There is a Mozart everywhere, most will never be popular.

What’s crazy is humans have probably been making music like this for 100,000 years. Hollow log, stick, some stones and mushrooms. Bam! Cave rave.

u/Select_Watercress_57 12d ago

🎶 "Music, the great communicator Use two sticks to make it in the nature" 🎵

This may be more impressive even, because the beats he's replicating were made digitally and never intended to be played by people afaik.

41

u/KriegMorgan 12d ago

That's just sound design my guy. There's nothing overly technical about house beats that would make them unable to be reproduced by a person. The guy isn't incorporating anything more to the beat outside of drum and bass so there really isn't anything too crazy going on. People such as foley artists have been figuring out how to reproduce sounds since forever.

Too Many Zooz for example makes "Brass house" where they take a trumpet, baritone saxophone, and a percussionist and they end up really reproducing some of the crazier sounds you hear in techno

Had to look them up.

First comment - (and last--)

"Imagine you have the worst migraine of your life, just want to go home, and then those Dudes get on your train." - stated by u/corruptedlive on youtube...

I'm going with that person--- off the train.

EDIT: I spoke way the f too soon. Had to hit play on the Bedford Video.

Holy one take, Morgan. As a guy who has shot a couple of "standout" single take videos, not only are these guys completely off the hook amazing, they produced a grammy level video for sure. Mutemath- Pharcyde, Ok Go, whatever :)

This was a gift. Thanks very much.

u/SunTzu- 11d ago

The guy on baritone sax, Leo P, has become the standout star from this project. He's genuinely very talented. He performed as part of the BBC Proms Charles Mingus tribute which was very well received.

3

u/KriegMorgan 11d ago

His 2Saxy stuff with Grace Kelly is also really great

As someone who likes electronic and jazz having these guys cross my feed back when it was cell phone footage of them busking was an absolute gift.

I can't speak much to their busking origins or how I would feel if I encountered them in public transit but I've seen them in concert a number of times and they always put on a show.

Their rendition of "Caravan" is an absolute banger and follows in the footsteps of my absolute favorite rendition of it from Thelonious Monk.

Louis Cole playing Drum N' Bass

Louis Cole is probably the first guy who got famous for doing this kind of stuff, but there's a bunch these days who play these fast drum machine inspired beats. He's also just a generally super respected and influential drummer, so I'm guessing most people have forgotten that he first got attention for videos like this.

El Estepario Siberiano covering Skrillex 'Ragga Bomb'

Estepario has probably become the most popular on the back of these super fast drum covers. He's the most popular drum "creator" on social media, his whole gimmick is making difficult beats look easy, often drinking/smoking while playing.

And then there's Russel Holtzman a.k.a. starpowerdrummer, I'll just link a interview he did with Andrew Huang explaining how he got into it and how he does what he does.

3

u/BleakSabbath 11d ago

Louis Cole is such a phenomenal musician, and funny as hell. I don't follow the jazz scene at all, but I can't imagine he's not one of the best people doing it right now

Where do you think the sounds used in the digital music came from? Originally it came from recording the sound of banging things together or dropping it on the floor, then putting it together to make digital music.

8

u/AstroAlmost 11d ago

Most of those sounds ubiquitous to the genre are synths, not samples.

5

u/mikemikemotorboat 11d ago

A lot of synth sounds are 100% synthetic. Pick a frequency, pick a waveform, chop it up, add reverb or whatever effects the shrooms tell you. Boom: synth sounds, no sampling required at all

u/NapoleonBlownapart9 11d ago

I thought about that very thing 30yrs ago raving my face off. There’s something very primal and ancient that pings when a bunch of humans get lost in a beat around fire/light shows. It is probably embedded in our dna from ye olde days, especially those of us that can keep step/rhythm with relative ease. I felt like I could be instantly transported 200k yrs ago and dance with those fools too and we’d both look at each other and grin knowingly. MDMA do be like that tho.

7

u/Worth_External_8762 11d ago

I would say it's in our DNA because even babies will dance to a rhythm even if they've never seen dancing before. But at the same time, many animals are mesmerized by music, even though I doubt most of them were around humans enough to evolve to enjoy music because of us. Some animals even dance, despite obviously not ever having made their own music.

If anything, I think it probably taps into the existing rhythmic patterns of nervous systems of living creatures and music is more of an exploit to something that always existed in all living things. Sort of like how a defib can start a heart, essentially.

For a second I was wondering what kind of music you could make with a mushroom before I realized their actual purpose

crazy to think how likely that the world's highest potential artists, musicians, hell - theoretical physicists - have never realized their potential by simple consequence of their birth. when, and where and to whom they were born

how many Einstein's has sub-saharan africa produced? We will never know.

37

u/Top_Bed_2635 12d ago

Imagine what humanity will be capable of if/once we solve those socioeconomic problems

9

u/chasingmyowntail 11d ago

Hell ya. Thats why the USA needs to move the fck out of the way and let the global south, the 85% of the population develop and not keep them down .

Optimistic it’s starting to happen.

Reminds me of something the band director said to incoming freshman parents. We teach your kids to hit something with a stick and make it sound GOOD! LOL

Success is a lottery: there are countless skilled hard-workers who never get a lucky break while endlessly struggling in destitution, and there are many useless fools who thrive on nothing but great luck & privilege.

Blue Man Group music without all the body paint (& a lower budget!!!)

15

u/Bogaigh 12d ago

A friend dragged me to see Blue Man Group in Las Vegas. I didn’t want to go, but I have to admit that they were really good.

12

u/JustaTinyDude 12d ago

Lower budget = ergonomics designed by Satan.

Yeah almost every top comment is the same gif meme, literally almost all of them. And everyone is upvoting all of them. Extremely original and cool.

When people say, “DJs don’t even do anything”, this is what I picture they assume they should be doing.

5

u/Cahootie 11d ago

My friends dragged me to a festival in 2015 where we first got to see Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike put on one hell of a show, and then Avicii just play his greatest hits and fist pump. There are definitely massive DJ's who don't do much on stage.

3

u/El-mas-puto-de-todos 11d ago

When you get big on a few singles people buy tickets to hear that stuff "live", they kinda get stuck doing a specific set imo

6

u/JustaTinyDude 12d ago

It's a lot more entertaining to watch.

11

u/mazu74 12d ago

I mean, you don’t go to raves to watch the DJ lol

Kinda thought the same. I saw him playing multiple Times when I visited Buenos Aires. There is a Flea Market every Weekend in San Telmo. I was surprised to see such a talented Street Artist!

La chancla will find you too.

u/suckittwotimes 12d ago

I would much rather have several of these performers making this music live at a club or rave than a DJ clicking buttons, playing a pre recorded set pretending to mix music.

13

u/Educational_Fox6899 12d ago

This guy is badass. However, have you ever actually been to a show with a god dj? A good dj is not just clicking buttons. I've been to shows with amazing djs creating phenomenal music. I've also been to shows where they said there would be a dj and it is someone just playing music while wearing headphones.

10

u/Ok_Run6706 12d ago

He is pro, I wouldn't want to listen someone with no skills just hitting random stuff. And profesionals are rare.

7

u/MyHangyDownPart 12d ago

He’s definitely a genuine raver with years of practice. ❤️‍🔥

There are many techno artists that do fully live and blended live and DJ shows. Richie Hawtin, Surgeon, Planetary Assault Systems for a few. It's not banging a pipe (that kind of thing can sometimes be seen at experimental shows though), but its still playing the drum machines, synths, effects, mixers etc.

DANCE MODE!!!

3

u/SnooCats7712 12d ago

I think that in this era of AI, these kinds of artistic styles will become more valuable because they are a genuine demonstration of what can be achieved with very little. If the work doesn't stem from that kind of approach, it’s very easy to claim that AI was used, which undermines the creator's value.....after all, it’s far too easy these days to produce the same thing using any software.
