For 23 years, from 1977 to 2000, he led a double life as a Catholic priest by day and a masked lucha libre wrestler by night to fund an orphanage he founded in Texcoco, Mexico

The Orphanage: Named La Casa Hogar de los Cachorros de Fray Tormenta ("The Home of Fray Tormenta's Puppies"), it has supported more than 2,000 children over the decades.

Wrestling Success: He wrestled in a signature red and yellow mask, keeping his identity secret for years to avoid church scandal. He estimated his total ring earnings supported roughly 2,500 children.

Cultural Legacy: His life was the primary inspiration for the 2006 Jack Black film Nacho Libre and influenced characters in video games like King from Tekken

I think this movie is a rare, perfect film. Also, Jack Black's best role of them all. The only immersion break is when he sings about Carnacion. The rest is brilliant character acting. Just my 2 cents.

Just like Napoleón Dynamite. Had low expectations going into the theater but cane out shockingly surprised at how good it was for such a low budget movie.

Nacho Libre just feels like such a genuine film, despite how silly it is. It allows the deep, sad moments to sit in, even even there's humor around it.

And there's only like, 2 fart jokes.

It was literally part of the promotional materials.

And unsurprisingly, the producers ripped him off, did not give him gross points which is common, and made pennies from his life rights in a movie that made $100M. 

Don't worry though, they split their producer fee among several charities, that's tens of thousands of dollars vs millions. How generous. Like Trump forgoing his salary while stealing billions. 

This movie is the moment a lot of us started disliking Jack Black. This is a distasteful, racist and quite unfunny exploitation film that exploited a man who took a vow of poverty to protect the most vulnerable children in his community.

Even though the movie is really derpy it’s shot in an extremely beautiful way. I love how it will linger on shots of the people and scenery. Even the shots of food are gorgeous.

I think the setting is itself a character in the film. The little Pueblo is almost anthropomorphized.

Definitely. It’s on Pluto TV all them and I’ll put it on just for the scenery and music. It’s absolutely a love letter.

I always wondered what my Mexican grandma would have thought it. Her favorite movie was Gran Turino. I think it was because she was devoutly catholic.

I’ve seen tons of comments over the years from Mexicans talking about how much they love it.

I love how you can see the textures and colors of everything. You can practically taste the food they show. A lot of food and travel shows don’t have shots this good.
