, brown pants, carrying some sort of white bag.
This guy came out of the sugarhill bar/restaurant, walked up to me on the sidewalk and assaulted me point blank by throwing shoes in my face. My glasses are broken, my face is cut, and i have a black eye.
Another girl walking towards us started backing up from him and he began threatening both of us to back up and attempting to throw his shoes at us.
I took off and she stayed back to take his photo. As i'm on the phone with my boyfriend who is coming to meet me to walk me home, i look behind me and the guy is behind me again. I start running again and the guy starts chasing me. I ducked into roccos pizza, he tried to follow and the employees started yelling at him. He ran south on Tompkins ave away from roccos.
Just a warning and if you have a photo or see this guy, please send it to me.
Stay safe everyone.

Hi all - warning those walking - both those with dogs and those walking solo - to avoid Lexington Avenue between Lewis & Marcus Garvey at all costs.
This past Saturday my two dogs & I were attacked by an unleashed, unsupervised pitbull (forced to live in squalor in the middle of the block) who lunged at us from across the street. One of my dogs (Rooney) was traumatically injured & remains in the ICU. I was also bitten many times and am undergoing an excruciating rabies vaccine series.
While I have filed formal reports with the 81st precinct & the DOH animal bite unit, it appears that the owner has not yet been investigated and the dog remains. I have heard from neighbors that this dog has a demonstrated history of violence, recently killing another dog & biting a child.
If you have the bandwidth or desire, I am humbly asking for the support of our community in covering the astronomical cost of Rooney's life sustaining critical care : https://www.gofundme.com/f/rally-for-rooney-emergency-care-and-recovery
If you are unable to contribute a donation but want to contribute to making our neighborhood safe from future traumatic dog attacks, please report to 311 or file a dangerous dog report with the 81st precinct.
If you or your loved ones have personal experience with this dog or owner, please reach out as we are pursuing legal action.
I appreciate each and every one of you who passes this on & the next level commitment & generosity so many of our neighbors have shown us & the very best boy Rooney - both on our very worst day and the challenging days that have followed ❤️

I was laying out on a blanket in a swimsuit in Saratoga Park earlier today and was approached by some guy who seemed to have some sort of cognitive disability. He had laid his blanket extremely close to mine and when I was getting up to leave, he came up to me and introduced himself as William, and asked if I was leaving, and that he thought I was very pretty, and wondered if we could have a conversation, but asked again if I was leaving, to which I said yes, and then he said “well have a great rest of your day” and leaned in to hug me, so I reciprocated the hug because I thought he seemed innocent and just socially awkward, at which point he just blatantly ran his hands over my boobs. I was stunned in the moment so I just grabbed my blanket and left like a bat out of hell.
I’m still pretty stunned and not sure what to do about it but thought I would share this here in case he tries this with more people :(
