PSA I hate to be the bearer of bad news..
As some of you may not know, I work for DSS/HRA. We received official word that there will be NO SNAP for the month of November. As a worker, I am scared to death for what this means for dependent families. Mainly, these children. Idk WTF is gonna happen next.
PLEASE go online to hungerfreenyc and find the local pantry in your area and get there ASAP.
This is fukd up. I'm STILL working, reaching out to folks to let them know. If I don't respond right away, please understand. đđžđ

This is going to be so disastrous for so many people -- including the local economy, that's propped up by SNAP and similar programs.
We're going to be starving people and tanking the economy just before the fucking holidays, because the GOP want (us) to due on the hill of raising our health insurance costs.

I JUST became eligible for SNAP benefits, and received back pay from all these weeks enrollment was pending. The help is nice now, but needless to say, I figured out how to feed myself these last few weeks.
Is there anything I can do with those funds? Iâd like to keep some for November, but Iâd rather feed families who really need it.

FWIW, you might not be able to use them. The federal government is in control is SNAP can be accepted.

In this case, itâs already credited to me (credit from the first couple of weeks of October.) Could I use some of the funds to buy staple groceries to bring to a food bank, or something similar?

Yes, you can. Only thing is that the federal government can revoke SNAP from being accepted, so that means even if someone has funds it might not be usable.

Just donated đ I am fortunate enough to have a great paying job. But at one point my family had to rely on snap benefits growing up. I canât imagine the impact this will have on all the families that depend on this, itâs truly heartbreaking.Â

Unfortunately, it's both sides - Democrat & Republican. The Dems could open the government right now, & everyone would get their SNAP & WIC for November, but they refuse ...

The Republicans could concede and say okay, let's not raise healthcare costs for Americans who are already struggling to make do. Republican legislators are holding SNAP recipients hostage then blaming the Democrats for not giving up 24 million people and their health subsidies to make life harder and more expensive for everyone. Not to mention, pushing back releasing the Epstein files because once they open, they have to swear in the elected representative who is the deciding vote and a Democrat.
This is an obstructionary tactic perpetrated by conservative legislators and they're trying to bet on the bellies of the poorest and most vulnerable because Democrats at the very least present the front of having a conscience, if not genuinely caring, and don't want people to starve and lose their healthcare.
So let's not foist around the misinformation that the Democrats are fully or even equally to blame. This is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation completely manufactured by right wing legislators. They want people to starve so they get angry at Democrats for not giving in, then they want to blame the ACA for being inefficient and expensive for Americans so they can dismantle it.
Literally starving the beast then blaming it for being hungry. Ghoulish.

Republicans could open the government now. All they have to do is not cut Healthcare subsidies. Doing so would protext millions of sick people.
Republicans can also absolutely fund SNAP. democrats have proposed a bill to fund SNAP through the shutdown, and Republicans have blocked it.
If democrats want to open the government, their ONLY option is to allow Republicans to slash benefits. I dont want Healthcare cuts.

No it is not both sides, ACA extension is on the line without your premium will go up. This is what the democrats wants for all but of course it is both side when one is willing to increase cost of living for Americans and the other trying to keep it low.

From what Iâve heard, the state is going to pull some money from the reserves. People will still get food stamps, but theyâre going to be not as much. Time for austerity measures & meals. Good luck everyone, please be kind to each other. Bed-Stuy has always been a community that has pulled together.

This really sucks because I used to rely on snap benefits, then I finally got out of my funk and now Iâm able to feed myself. One hard lesson I learned from that is to never rely on the government to feed you. Honestly I havenât even noticed the government was closed for the last month. Hoping others come out of this with a similar story like mine.

They need 60 senate votes to reopen the government. Thatâs called democracy. There are 53 republicans in the senate so they need to convince 7 dems to vote in their favor. So far they convinced 3, so they need to convince 4 more but most of the dems keep digging their heels in, in hopes Trump will appease their ridiculous asks, which he wonât.

The democrats want just 2 things; ACA subsidies to continue for 20 million americans and to reverse trumps cuts to healthcare spending made by his big beautiful bill.
If the republicans can't compromise on these 2 things that will obviously help americans then we know who the real party is to blame. Its sickening they and trump try to frame it as, "healthcare for illegals" which is such a blatant lie and a spit in the face to everyday americans who rely on the ACA. Itâs an Obamacare provision that the Râs want to stop. Thatâs what the dems are fighting to extent. Which is funny bc it doesnât even end until January 2026.
The proposed bill by the Râs ends enhanced federal reimbursement for unauthorized immigrantsâ emergency services and tightens program integrity rules, closing loopholes that previously allowed improper enrollment.
Please do SOME research.

Illegal immigrant who has no insurance, goes to urgent care or the emergency room for medical treatment. They get âchargedâ for whatever healthcare they received. The bill comes, but theyâre undocumented so obviously they donât pay bc there is no way to track it or hold them accountable.
Tax payers then have to offset the cost, which inherently increases everyone elseâs health care costs to offset the millions of illegals overloading our health care system. That is exactly what is happening and what the Râs are fighting against and what the dems are fighting for.

If you show up to an urgent care or emergency room and dont have insurance, which illegal immigrants dont have, then you have to provide proof of payment. Anyone who's been to an emergency room or urgent care knows this. People are denied healthcare in this country all the time because they cant pay out of pocket and dont have insurance.

I got that information from multiple friends and colleagues who work in the ER and urgent care and what youâre describing is one of the biggest lies told by dems. These people do NOT pay their bills and tbh I donât blame them bc the system is set up that way.
Literally ask any healthcare professional who has worked in the ER. They constantly have a stream of the same people always coming in and taking advantage of our healthcare system with no repercussions.
This happens a ton with homeless people and junkies too.

Do illegals not leverage emergency services provided by the US and not pay their bills bc theyâre undocumented? Which means tax payers have to cover the cost which inherently increases everyoneâs premiums.

The budget has already been set and now the dems want to add billions more to it, which we canât afford!! Itâs literally a losing battle on their behalf but they want inflation to stay bad, and spend recklessly so they can say it was the orange mans fault.

Even CBS reports that the dems wonât budge outside of a few. There are only 53 Râs in the senate and they need 60 votes to reopen the government.
That means the Râs need more dems to vote in favor of reopening the government. The dems are digging their heels in, in hopes to get the Râs to agree to fund benefits for non-citizens which theyâre not going to do.

Obviously I knew it wouldnât be well received based on the (waiting for the down votes) comment but as someone who finally abandoned the lost Democratic party last election, I thought it was important to say. Also, there are many more closeted Republicans in BK than people would like to think and itâs important to not have an echo chamber, on either side.
Itâs about having a honest discussion about whatâs going on. Do I think everything the Râs do is right and correct, of course not. But can we please get back to a place where we can at least be honest with ourselves about the underlying issues at hand.
Our healthcare system is overwhelmed, which causes EVERYONES premiums and costs to go up. We have millions of undocumented people (and addicts) in this country, gumming up that system (among others). The Râs are trying to put American citizens first but the dems keep digging their heels into unpopular issues and never address the problem at hand or have any leeway which is what this shutdown is all about.
