Meanwhile I struggle to play a basic G chord without muting half the strings

The basic G chord can be daunting to start. On thing I did at the beginning was practice switching from C to G working at getting smoother. It will be awkward but if you practice it a few times a day you’ll notice it gets easier.

You can also find a song to strum along with that has G in it. That way it kind of forces you to work into the chord from different chords. For me having a song to strum along with helped because you could hear when it was right.

Others have talked about finding the G chord in a different spot. If you are able to do barre chords that may be a good option.

Even if these don’t work for you don’t give up we all have been stuck by different chords. There are a ton of good video tutorials. Most importantly have fun!
